Do I need a manager?
So... i got thinking to maybe getting a manager. I'm a solo artist, managed to build but a *fairly* good following in Durham, but now I've moved to York, where I potentially more opportunities for gigs and such, but of course have no following here. I enjoy playing gigs and getting involved in music scenes and such, and meeting people along the way.
Problem is, I don't have a great deal of 'ambition' - in that I'm not aiming to get a number one single, or be world renowned for what I do, or be the hot new band one everyone's lips. My only ambition is to write and play the best music I can, do some gigs, maybe record some albums/EPs. In addition, I have a job which requires me to work long hours occasionally, so I might not be able to do as many gigs as physically possible.
What I'm basically saying is I don't know what a manager can and can't do for me. Some people would say that a manager is an absolute necessity if you're serious about music. Others would say that it's all about getting to meet people at gigs, that's more important.
SO. Please, bands and artists, comment on your experiences of managers, whether you're starting out or well established, and any advice or comments would be most appreciated!
Cheers, sorry for the long waffle.
