Aussie rascals The Vines are to return with a new album and single in the new year.
Their second album, titled 'Winning Days' and produced by 'Highly Evolved' collaborator Rob Schnapf, is due to hit stores on 8th March 2004. The release will be preceeded by a single, 'Ride', on 23rd February.
The band say that 'Winning Days' took them three months to record and mix, during the process of which only one day was spent in conflict. Bassist Patrick Matthews recently admitted, "We could have ended up at each other's throats because we were out in the middle of nowhere. But there was only one day like that."
The track listing for the album is as such:
-
Ride
Animal Machine
TV Pro
Autumn Shade 2
Evil Town
Winning Days
She's Got Something to Say to Me
Rainfall
Amnesia
Sunchild
Fuck the World

Re: The Vines: F**k The Download
Aw. Rather like The Libertines, the NME has done everything possible to put me off The Vines by wetting themselves over the band, and more specifically, Craig. Craig needs help, not the journalist equivalent of 'egging on' that he receives ... and did anyone see their performance on Later? That was just wrong.
BUT... for all that a) their live shows are a lottery and b) the NME should shut the £$&* up about them, "Highly Evolved" is a great record.

Yeah it annoys me that people write them off just because NME made them out to be better than they were. I've read so many reviews that call them "boring garage rock" - personally I think that's rubbish. They have some dangerously hairy moments - the riff on the start of "In the Jungle" still scares me a bit but before long it veers off into that special brand of acidic bugglegum insanity.
Craig is actually a great songwriter, and the arrangements are extremely well-crafted if you listen. I was sure I wasn't going to like them, but in the end I think the niche they've found is great.
And yeah "Fuck the World" is good, even if it's more of the same and a bit lyrically challenged :)

Hmmm, not so sure. To me, the Vines aren't anything special. Craig stumbles around onstage like trying to be some kind of "troubled genius" (hmmm, wonder which ones of his heroes he is trying to emulate....). The songs (judging by their debut album) are not great, they're ok - it's been done before, nothing revolutionary, nothing mind-blowing - just ok music. Nothing more, nothing less.

i think the vines are pretty cool. its weird ive had the majority of songs off there second album for just over a year. (autumn shade 2, drown the baptists, fuck the world, ride) and ride is a quality song.
i think nme shud be banned from calling people the best band ever, as they also ruined the yeah yeah yeahs. every 20 bands the nme say 'best debut ever' about, maybe 3 of them are still remembered in 10+ years time. i can never tell if craig plays up to it, as surely hes not that crazy :s.
ps. im new on the forums, but this site is the best site for finding new music :], well played whoever makes it. keep reviewing all the latest ep's.

Re: The Vines: F**k The Download
with regards to your vines article, rob, I have to say that I too downloaded much of the second album and feel a trifle disappointed. Ride just seems like such a laboured attempt at making a Teen Spirit style anthem, whilst Fuck The World is tuneless nonsense. However, those two songs do not mean the rest of the album is bad: She's Got Something is a wonderful, stadium sized slab of rock n roll, whilst rainfall is simply a delight. Winning Days is also good, as is Amnesia - It's definitely as haunting as Karma Police by Radiohead or How Soon is Now by the Smiths, if not as good. By the way, the title of the album is Winning Days, and it's release may be brought forward to early February if the record company feels there is sufficient public interest in a world-wide tour.
Re: The Vines: F**k The Download
yep matt, fuck the world sounds like a death metal type song :s. which doesn't really work.
i dont actually think i have the real versions of the songs, just whatever was kicking around on a demo tape.. so ill buy the album when it comes out. i'm sure it'll probably get slated by music magazines :(

I've got about five or six from the new album, some new, some demos. There isn't really much stylistic progression, which is a bit disappointing, but I guess that doesn't matter much because the quality's still so high. I don't mind the influences being obvious, either - it never lapses into pastiche so it doesn't bother me much.
"Winning Days" and "Sun Child" are both gorgeous.

Craig is a genious and I have faith in him because of his passion for his work ,it's spiritualy thereputic for him...he is very talented and I believe the next album would be better ; his taste in music is great and he put that passion into his style . I come to thinkof it as tounge and cheek and fascinating ...a little barbaric perhaps but totally awsome. Lyrically he is very spiritual Craig's new releases is just absolutley spectacular.
