this is good stuff again Jack
Nice to see DiS proving its church is wide enough
to feature a well-written piece on classical music. I concur with the awkward silence between movements, when one's entire being screams "clap, damn you, clap!", instead of the coughing and shuffling. But it's a brave soul who breaks the unwritten code!
It's probably also worth mentioning there's a small but perfectly formed world music and jazz strand, with some excellent names, but none more notable than Staff Benda Bilili, the Congolese paraplegic street band made good, with Congolese rapper Baloji. Mouth-wateringly exciting.
Ivor Novello
National Youth Jazz Orchestra
John Cage
Broadway
Yup
All those look great as well. A lot of opera this year as well, for some reason - no idea if there are surtitles though, otherwise I would have included Prom 60 (Marriage of Figaro) as well. Tom Service is on Steve Lamacq's show on 6 Music all this week recommending contemporary stuff as well.
Thanks!
More to come soon...
Had my first promming experience last year
watching the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra. Took a deck chair along to chill in the sun while queuing and then the Mahler was ridiculously good.
Can't really beat it for value.
Thanks for picking out some for this year :)
You must have got there at about dawn
I turned up at what at a time I considered to be pretty early, and there were already somewhere in the region eleventy bajillion people there.
We there 12ish I think
a friend got to the queue ten minutes after us and didn't get in (after queuing hours poor guy!). Some of the hardcore oldies had been camping overnight to guarantee spots at the front.
Ah well
There's always the video:
