Maths Class are an angular Brighton based five piece, formed in early 2006. Barely in their twenties, the line-up is Tim Sketchley (vocals), Piers Cowburn (synth and vocals), Andy Davies (guitar and vocals), Aleksandar Damms (bass guitar) and Michael Gartside (drums).
They have already built up a whirlwind reputation for their energetic, chaotic live shows, “the sort that causes impromptu nosebleeds”, NME. They’ve gained massive support from Vice magazine, playing the launch of Vice Spain in Barcelona and their Tales of the Jackalope festival. Artrocker have featured them heavily after they first played their club night in February 2007; they also played an unforgettable set at this year’s renowned Artrocker Festival. Last year they performed as part of the very first Underage Festival and gained support slots from Foals and Battles, placing Maths Class in the finest company of some of today’s most pioneering and groundbreaking bands.
Their debut AA side single ‘Emporio Laser/Cushion Glamour’ was released on Life Is Easy Records in November 2007. It was well received, selling out in two weeks, and gaining radio play from Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens.
The next release, ‘Now This Will Take Two Hands’, shows a band that have constantly developed their genre-defying sound. ‘Now This Will Take Two Hands’ contains five songs, whose greatest strength lies in their unpredictability; each track incorporating musical styles and song structures that other acts would struggle to fit into one short record.
Keen to establish themselves even further, they have already started to work on their next EP, which is set to follow in the autumn. With that, and a string of UK shows over the spring and summer, 2008 looks set to be a well-deserved breakthrough year for Maths Class.
