"...recorded Revolver and Sgt Pepper on 4 tracks," that'll clear everyone's head. - Jack White
I was watching a History of Rock 'n Roll dealie-bob and guitarist from Steely Dan was explaining how it took him 6 weeks in the studio to find a comfortable chair.
I presume he was using that as a metaphor to explain both the excesses of the 70s which brought out garbage like Dark Side of the Moon (yes, Shirley, it's shite!) and also how it was good in the sense record companies weren't breathing down bands' necks for that 'hit' single.
So you've all heard the MBV story how Loveless bankrupted the label. Spending an eternity in the studio doesn't necessarily mean it's strictly a 70s issue nor that the album will suffer. On the other hand, how many of us think Chinese Democracy is going to be a steaming pile of donkey doo?
Usually I'm after positive examples but I dropped my ice cream cone today and I'm feeling irritable... so if you'd like to give a "Loveless" example please note it so. Otherwise,
Albums Which Were Overworked and Overproduced and are basically Crap!
