Tracy Chapman
Tracy Chapman was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Wooster School in Connecticut, and later attended Tufts University, where she read Anthropology. It was while she was there that she began singing in coffee houses, night clubs and in the streets around Harvard Square. She released her debut album, Tracy Chapman, in 1988 to critical acclaim. It spawned the hits ‘Fast Car’, ‘Baby Can I Hold You’ and ‘Talkin’ Bout A Revolution’. Tracy Chapman topped the album charts across the globe and earned Tracy three Grammy awards, including ‘Best New Artist’. It went on to sell in excess of 10 million copies and, over a decade later, it still makes regular appearances in album charts across the world. In 1989, she released Crossroads, which topped the UK charts again, and this was followed by the multi-Platinum Matters Of The Heart in 1992. 1995’s New Beginning earned Tracy her fourth Grammy for the track ‘Give Me One Reason’. 2000 saw the release of Telling Stories, an album that demonstrated her enduring appeal and relevance.
