i saw a recipe for it on tv with cornbread, which looks like the best bread ever. (banana bread is second best bread ever)

Sounds nice, i might make it
But as i'm not a multi-millionaire i'm going to leave out the pound of scallops. Anyone got any idea what gumbo file is and whether you can actually buy it in supermarkets? The rest i'm going to make up from the skeleton instructions, the size of crab cans would also be useful information!
American measurements
The only "cups" I have in my kitchen are giant mugs for hot chocolate, little thimble things for saki or something, and a couple of different sized mugs. Why does America insist on not using scales to measure ingredients like everyone else?! If someone could convert these cups into ounces or even grams that would be much more useful.
