new Biffy single

All good?
Or not, because it isn't quite a 'derivative' as the old stuff?

  • What?!

The old stuff isn't derivative...if anything, the new stuff (i.e Puzzle) certainly is.

  • I heard a clip on their myspaz

    I don't like it.

  • It's dogshit

I assumed they were rushing to release an EP or single to appease their old fans with something a bit different.

It sounds like puzzle with more studio dickery attached - with the bummer caveat that now they're gonna be all 'upbeat'...oh MOUNTAINS, Simon, how the silly-useless-shit did you think of that.

    Band over. Next.

  • It's quite good

they've always done big poppy choruses but this one just doesn't grab me the way something like Questions & Answers or 57 did.

  • I love it

    • ^this

      it sounds MASSIVE

      • stewart is right

They've gotten bigger, now the kool kids don't like em. Coincidence? It happens with every other band who get big. I ain't surprised.

Puzzle isn't that different from their other stuff. Glitter and Trauma, Questions and Answers, 57 all had huge choruses like Living is a Problem and Saturday Superhouse. Yeah it's slightly more polished, but they're still the same band.

Their "edginess" got fucking annoying after 14 songs anyway, they disappeared up their own bums a bit really. TVOB is shit, the first album is ace, as is Puzzle.

        • Did you just call TVOB shit.

I may have to kill you, I'm sorry I have no choice.

        • oh dear

'They've gotten bigger, now the kool kids don't like em. Coincidence?'

i think people have more sense than that. the reason why people have gone off them is becuase of hoe their sound has evolved, not becuase they are now bigger. and of course they are the same band, but you cant liken puzzle to the debut, no no no.

          • i'd say Blackened Sky

is much more like what I've heard from Puzzle than either of the other albums. It's full of big foosy grunge-pop choruses and singalongs, whereas the other two have more yelling screaming and acting 'weird'.

  • Haven't heard it, still haven't even got round to buying Puzzle yet.

I'm scared that I'm going to be majorly disappointed, I guess I should just MTFU and buy it.

  • I like it

Always going to be a backlash to their success, but no bands deserves it more, they've consistently been brilliant.

They've always had hooks mixed in with the rock, it's why I love them so much I think, they're just more noticeable on Puzzle. It's still an album that has tracks like Living Is A Problem, Get Fucked Stud etc, so it's not exactly a horrible sell out, just an evolution.

They've been getting poppier with each album really. Oh, and I agree about TVOB being untouched, it's a near perfect record.

    • yeah TVOB is great isnt it

      i like it alot

    • When I bought TVOB..

..I really didn't think I could possibly like it more than Infinity Land, I was wrong.

      • darkanddivine

how can you called vertigo shit? Pretty much the best album outta the 4...

        • ^This, it's a truly amazing album.

Although you realsied that you replied on the wrong place right?

            • biffy would be no one if it wasn't for us

              (the cool kids)

'The Vertigo of Bliss' is by far biffy clyro's best album because it is the band at their creative AND melodic best. It was on this album where they perfected their sound and pushed themselves the furthest they ever have (and by the sounds of it probably ever will)

Blackened Sky is fine but it is more or less just a Sunny Day Real Estate tribute, which is better than being a tribute to a lot of other things, but that was a band still trying to find its feet.

Infinity Land is a band clumsily trying to work out where to go next with reletive success. It had some fantastic sing-alongs and epic parts but nothing that could rival TVOB because every song on that album is perfectly weighted and emotionally sought.

and in all honesty, I didn't mind Puzzle when it first came out; in fact, when the three singles leading up to it came out, I was excited; 'Semi-Metal', 'Saturday Superhouse' and 'Living is a Problem' are all fantastic and edgy pop songs. It's just that that album had no real staying power. Outside of those 3 singles there were only a couple of other good songs; 'a whole child ago', 'now i'm everyone', 'get fucked stud'. Otherwise, the album was over-produced and lacked substance, seeing as the other half of songs were either boring or plain aggrivating 'Who's got a match?' anyone? And as if it weren't a final insult, they then decided to release those terrible songs as singles and officially put the final dagger into their legacy when 'Folding Stars', 'Machines' and 'Who's got a match?' were being sung by every half brained radio 1 listening idiot in the country.

no, I have no problem with their success, in fact, i'm happy for them, given the joy they've given me over the years they desevre everything they get, just don't expect me to sympathise when their 5th album turns out to be a commercial flop now they have committed to throwing themselves into the torretial shark pond that is the british mainstream music media.

              • ^^

                well said

                • They won't mind being a commercial flop

they seem to be in it for the music, and they have a hardcore fanbase, so they'll always sell pretty well.

Agree that 'Folding Stars' is crap though; nice sentiment, shit song.

