Are Beastie Boys betraying Tibet by playing Live Earth? (Chris TT myspace bulletin)
sort of DOES have a point, i like how he mentions DiS:
" Been thinking about this a bit.
Obviously Live Earth is a fat waste of resources, ruinous for the environment, to promote awareness of an issue we know about already, thanks. 100 unnecessary private jet flights, for a start. Ecologically, the best thing would be: cancel the gigs on grounds of saving the planet. Ha, the news story would raise more awareness than the love-in...
But anyway, apart from that, what's the issue for the Beastie Boys? Well, their key cause has always been the occupation of Tibet by China, right? Yet now they're proudly doing a gig for an organisation that's working hand-in-hand with the Chinese government to produce a Live Earth concert in China, with Oasis playing (yup, more private jets) and presumably the usual vile, self-congratulatory coke-addled VIP areas for local officials and all that shite.
So, what the fuck? I know our media - especially our retarded cultural press - will just regurgitate press releases about how exciting it is that the Beasties are at Bestival and Brixton etc. but seriously, is someone who gets an interview going to even quietly ask about this? Someone at NME or Drowned In Sound or Observer Music Monthly got some balls, ready to step up?
Or am I over-reacting? Right now, the genocide in Darfur in Sudan, where more than treble the numbers of people have been murdered than in Iraq, is funded and armed by the Chinese government's support / control of the Sudanese government. Seriously, they could stop the massacres with a finger-snap but don't. Isn't taking a stand about that - and other Chinese government atrocities including Tibet - a bit more important than telling me to buy the right lightbulb?
