Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

Well Stuart Pearce was a left back his whole career so that's that one sorted out...

I'll take Pallister into the CB berth off your bench, and play Zola in the hole behind the strikers. Ahead of Juninho.

In fact I'm gonna come back with my own team after I've given it due consideration... this is a serious matter.

RM - Beckham
CM - Keane
CM - Viera
LM - Robben

CF - Henry
CF - Shearer

Far too many Man United players but then this is limited to the Premiership

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

GK: Petr Cech - Unbeatable. Just shades it from Schmeichel.

RB: Gary Neville - Solid, dependable. Everything you want from a full back.
CB: Sol Campbell - Injury prone these days but at his best, untouchable.
CB: Des Walker - You'll never beat Des Walker.
LB: Stuart Pearce - who else?

RM: David Beckham - In his last couple of seasons for Man Utd really was awesome.
CM: Gianfranco Zola - THE BEST player I've ever seen in the English game.
CM: Paul Scholes - The main reason why England's midfield looks so poor these days - because he's no longer a part of it!
LM: Ryan Giggs - At his best was simply unstoppable.

FWD: Stan Collymore - For the season when Forest finished 3rd. The best striker in Europe for those 9 months.
FWD: Thierry Henry - And possibly the best striker in the world today.

SUBS:
Eric Cantona - Inspirational but blotted his copybook by being a mardarse when opposing fans criticised him!
Steve Bruce - Never got an England cap. Why?
Peter Schmeichel - Unbeatable.
Alan Shearer - Uses his elbows too much but prolific in front of the goal.
David Ginola - when he was at Newcastle in the mid 90s he was different class, and at the time possibly the best individual player I'd ever seen in the English game.

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

GK: Massimo Taibi

RB: Frank Sinclair (Although you gotta love the Own Goal King!)
CB: Peter Shirtliff
CB: Darren Peacock
LB: Nigel Worthington

RW: Diao
MD: Ali Dia (His mate pretended to be George Weah, got him into Southampton where he played like 16 mins of Premier League footy - and he got booked!)
LW: Andy Myers

FW: Uwe Rosler
FW: Florin Radaciou
FW: Marco Boogers

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

Nigel Worthington does not deserve a place in that team of yours! He's a legend!

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

Put John Harkes in there instead!
Ron Atkinson's first signing for Forest. Made one appearance and we lost 8-1 at home to Man U! He was that bad he made Jesper Blomqvist look good that day, and never played again! And he's an ex-Sheepshagger to boot.

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

And Jermaine Jenas. What the fuck does he actually do, apart from give the ball away?

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

We'll have him back at Forest if you don't want him!

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

Hey, it's nothing to do with me where he goes. I just despair at his constant inclusion in the England team. I've seen him play about four times, and every time he makes me want to throw things at the telly with his utter ineptitude.

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

But surely Bamos, he's worth a place ahead of the likes of Owen Hargreaves, Kieron Dyer, Phil Neville, Jamie Carragher and David James?
And probably as much as Steven Gerrard - the latest in a long line of scousers who is great for his club but dire for his country yet will probably get 80-90 caps (see also John Barnes and Steve McManaman).

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

You've got to measure it on people in his position only, I think. Saying David James doesn't deserve a place in squad at Jenas' expense makes no sense. Even if it is right. And does anyone know Jenas' actual position? Central, pushing on? Holding and clearing up, which he was trying to do for Spurs last night it appears? Wide on the right, where he played against Australia?

I think Carra is worth a place in the squad, as is Phil Neville as a useful utility fall-back option. Jenas is just in a long, long line for a midfield place that should by rights also include every single midfielder who plays on Hackney Marsh on a Sunday. At least they appear able to pass to teammates.

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

You've seen him play one game for Spurs and all of a sudden he's no better than what's on Hackney Marshes!
He always looked best for Forest and Newcastle playing at the head of a diamond formation, in a sort of attacking/probing midfield role.
Just because Eriksson might play at right back, centre forward and left midfield all in the same half of the same game isn't a lot to go on to be honest.
As for Neville - now there's a player who no one has a clue where he's meant to play - almost 15 years after becoming a professional footballer.
Carragher - average clogger/stopper, but international class? Never in a million years.

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

Jenas always flatters to deceive when I see him nowadays - he isn't fulfilling his potential that he was displaying when he was younger.

