I used to like AWFUL music, naming no names, but then I started to meet interesting people who played me great things, and I've developed my own taste from there.

and so I listened to some really bad shit when I was much younger. I was pretty much saved by The Housemartins and The Smiths (although that statement could be mocked by many), however before then I did have a thing for Debbie Gibson. However, 40% was music related, 60% was down to the blonde poodle perm.
First records I bought were by Fine Young Cannibals, and Black. Which aren't actually *that* bad looking back. First 7" single by "Hey Matthew" by Karel Fialka. I am such an obscurist.

which was a beastie boys album on cassette. After that my tastes some what went down hill with stuff like cradle of filth. Im not really that embarressed by it though because that got me into other metal that I still listen to.

Fanatical about Iron Maiden from the age of 8-12, whilst being simultaneously introduced to AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Cream, The Beatles, Rush, Pink Floyd, Sex Pistols etc by my dad. Subscribed to Kerrang! age 12 and got into all the grunge stuff (nirvana, pearl jam, soundgarden) and absolutely worshipped The Wildhearts. Age 14/15, got into brit-pop/indie (Oasis, blur, pulp) and from then opened my mind to all things new and interesting whilst continuing to research the classics...

I remember seeing Skunk Anansie headline the Mayday Festival on Clapham common back in 1995, I must have been 15. It was just after 'Selling Jesus' had come out and the single was getting lots of Evening Session play.

I read a great article about how they got utterly fucked over by their US record label, dumbfuck American record executives simply had no idea how to handle the concept of a rock band that had black people and white people in it.

I used to really like Symposium, 'A', Idlewild (still think they were great in their prime though), Fungus, all that shit. Think quite a few people were into that scene though.
Nu-metal - there was definitely a point when I thought 'Significant Other' by Limp Bizkit was kickass. Then all the rest - Sevendust, Coal Chamber, Slipknot, Taproot, etc. I still think Korn, Glassjaw and Incubus are alright if that's your thing but I honestly don't know what I was doing.
Not embarrassed, more confused; since I was happily listening to Sonic Youth, Pavement and Yo La Tengo whilst listening to this shit. I think when you're younger is's more difficult to discern. Also, it's harder when you don't have Pitchfork telling you what to listen to.

In my early teens I wasn't THAT into music
I think I liked Cypress Hill, Linkin Park, Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, Eminem, Dr Dre, The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth & Pavement and that was all I listened to really.... so I guess it was sort of half and half. I thought these were the only good bands in existence as I've never been one for Top Of The Pops and thought all unknown bands where unknown because they were shit.

I tried but didn't really get on with it however. Pop punk had the potential to be, but I look back on some of it with fondness. As a fresh-faced, uncynical, perky 15 year old, it spoke to me a lot more than moody nu-metal or any number of dull indie bands that plodded around the same time.

BUT some of those bands are embarrassing looking back. There's definitely a difference there. Like NOFX are in their 40s making that lazy, dumb music but as a 14yrold it was pretty fast and exciting.

It was fucking attrocious (INXS, Huey Lewis and the News, Def Leppard, Poison, Dire Straits, and a host of other mediocre soft and pop rock acts).
Late 80's, no internet to tell you about all the good stuff, only ToTP and the Network Chart Show, and a dad who had fallen to the dark powers of MOR didn't help any.
14 years old and nicking Kerrang out of Menzies fixed that though.
Like everybody, there were a few howlers I must admit..
But certainly my scope for new music is much wider.
In my teens I wouldn't go searching for music, so the there wasn't much variety, pretty much listened to mates brothers stuff, The Roses, Rolling Stones, Beatles etc. It was pretty much indie mixed with a lot of older stuff for a good few years.
Plus didn't have the internet then, so finding new/different stuff wasn't as easy.

I went from Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Faith No More/Smashing Pumpkins to PWEI/Ned's Atomic Dustbin/Mega City Four in my early teens. I'm still happy to listen to any of them though Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins are both bands that should have quit whilst they were still ahead.

Aged 7 to 12 I listened to what the cool older kids next door raved about
which was Iron Maiden, Metallica, GNR, Dio, Deep Purple, Megadeth, Anthrax etc.
Then in December 1991, aged 13, I realised a few things - I had enough paper-round money to buy music magazines, I could get a bus to Chester library without my Ma accompanying me and they would lend you cassettes (and a year later when me Dad got a CD player) for 20p a go. And they never asked you whether you planned on taping them on to a blank cassette! I felt so naughty thinking 'this is so obvious!'
I got the end of year best album lists from Select, Q, NME and Melody Maker and over the next couple of months got out of the library what blew my mind:
Primal Scream, Nirvana, U2, Teenage Fanclub, Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, Public Enemy, 808 State, Morrissey, Prince, The Fall, Neil Young, Massive Attack, The Orb, Mercury Rev, Blur etc.
Then I went back and started getting the classics but that set me off on the adventure I'm still on. I'll never hit the high of that year ever again but I'll keep searching.

I wasn't really into music until I was say 15 and even then it was only Interpol, Zeppelin and Editors or something. Might be a generational thing.
But no, I'm not ashamed of my younger music years. It wasn't half bad actually. For some (morbid) reason by brother bought me Tool's Lateralus for my 11th birthday or something. Parent's were just, "what is that!?". Funny. Otherwise just Limp Bizkit's Significant Other and Korn Issues - top stuff.
My parents are both massive music snobs
She's classical, he's jazz. So I inherited an early prejudice towards finicky technical craftsmanship as the be-all and end-all of musical excellence. This led me to the conviction in my early teens that you really didn't need to listen to anything other than Steely Dan. Occasionally I'd make side trips into poppier stuff like The Doobie Brothers, and had a fondness for (oh jesus) "jazz/rock fusion" and all that Al DiMeola/Weather Report/Chick Corea shite. But at the end of the day, it was all about The Dan.
All I can say these days is: thank fucking christ for punk.
