SHADY BARD
From Birmingham on the ultra-hip Static Caravan label, Shady Bard deal in scruffily atmospheric indie folk songs, enriched by a miniature orchestra of pianos, guitars, casiotones, violin, cello, French horn and samples which burst occasionally into catastrophic scuzz. Influences include Spiritualized, Sparklehorse, Grandaddy, Sigur Ros, Teletext, pine cones, Elgar, fresh naan and chips, and ginger beer. They have played on BBC Radio 2, Radio 4 and 6music, and performed at Green Man Festival 2006. Their last single, “Penguins” (on limited edition ice clear vinyl) sold out in a matter of days and their debut album “From The Ground Up” will be released on May 28th.

MONKEY SWALLOWS THE UNIVERSE
Monkey Swallows the Universe are an acoustic indiepop band from Sheffield, centred around the original founding duo of Nat Johnson & Kevin Gori, who formed the band in 2004. The band expanded in 2005 to include Catherine Tully on violin, Andy George on cello & Rob Dean on drums. Their debut album “The Bright Carvings” on the independent record label Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation made Rough Trade’s top 100 Albums of 2006, and they have just inked a deal with Loose Records to release the follow-up “The Casket Letters”. The band have supported Mercury-nominated Richard Hawley and Camera Obscura on tour, performed sessions on both BBC Radio 6 and XFM, and been variously described as "something special" (Stylus Magazine), "big big news" (Rough Trade) and "boss" (Richard Hawley).

TANAKH
Tanakh is the name for music written and improvised by a revolving collective of musicians headed up by principle songwriter Jesse Poe. Although currently residing in Florence, Italy, Poe comes from a background of American rural music. His great-grandfather wrote country ballads and his great aunts and uncle had a live radio program broadcast out of Indiana. Besides Tanakh, Poe has produced/engineered for Jim White, sung back up and played electric guitar for Six Organs of Admittance, worked on film music for short independent films including Greater than ½, and is a published author. Album “Ardent Fevers” (2006) was released to excellent reviews, most notably in Pitchfork, while this year’s follow-up “Saunder’s Hollow” (featuring Isobel Campbell) went one better and made the cover.
“Sweet melodies and an unerring sense for the understated narrative… there is a sense of loss or dislocation that hovers mirage-like around the edges here, as though the whole mysterious enterprise might vanish in a cloud of smoke if addressed too directly. Intoxicating.” (PitchFork)
