Lost 11 of 2011 - #1: Destroyer Kaputt
Admittedly this is clearly not quite as "lost" as the rest of this year's other Lost 11 picks (it's at #20 in our year-end, for starters!), it's an album which doesn't seem to have quite connected, for whatever reasons, with our staff. DiS set John Calvert the task of arguing its case, in which he goes as far as to say it's North America's answer to Let England Shake

Loads of people love this album
It's definitely not an outsider choice. And I don't think you need to drop references to stuff that's more 'popular' on here like the Weeknd and PJ Harvey to try and make it more relatable.
Bringing more attention to this album is always good
But I would agree that its hardly lost...possibly slightly underappreciated but it isn't in keeping with the profile of the other Lost 11.
Yeah good point
I do struggle to see how this wouldn't be in most people's top 10 at least. That Let England Shake analogy just irked me somewhat.
Lovely review
Excellent work from both the reviewer and dan bejar.
Kaputt best of 2011 rankings in British press
our Dead Oceans (Destroyer's label for UK/EU/Japan) list monkey noted the following year end poll results...
#20 Drowned in Sound
#22 The Stool Pigeon
#29 The Quietus
#31 Uncut
#33 The Guardian
#41 MOJO
#44 NME
Regardless of whether this is "lost" enough
it's a beautifully written article. It really nails the feel of the record.
This article is totally mental...
I almost thought its senseless dreamlike narrative was a satirical take on the album itself: by disguising itself as the Less Than Zero 1980s, Kaputt is comparing America today to Nazi German decadence and decline, just like Gatsby and Joseph Conrad did or PJ Harvey is doing now to England. 2011 is about pleasure anxiety before the apocalypse and A$AP Rocky, the Weeknd, Girl Talk and now Destroyer are its horsemen.
It was almost a year ago!
that I wrote the original review for this record. I must've listened to it a hundred times, seriously. In every circumstance: totally engaged to background music.
I love every note of this record!
I remember thinking I wrote a pretty good piece, but then that fucker from PF, a couple days later, came out with a better one. Bastard! You, John, have perhaps surpassed Mr Richardson here. :)
No. 2 at Pitchfork
Great record
But a glaring omission from your 75 and definitely not 'lost' in any way
#1 Luke Slater
A glaring omission you say?
At number 20, I say.
packshot clearly isn't big enough
perhaps I shoulda made it into an animated gif? http://drownedinsound.com/news/4144241-dis-favourite-albums-of-2011--20-6
Oh
I had just presumed that the lost records weren't in the main list. Disregard that then.
outstanding piece
Does what great writing about music should and makes you see the music in question in a whole new light. I already loved the record, thought I had it figured, but Calvert's highlighted another level of depth.