I'd like to see Carrick get a go at the holding midfield role. He played quite well in the American tour we did in the summer. I'd have:

Beckham - Lampard - Carrick - Joe Cole

as the starting four in the middle, with Gerrard and Wright-Phillips as the main two subs to change it up. The others are squad players. I've always been a fan of Danny Murphy since he joined Liverpool from Crewe. I'd like to see him get an opportunity.

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

I like the look of those four across the midfield.
I think Carrick is one of the most underrated players in the country.

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

A centre back duo of Winston Bogarde and Pascal Cygan would make Henry, Drogba, Rooney and co........wet themselves laughing?!

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

Titus Bramble and Jean-Alain Boumsong have that covered already, surely?

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

I started to put together a comedy XI, but then I got bored. It did, however, include Frank Sinclair and Ali Dia. It would also have included Sasa Ilic and Francis Benali (legend that he is).

I quite liked Uwe Rosler...

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

Yeah, but Uwe never really set the place alight did he? And his was Maine Road's main striker for a while, hence his inclusion.

Benali - best 'tache from recent memory!

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

I reckon your selections are too old-skool. The premiership is stronger and better now than it has been. It wook us a long time to get over the ten-year European ban after Heisel. So bearing that in mind:

Cech

Ferreira
Campbell
Ferdinand
A. Cole

Essien
Gerrard
Robben
Duff

Henry
Rooney

subs: (the oldies have to be worth a shout somewhere)
Scmeichel
Adams
Keane
Zola
Pearce

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

Chelsea fan by any chance?

Ferreira is not that good, not as good as Rob Jones, Dan Petrescu or Gary Neville in their prime.

And Essien has only been in the Premiership for like a month!!!

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

And yes, the Premier League may be better now than it's ever been (but that is highly debatable) but you can't just dismiss every player purely because of the period of time they played in. That's like slating George Best and Bobby Moore purely because they played 40 years ago. Which is an error.

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

GK: Schemichel

RB: Gary Nev
LB: Stuart Pearce
CB: Rio Ferdinand
CB: Tony Adams

LW: Ryan Giggs
RW: David Beckham
DM: Keane
AM: Scholes

FW: T. Henry
FW: Alan Shearer

S: Seaman
S: Sol Cambell
S: Lampard
S: Van Nistelroy
S: Bergkamp

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

you nearly got it right there, but lampard should be nowhere near anyones best team. the most overrated player in history...

and rooney and ronaldo would make at least the bench for me. the two most exciting and talented players in the country by a mile.

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

Essien?? 6/7 games in and he's in your all time Premiership team, ye gods

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

Liverpool fan actually. Rob Jones was great, have to agree with that one. Neville is and always has been cack though.
Essien is better than Makelele as a defensive midfielder I'd say. Suppose Keane was better in his prime but don't think Essien is far off. And it doesn't matter how long he's been around shorely.
Chelsea now are better than Man U ever were as well. Highest points tally ever last season etc. They'll do consistently well in the champs league. United used to get regularly hammered by the likes of Barce and Madrid, and they were the only English club who would do even remotely well.

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

Spot the Gooner! Ok so maybe im going to be a bit biased here, but the Arsenal team of '98 still take sum helluva beating thrown in with a few of United players (sorry but i gotta admit that) Fuck Chelsea, they are boring...

GK - Peter Schmeichel (sorry Seaman but I have memories of the Nayim and Ronaldinho lobs that made you a tit)
RB - Lee Dixon - better than Neville anytime!
LB - Stuart "psycho" Pearce (what a legend!)
CB - Tony Adams - "Best cb that has ever existed
CB - Steve Bruce - solid " "
RM - David Beckham - le tiss was too much of a luxury
CM - Patrick Vieira - the engine of the team
CM - Roy Keane - a cunt, but a fuckin quality rock
LM - Marky Overmars (quickest winger ever - visions of his goal in 1-0 at Utd that clinched '98 title)
FW - Shearer (who else?!) - goal machine & target man
FW - Ian Wright - bang bang goal machine

Re: Ultimate Premier League Team

woops, i almost forgot the subs, cos my team is too good to be "ranieri'd" about with: But here goes my subs...

1) Seaman - watch the weight pile on as he warms the no1 bench seat up
2) Le Tiss - becks and marky not doin it? le tiss will - fuckin quality to bring on if you need inspiration
3) Stan Collymore - woah what a lej! when he was a the 'pool he was quality when fit
4) Marcel Desailly - utility man, can play holding role or centre back, was quality early on at chelsea
5) Ryan Giggs - a like for like replacement for either wing
