Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Apart from The Mercy Seat, and to a lesser extent Where the Wild Roses Grow, I just dont "get it". They seem bland and almost a bit MoR.

Plus, are they, like, christians or something?

up until the new album, not christian at all. but the new one seems to have a lot more god references, though a lot of them seem quite sarcastic so who knows.

  On the new one I thought all the references to God seemed kind of mocking really such as:

    but he is obsessed with biblical imagery (and why shouldn't he be, seeing as it's some of the finest ever written).
    
    And if you think he's MOR, download 'Tupelo', 'Stagger Lee', 'The Kindness of Strangers', 'From Her To Eternity', 'Babe I'm On Fire' or, well, anything except songs from The Boatman's Call (which is a fine, fine album, but is certainly quite refined. Though NOT MOR!).

      That's not really proof that he isn't a christian. I certainly don't know any christians who believe in an interventionalist god. Otherwise there would be all sorts of crazy crap happening, like bread turning into wine, fish turning into anvils etc.

        Stagger Lee is an old soul standard isn't it? I have it on my comp sung definitely not by NC. I don't find him bland but I don't think I get it.

        It is indeed, but Cave oomphs it up and gratuitously uses the word "motherfucker". It's deliciously camp and most certainly not MOR.
        
        And Cave is NOT a Christian, regardless of that line. Read an interview with him!

  didnt he have some drastic changesx in his poersonal life? I belive he got married had a kid or something....these things i guess changed his insight into his life. bigger priorities than his own misery. thought it clealry didnt stop cobain et al.

Nick Cave is a born again Christian. Probably to do with programme he went through to come off heroin. His music is getting gradually less interesting. To hear him at his best, try "Let Love In". It's fucking amazing.

  John, John, have you heard 'Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus'? I've been a huge huge fan of his since 1987 and would say that this latest album is without doubt his finest work to date.
  
  Play the track 'Breathless' and sick back and close your eyes and give in to its true dark beauty! Or the grandiose splendor of 'Let The Bells Ring'.

        my fave album is No More Shall We Part, 15ft of Pure White Snow, Hallelujah, As I sat Sadly By Her Side, and the title track all mindblowingly good, the production on it is amazing

        All of those songs are worth listening to, and they touch pretty much all of the bases of his career with The Bad Seeds. Tupelo is an oft overlooked gem, it tells the story of the birth of Elvis in a truly apocalypctic style. The Ship Song's a beaut too: one of the most gorgeous songs ever written.

        I already had quite a lot of his stuff, solo/Bad Seeds/Birthday Party, but about 18 months ago I borrowed a large pile off a friend to copy onto cd. About halfway through I realised that it doesn't have the staying power to keep me that interested. I think he's one of those artists you either get to the point of obsession or can take or leave.

        Tupelo is fucking brilliant, probably my favourite song of his, the violence of the music combined with darkness of the lyrics is ace. Yeah some of the latter albums (Nocturama anyone?) may not be as good , but i don't think he's ever released a genuinley bad record.

        i agree, cave's work just gets better and better. the lyre of orpheus/abbatoir blues album is breathtaking.
        
        there's so many of his songs that i just fucking adore. 'are you the one that i've been waiting for' brings a tear to my eye every time i hear it.
        
        i don't know whether he's a christian, and in truth i don't fucking care. his music just fucking moves me.
