Rejoice! An interesting venue finally wins an award!
Kilburn, North London. No, it's not one of the 'fashionable' parts of London and if you've ever lived on one of the council estates off the main road, you'll know it can often be mildly hostile. It does however contain a DiS-favourite venue that has now been proclaimed the Time Out Live Venue of the Year!
Having recently played host to the talents of Battles, My Latest Novel, The Books and Gemma Hayes, The Luminaire is marking itself out as a discerning venue for new and cult artists, with one of the most welcoming atmospheres of any venue and great sound to match.

very 'plush' and gets people out of the Camden/old street vortex. They want to sort out the crappy dj equipment though and the irritable bar staff though

Its a wonderful venue when you're inside, but they didn't give my band a gig, therefore they stink. ;)
Also their website is self congratulatory. I don't care how many feet west they are of the barfly, it's still crappy to get to from 'normal' London

It's EASY. Kilburn on the Jubilee line is easy to get to, then it's a three-minute walk.
Kilburn Park is an eight minute walk and that's Bakerloo.
Brondesbury overground goes to many of our houses (it's on the Silverlink Metro) if you're part of the North London posse, including Cally Road, Hackney and all the way round to Stratford, as well as going west through Kensal Rise, Richmond etc.
There are also direct buses from Waterloo and Oxford Circus (139 and another one) that stop virtually outside the venue.
It's just laziness.

bottom line is, it's an ace venue run by nice guys who put on good bands. they slashed the hire cost for the christmas Smalltown America show to less than 25% their normal charge, as it was a charity thing (how many venues would do that?), and andy inglis is one of the nicest blokes you'll meet.
plus, they do some WICKED evil shooters.

it is an ace place. good sound, spacious dj box, terribly comfy, and i like the bar. and it's easy to get to and from, even from south london!1!!11!one. and they're considerate about getting bands offstage in time for people to catch trains etc.
also there's a REALLY good pizza place in the vicinity.
i remember when people wouldn't go to brixton cos it was "out of the way".
but isn't that true for most places from crouch end? :P

I live a little outside of London, so have to get to liverpool street by 12 or tott hale for 12.20.
Normal London consists of anywhere that I can easily get to one of those two stations from, and not have to leave the gig at 10:30.
I just find it a little amusing, that as far as the usual gig circuit goes, yes they are a little out of the way, and they are SO defensive, nay smug about that being a slightly arguable point, when you fish a compass out and get anal about it.

sound is really good compared to similar size venues like the spitz which sux.
my latest novel headlined the other night with support from jeffrey lewis and what a gig that was.. the howling bells this coming monday with devics ( sara lov AND HB's Juanita Stein on the same bill ....ooooh!now calm down boys!!) AND Mazarin solo set from Quentin. cannot think of a better bill in upcoming weeks..