                  • this is it though

if post-puzzle biffy is a flop then they will find their original hardcore has been SEVERELY weakened and the idiots will be gone too.

they would have to go back to doing something really special and have a huge reality check if they're going to get them back again.

This isn't impossible, there are bands who have managed it, but they have to really mean it and write some really good songs (which judging by this, isn't happening) to have even a hope of people picking them up again.

              • ^ nail hit on head

Sick fed up of "that oh you don't like them because they're popular now" bullshit line.

It's boring. They're boring. Get over it.

  • Used to love Biffy before Puzzle but...

they seem to have lapsed into a bit of a formula, namely:

"write a big fuck-off Major label/Jo Wiley/Tesco Shopper-pleasing rock ballad with a suitably "epic"/"hooky" chorus, then sporadically drop a beat in an unusual place to make it sound like the old stuff...kinda".

All power to them as it seems to be paying off, but I sure won't be buying the single when it comes out.

    • LOL

    • I've only heard Semi-Mental and I still know this post is bollocks.

"Tesco Shopper-pleasing rock" (WTF, does this even meen, EVERYONE has to buy their groceries somewhere)

If you meen people that can buy most of their CDs from Tescos, then you're just plain wrong.

      • With the greatest respect...

and not meaning to be cheeky, but you are openly admitting to having heard only one track on the album (Puzzle), and it is one of the better ones, so you will forgive me if I stand by my assertions.

I have listened to the whole thing many times and tried my hardest to love it out of loyalty to a band that I have loved since their first album (and still cite as a major influence), but unfortunately, this new single to me is a nail in a coffin and not the return to form I had hoped.

Yes, I am painting in broad, generalising brush strokes in the above comment (largely for the sake of brevity and childish humour), but I just cannot appreciate their latest musical offerings and have witnessed firsthand the vast shift in their appeal to an entirely new demographic.

I seriously don't begrudge them their success as they gave me years of joy at their music and to wish them anything other than the best would be ridiculously petty.

Just saying, on the basis of their newest stuff, I'm done.

        • as much as id like to make jokes and ridicule you

but that was a perfect argument.the other point you made was ridiculous though!

          • ^Exactly

I didn't need to hear the rest of Puzzle to understand the ridiculous nature of pizz101's first post, although the 2nd one displays a more sensible set of well made points.

            • In fairness...

you do kinda need to know what someone is talking about if you intend to debate or criticise them. Kinda helps.

Glad the rest of what I said meets with your approval though. :P

          • Ridicule away...

but I can honestly hear Biffy's stuff getting more formulaic and regardless of the way I made it, I still don't think my initial point is that ridiculous underneath it all.

If I seemed flippant or reactionary or a bit of a dick in any way, it is my own (not very good) way of dealing with a band who, having broadened my musical horizons to a staggering degree, who I felt like I "grew" with, who I told every single one of my mates about (who then in turn had their own horizon broadening experience and then came to every gig with me), have now seemed to turn and do a bit of a musical 180 degrees.

I know I am not the only one spotting the shift in their music so again, don't think my first point is entirely without validity.

  • brilliant

    best song they've ever written

  • This single wont be on album number 5 by the way..

This is hopefully a good thing ie this is them finishing off their poppier singles with one last single.

So should be another turn in their style for album number 5. Just as their has been a turn on every albums style.

B-sides will be worth the buy though...

  • Didn't infinity land gain them alot of ground?

Each album has gained them more recognition (i think infinity land made it into the top 20). I suppose it would be true to say that after years of being a popular underground band, it seems logical that they dabble in the mainstream.

Also, they are a hell of alot more interesting to see live than any mainstream indie shite drivel like Razorlight or The Killers (nothing personal, they're just very dull).

Basically what i'm saying in a long winded way is that BC have not sold out and are still a wicked live band.

    • of course

but its possible to be interesting AND popular

take foals,(or more obviously, RADIOHEAD) alright, they can be critised for being a bit too samey at times but the fact that they've managed to get away with making a very distilled version of Battles popular is an admirable task by any stretch of the imagination.

Pop music is awesome but it still needs to be passionate if i'm ever gonna give a shit (like what biffy managed on earlier albums)

      • Point Taken

The thing about Puzzle for me personally is that the songs sound alot better live than on record, a particular example of this is Who's Got a Match, which is a pretty eclectic pop song.

Biffy really are a very passionate live band and have a huge sound (especially given that there's only 3 of them).

      • or a band slightly more relevent to what Biffy are doing...

Soundgarden. They went mainstream on Superunknown yet, with DOTU, managed to a commercially pleasing yet artistically sound follow-up.

You don't neccesarily have to dumb down to appeal to a mass audience.
