So, last night I saw Lily Allen...
…and it was, against my indie suspicions, pretty great.
YES, she’s only famous because her absent father is a somewhat detestable celebrity.
YES, due to said detestable celebrity genes, she’s not terribly attractive.
YES, it’s throwaway summery pop, and those fawning broadsheet critics who have claimed otherwise will regret it in a few months.
But it was FUN – she’s got a great stage presence, all her songs are good for tipsy dancing too, and her brass section in oversized baseball caps brought a party atmosphere to proceedings. ‘Smile’ is one of the weakest of her songs, and it was final song ‘Alfie’ which the audience had clearly been waiting for.
I had expected the audience to be made up of free-ticketed industry types, but in fact it was made up of 15 year old Lily clones, slightly suspect looking middle-aged men, Lily’s family (minus Keith), and my friends and I (less fashionable and older than most of the other females in the room, but the atmosphere was so decidedly uncool, it wasn’t intimidating.)
CELEBRITY-SPOTTING: My friends and I were rather excited by seeing Reggie from TOTP in an MC Hammer T-shirt. Then, I went to the bar, and spotted someone that I thought was DiSer Rrrachel. I was about to go over and say hi, then was glad I didn’t, as I realised that it was, in actual fact, Keira Knightley. I’ve never been impressed by her on-screen, but in real life she was BEAUTIFUL.
So yes, verdict, Lily Allen live = fun. Sorry.
