Formerly the some-time backing group for labelmate Badly Drawn Boy, Alfie signed to British indie label Twisted Nerve in their own right. As a centrepiece of the late 90's/early 00's New Acoustic Movement, Alfie earned their critical credentials by sounding like "the young Stone Roses infusing their Manc cool into the Beta Band's 21st Century folk." (NME) The truth was however, that the band had carved out a truly individual niche with the inclusion of a french horn and a double bass. They released their debut 'Alfie EP' in February 2000, followed by two more 7"s, all compiled on their debut album If You Happy With You Need Do Nothing (2001).
