Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Beat The Devil's Tattoo
Over the course of the nine years that have elapsed since debut record B.R.M.C. announced Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's intentions, its been pretty much a case of indifference that's greeted each subsequent release, gradually pushing them into their own cosy fan-encrusted niche without ever realising the potential or expectations set from the outset.

excellent excellent news. very much looking forward to hearing this
the first cuts from the album on their myspace sound very promising. I'm not sure I got the memo on Howl though. I think its their finest effort since the debut, non?
I never really got 'Howl'
to be honest. Maybe it was the shock of seeing them play it live before I heard the record? This is a corker though, totally unexpected but largely excellent.
in defence of Howl
they were talking about making a record like that before Take Them On... came out.
True
which I suppose means we should be applauding their integrity if nothing else.
Howl is a great record.
This sounds interesting - terrible album name though.
Howl
Yep, I think it's still their finest to date. Take Them On was the one that didn't really grab me, though still a coupla gems on there. Can't wait to get me hands on this though!!
Around the period of BRMC's debut
most people were thinking the Strokes had revitalized music from the dirge of KROQ/Limp Bizcuit crap...but for me it was BRMC (and Interpol and maybe that one Dandy Warhols album). Also, I quite like Howl too. Looking forward to this.
Saw BRMC's show last night (03-02-10)
I saw BRMC play last night at the Gothic Theater in Denver. They put on an amazing show! They must have great confidence in their new record (not even out yet in the US until next week) because the first three songs were new. They continued to sprinkled new songs throughout their set. I counted eight new songs, all of which sounded good, especially the one where Rob was detuning/retuning the fourth string on his bass (giving it a really cool sound). And the new drummer Leah Shapiro sounded top notch. It was really cool to see a woman in the band (speaking as a female fan)!
I saw them in Denver in May 2007. That was a good show, but this one was twice as good. They were clearly having a great time, talking a lot with the audience. They just seemed so loose, into it and, frankly, happy. There lots of smiles, which was great to see. There was little of those "good feelings" when I saw them three years ago.
I first became aware of them with Take Them On. I just loved that record! From there, I listened to their first one, which I now recognize as superior to its successor. I didn't like Howl at first, but now I love it (so many wonderful, passionate songs!). From what I heard last night, I'm looking forward to buying the new album!
I for one
can't wait to see them play this record live. 'Half State' slays, end of...
Howl
Howl is the only album of theirs that keeps finding it's way back into my hifi - one of the greatest albums showcasing Americana in the last decade. Also, not sure if it's named after the Ginsberg thing, but I think it's the perfect name for such an outstanding lp.
The recording is out of this world too, it's the first time I've heard that type of stuff so crisply recorded - which may factor in to why I love it so much.
Each to his own obviously - but, to me, saying brmc committed career suicide with howl is like saying the national started going down hill with alligator.
Career suicide
as in their lowest selling record up to that point. What that has to do with The National only you can answer...:-(
yet another comment with 'howl' in the subject
Funny, how it seems that I'm not alone here in considering Howl to be excellent. Maybe it's their Sister Lovers (Big Star's third album, commercial suicide, not that there was much commercial life before it mind)
^this
Howl is a fine, fine record...
easily their best offering IMO - even those tunes that didn't make the cut but which made the Howl Sessions cd (especially 'Mercy') are absolute belters.. Their 'career suicide' you speak of was probably more as a result of the rather tame 'Take them on....' and the subsequent low expectations that followed.
It's called a reference...
Taking them for a run?
Are they "exercising" their demons with a jog round the park or are they exorcising their demons?!
I know, I'm sorry, couldn't resist it! Good review and a great band. From what I've heard of the album so far I think we're looking at a return to the form that so many of us have been waiting for. Great stuff! Can't wait to see them in the UK again.
They're going running
with The National.
this
is a fantastic album! only just got around to giving it a spin - superb!
