Neon Bible in 'a grower' shocker
Okay. So all you doom-mongers who were saying this album was shit, turns out you were wrong.
it's that old fashioned thing called 'a grower'. Whereas 'Funeral' was, for me, the best slap in the face instantly amazing record I'd heard in a long time. 'Neon Bible' is subtler, more lyrically rich. More complex. The general mid-tempo feel, which was disappointing at first now seems more to allow the songs to breathe a little. And if you care to look at is as some kind of 'state of the union' concept album then lyrically I think it's up there with OK Computer.
Sure the production sounds like they've covered everything in a layer of non-stick plastic, and it's more of an issue on this record that win butler can't sing for toffee. the string arrangements aren't quick as 'caught with yr hands in the syrup jar' satisfying as before.
But this record is actually great. It's not as good as Funeral but few records on this earth are.
If you didn't like it and you actually wanted to then my advice is to persevere.
