Tuesday, Us, The Low Edges, The Sways and Monster Bobby
I keep forgetting to talk up gigs I'm promoting on here. But this should be great probably:
It's at the Good Ship in Kilburn by the way.

Blurby thing:
10:20 – 10:50 Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences
www.myspace.com/theeawkwardsilences
“Much more attention-grabbing than anything else I’ve listened to recently. It seems to be customary to compare Hawkins to Nick Cave and Tom Waits. This does him a huge disservice: he's a considerably more marginal and interesting figure than these two decidedly mainstream oddballs.” – Drunken Werewolf Magazine
“A genuinely dirty, raw rock energy that I've been missing for a good few years. I mean can you name a new band that's made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end and make you believe that twenty five thousand ants are crawling all over your skin?” – Room 13
“Hawkins is breathing life into a tired genre and then spitting into its resurrected face” – The Student Radio Associaton
“If indie music is plagued with soulless rats then Paul Hawkins is the new pied piper. Except this guy doesn’t escort the vermin away but eat them up and spit them out. Acerbic aceness.” – Moderate Rock
9:40 – 10:10 – The Low Edges
www.myspace.com/thelowedges
The Low Edges hold Silent Night’s new record for ‘Shortest Period of Time between First Hearing a Note of Their Music and Offering Them a Gig” (Paul thinks he decided he wanted them on within about 30 seconds). They think they sound a bit like the Auteurs, Johnnny Cash and Scott Walker. This is true but in places they also sound like Mark E Smith fronting a Psychedelic Country-Influenced Glam Rock band. Which is obviously a very good thing indeed…
“The bastard love children of Shane McGowan and Nick Cave” – Lobster Quadrille Magazine
“Fire and Brimstone Country Preaching” – Maps Magazine
“Combining ruthless, almost rockabilly-esque guitar picking with dark hearted vocals and some strident bass and drum work they make taut, streamlined songs”
PowPowPow.com
9 – 9:30 – The Sways
www.myspace.com/thesways
Paul absolutely loves The Sways and with very good reason. Eccentric and poppy country-influenced sea shanties that sound like they’re being played at least 5 times too fast and sound all the better for it. One of the most entertaining bands that you could ever wish to see.
“Unlike anything I’ve ever heard before” – Subba-Cultcha
“Bug-eyed freak outbursts that aren’t entirely unlike the Bad Seeds on a treadmill” – Drowned in Sound
“The Sways have broken out of the same pastoral stable that houses the likes of British Sea Power and The Coral to head for the Wild West...”
Londonist.com
8:20 – 8:50 – Monster Bobby
www.myspace.com/monsterbobby
Perhaps best known as the ‘creator’ of the Pipettes (who he also plays guitar for), Monster Bobby is also a promoter, DJ and, most importantly to us, a singer-songwriter who takes takes influence equally from Wreckless Eric & other outsider post-punks, 60s pop and electronica. In his words it sounds “like a male ape copulating with a female cyborg”. If this is so, it sounds like the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
8 – 8:15 – Niall Spooner-Harvey
www.myspace.com/niallspoonerharvey
Silent Night’s resident poet does another 15 minutes of ranting and spleen-inventing invective. Compulsive viewing.
