Has music media become over saturated?

There must be at least 20 music channels on Sky, constantly ramming mainstream music down people's throats.

Every band under the sun is available to listen to at myspace.com, and soon on facebook. For free. You just have to go back to their page and click on play. No need for investment here, financially or emotionally.

iTunes means that if people hear a track they like by a new band, instead of going and investing in an album and building up a solid opinion and musical relationship with the band, they can just download the one song they like and never bother digging any deeper.

And don't get me started on Radio 1.

All of this leads to shallow listeners and shallow music being pushed on us constantly.

I think this is damaging what you and I might call 'Alternative' music.

Gone are the days when me and my mates would almost jump with joy when an alternative band (at the time) like Ash or Green Day hit number 27 in the charts. These days half of the mainstream is the so called 'alternative'.

Back then we really had to FIND new bands we liked. I imagine the kids of today just listen to what is forced upon them and even the ones who reject mainstream pop are still led by magazines such as Kerrang into yet more mainstream drivel mascarading as the 'other way'.

Maybe I'm just getting old...
