What the general opinion on here? I really like them but know some people that hate them with a passion!
Reply
i like them
all there songs sound the same and i prefer the older versions of songs
new versions too overproduced
Yup, agree with you bout the older versions.
New versions sound too polished, kinda taking away what I liked about them before.
I like them but dont understand the hype
their new single is just kind of bland really
i think i like them
i liked daddy's gone and the guitar lines, but their lyrics are really jarring, especially "my name is geraldine, i'm you're social worker".
Based purely on their performance on Jools Holland
I think they are unmitigated shite.
Bland, forgettable music + shite name = eurgh.
Haha, yeah this is the kind of hatred I mean.
I really don't understand it!
Maybe they had a really off day then
but I was actually forgetting the song while it was still playing. It was dire. Maybe it was just that one song or perfomance but, to be honest, I'm not really tempted to investigate further.
It
was an off day, to be honest. But I guess if you don't like pop songs then you won't like their songs.
i liked them
But they were dreadful at latitude.
And no-one else thinks they've completely ripped off The Mary Chain?
As in a shit Jesus and Mary Chain tribute band. Inevitable comparison obviously cos they come from the same country and everything. But as has been said that Jools performance bored me to tears as well.
Yeah, they are suspiciously similar to JAMC
One of the best live bands I've seen this year
Granted, its not entirely original but if their songs being played on the radio influences some 15-year-old kid to dig deeper and listen to some Meat Whiplash, Twilight Sad or Sky Saxon rather than the usual Oasis-meets-Libertines done badly spiel then surely their job is done.
And Glastonbury
I hadn't heard anything by them before that
I really liked them at Latitude
but I didn't when I'd listened to them before
Wierd
i'm struggling to see
what's so AMAZING about them.. they're clearly not the 'best new band in Britain', or even close.
they're okay though, but quite how they've managed to go from being scotland's biggest joke to the saviour of rock 'n roll still stuns me.
^This last sentence, lots.
I saw them supporting someone else years ago and they played doo-wop, kinda 50's rock and roll influenced chant along garbage, while wearing bright green baseball jackets.
Next time I see them is on the telly a few years later, all dressed in black, making a fuzzy racket.
I don't mind them, the three singles I've heard have all been ok. Wouldn't mind seeing them again.
Shit description up there, apologies.
They looked and sounded like bad Grease extras.
Let's all wait three albums, hey?
No, only joking :-) But it's the typical story, ain't it? Good tunes, so a few people get excited. The people who hear the excitement get their hopes up (if they're nice people) or are resolutely determined to hate them already (twunts), so the nice people come away feeling over-hyped and the twunts can shout the loudest... Same as it ever was.
Saw them at Glasto
Can't remember a single second of their set, All I remember is that the tent was red packed, and the girl's bikini top to my right was holding her in just right.
i really dig them
and can't wait for the new album!
think
they're ok. I pray for the day when the cover the Proclaimers. This will never happen. This is a shame.
RACIST
hahaha
it'd be their biggest hit, of that im sure.
Think the hatred stems from...
the fact people are fed up being told they are the best new British band.
They are not event the best new band in Glasgow let alone Scotland.
*even
Doh.
And for what its worth, I think they have some appealing qualities and can see why people would like them but I find them dire. Can't get past the awful lyrics, singing and one-trick-pony sound.
I like them
So what, nothing new, sound like JAMc and all that bollocks.
Personally i think theyre songs are excellent and theyre really good live.
one of the funniest lyrics of recent times
My name is Geraldine I'll be your social worker
Laugh out loud funny. Like a council estate spinal tap.
Council Estate Spinal Tap :D
You can fuck my wife.
Their songs are well
put together (but then they are rather tried and trusted chord sequences) and I am sure they are better live now than when I saw them last summer if only by virtue of the fact they have played so many times since then. They are also as it happens quite nice folk.
Just saying all that is not enough for me to overlook what I don't like about their music. But thats me personally.
Only point I was making above was that this happens with any band that gets over-hyped, a lot of people get annoyed when they struggle to see what the fuss is about and this manifests as hatred for their music and the band themselves and they get torn apart on forums like this one.
All that aside and with no ill will I still just don't think they are that good musically.
they're not
the worst band I've seen live...but they really weren't very good.
I don't hate them...but then I wouldn't want to voluntarily listen to any of their music either.
Massively over-rated
the jesus and mary chain
with the wrong reid brothers singing (ie the proclaimers)
hahahaha
pffft
my name is geraldine
I'll be your social worker..do do do!
don't seem to
be able to do anything relevant outisde the "G" postcode
I heard them on tv
it wasn't controversial enoug hto call awful, it was just pointless.
I'd file them with the Guillemots ...
ie, bands who seemed like they were going to be interesting but when push came to shove took the easy lowest-common-denominator route. And whose names begin with G also.
I did
really like them
but having heard the new versions of their songs, they're terrible. Over-produced (flattened) and someone's obviously told James Allan to over-emphasise his accent, to the extent it now sounds fake.
Pretty average
Some okay songs but most of it is just stadium filler and to me it all feels a bit trite.
