Seriously, it's like for some reason he's alright. I just don't understand. Kanye West is just as appalling as 50 Cent, Timbaland et al.

Please explain to me in less than 50 words why he's the preferred Indie choice of rubbish MC?

I don't really rate him

50 Cent is wack too.

Timberland is a good producer.

Lil' Wayne is where it's at for mainstream million selling rappers.

Phew, glad someone agrees with me.

Don't you think Timbaland used to be a good producer? He's just boring now.

I aint keen on alot of his stuff

but I think he is good at what he does. He seems to make a hell of a lot of chart smashes.

he was amazing back in the day

producing aaliyah and stuff, and missy elliot, bubba sparxx, and even justin timberlake

^ yeah

but now... "i've only got four minutes..."

sad

kanye west is alright

timberland is mostly amazing, even if he's going through a gash patch.
i think the reason people like kanye west because he doesn't go in for the faux gangsta posturing that 50 cent etc goes for. commercial rap would be dead if it was left for g-unit and flo rida. kanye west and lil wayne are saving it

true

unless Will Smith started releasing again hehe

what i was trying to say ^

And G-Unit are nothing now. Nothing

to be fair though

he does plenty of posturing himself.

he's a middle class art graduate from a wealthy family yet he still goes on about being a picked on black american.

atleast 50 cent isn't suddenly pretending he's lord of the manner. he did get shot 9 times so i think his gangsta image might be more than posturing.

manor =

manner. oops

rap is all about a bit of posturing

and dick swinging it has kinda got engraned in the culture sorappers just end up doing it I guess. I aint fussed if it's fake or real as long as it sounds alright.

good point

it'd be nice if they could just drop the act wouldn't it. like if they all sat about being neurotic and shit instead of being all macho and silly.

b-b-b-b-bbut

Kanye is hugely neurotic! Many of his songs deal with the posturing and machismo versus his own insecurities side by side.

do they?

hmmmmm. i thought they tended be very self-aggrandising - "you should be honoured by my lateness"

"if you know how mase felt

you'd know how my face felt"

and "you can be my black kate moss tonight"

are the only lyrics of his i can remember

terrible

kate moss is pretty ruff these days. i thought someone handsome like kanye could have someone much fitter.

Few call him handsome

what with the reconstructed jaw and all.

As to the self aggrandising, the point with Kanye that gets him praise is that he addresses and recognises his own BS on the fronting thing and admits to it. The indie bed wetter rappers can be so 'right on' all the time that it gets a bit sickly.
He is not The Best Thing Ever but he does try and reconcile the two approaches.

He's WELL handsome

Also, that is a very funny image. I have visions of El-P urinating on themselves in bed while crying into their rhyme books.

thank you!

Well errr each to their own!

I do like El-P but he is so blinking intense all the time!
Why so serious producto?

see below

i like a bit of intensity. like blackalicious.

jimi

the explorer = the voice of reason

Late Registration and Graduation are on the whole awful albums

COllege Dropout is great though, and is nice rap, if you catch my drift, and this may be why the indiez like him.

soulja boy FTW

i like that one

it's definitely got weirder production

YOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUU

SOULJA BOY TELLEM

ha ha!

seriously, that song cracks me up. it's all sparse. there's nothing going on apart from some awful marimba samples and a hi-hat.

yooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.

i'd take it over kanye raping daft punk or collaborating with chris martin.

eeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

I like the Stronger beat

lyrics are horrid though :(

soulja boy

must be the weirdest number one in recent memory. it's just a fake stel drum and a veeery southern black man rambling almost incoherently about coming on his girlfriends back.

YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU

it's well weird innit?

strange times

Have you heard

the Travis Barker remix?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKQgDY0pZ68

The boy can drum!

kanye west is shit

I hate rap but 50 cent >>>>>> kanye

also

the only reason indie homos like him is cause he sampled Can

did he?

remind me NEVER to hear that. I'd hate to be the Kanye's mark chapman.

'the Kanye'

I wasn't aware he was a wrestler! ;)

if he was

he'd be rubbish at that too

Yeah

it's better that you don't hear it

Yeah

he sampled Can, i forgot what the track name is, that one that has a similar melody to 'my favourite things'

and turned it into a misogynistic crunk song piece of shit

i don't even want to know

how that is possible.

this also

lol

and the nme. it was a joint effort.

i don't get him either

i like my hip-hop either angry and intense like the MC wants to jump out of my stereo and rob me at gunpoint or quite fun and bouncy like Outkast or Ludacris. Kanye just sounds really laid back and relaxed, i don't really get any emotion from the words he's saying, and often his lyrics are about quite weighty issues (in comparison to the likes of 50 Cent et al).

i much prefer it with some conviction

yes. like El-P or NWA.

hmmmm

haven't you got some oasis or beatles to listen to?

kanye ain't the best mc,

but is possibly the greatest ever hip-hop producer, wish he'd do more. lil' wayne is good, but don't forget kanye gave him the beat for 'comfortable'. these are all certified kanye bangers...
jay-z- heart of the city
scarface- guess who's back
talib kweli- get by
ludacris- stand up
jay-z- lucifer
twista- overnight celebrity
consequence- so soulful
consequence- getting out the game
shyne- more or less
talib kweli- i try
mos def- sunshine
the game- dreams
common- the corner

surely that mantle

belongs to dr dre?

Tupac, Snoop, NWA.

graduation

was mostly rubbish,
and 'stronger' made for onr of the most compelling examples of sampling gone wrong: he's just rapping over a daft punk backing track (and badly at that). can i get a witness?? please!
