Ana Silvera
“Silvera is a songsmith whose music simply aches beauty…pure poetry” Time Out
Ana Silvera is a singer and songwriter hailing from London. Soloing with English National Opera by her teens, Ana set about defining a unique song-writing style of the lush, tender, waltzy order – think Jacques Brel in English with fewer Gauloises, plus a pinch of Regina Spektor and Leonard Cohen thrown in for good measure. She plays the guitar too, and is accompanied on the double bass and cello by cohort Jon Cottle.
Most recently, Ana has played her first dates in New York accompanied by bassist with Antony and the Johnsons, Jeff Langston.
‘What interests me is telling archetypal stories in a new way, and unfolding those stories from unexpected perspectives' says Ana; perspectives which encompass everything from a starlet in war-torn Paris, a biblical and murderous Salome, an Irish choirboy and a dead poet’s wife. Not forgetting herself too, on occasion.
Ana moved to East Berlin a couple of years back and started playing in anti-folk hideouts like Café Harlem and In Eimer as well as renowned jazz dens such as A-Trane. Returning to London, she hooked up with alt-country boy wonder Yo Zushi (Pointy Records), and had fun playing to packed crowds at London venues such as the Borderline.
Right now, Ana performs regularly in London haunts such as The Water Rats (Club Fandango nights), as well as more well-heeled places like the West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge where she was recently let loose on a Steinway. The results have been committed to disc and have just been released as a limited edition on indie label OT records.
