Joe Lean and the JJJ album news

http://www.nme.com/news/joe-lean-and-the-jing-jang-jong/38368

I appreciate that many people here won't really have much interest in the band or their album, but I thought I'd post this up just because it seems like a very strange (unheard of?) thing to do.

Basically, they've cancelled the release of their debut album and seemingly scrapped the recordings. Very weird decision, sounds to me like the record label/management weren't satisfied with what they were getting.

Thoughts?

  • I shudder

to think how much money has been invested in this band so far. They're going to need some big sales figures.

  • Jay Jean & The Joom Jang Jobbie

  • Joe Lean and the J-J-Jigawatts?

  • Jang Jung & The Jang Jimmy Jog Jog

  • Weird

*runs off to ebay to sell his copy*

    • You have a copy?

Is it the sampler or the full album promo?

      • The full promo

        Got sent it last week

        • Clearly, you must ensure that you upload it onto the internet before you sell it.

Don't know about you, but I could do with a good laugh...

  • Jolene & the John John Jensens

    • Hahahaha

Shitcanned! As soon as I saw the thread, I knew. They've bought on to a lot of tours, released one ok single and got a lot of press for talking a lot while doing very little. Let's see what happens when they take a second bite of the cherry.

Interestingly, I think this'll make the album more listened to. It'll get on P2P networks and blogs, and people will give it a spin to see why they pulled it. Imagine it'll be a half-decent record considering the cash that's been spent.

Btw, second record of the day to be postponed. Has the record industry decided to fold its (new artist) hand during the credit crunch, and stick to releases by established artists?

      • I don't think

this is the same as Emmy's - I believe Close Harbour is a label she has a hand in and she said she wasn't happy with the mastered version. I'm not sure a release date had been penned in either.

        • Fair enough

Thought CH was a Moshi Moshi imprint(?), and they might have had a say on release dates. With no solid date in the first place, I stand corrected.

Still, both getting put out in the (safer) new year. Ideal time for a debut album, less competition, less pressure.

  • I'm sure

this has nothing to do with how, after a sizeable advance, heavy NME support and a ton of turn of the year press, their last single peaked at number 93. It's been quite weird (and, yes, not a little fun) watching how their year has progressed - their first single got delayed by about six weeks, their second by about two months, and this album was originally supposed to be out in May.

By the way, if you can stand it, go onto their Myspace, look at who their number one friend is and wonder what they're trying to tell us.

  • It's many a year

since I was a Stone Roses fanboy, so my facts may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they'd just about finished their debut (Garage Flower) in about '86 before shelving it and moving on to record what most people view as their debut proper (s/t).
Sooo... y'know... maybe in 2011 they'll come back with a classic pop album. Maybe...

    • Never listened to Garage Flower

      Was it any good?

    • erm

that's just a reprint of the nme.com news story. but thanks for trying.

  • On The Ning Nang Nong

    • Milligan

      Classy

    • hahahaha

better than the lyrics for their first single I bet....

  • Just remembered a similar case

Battle were doing quite well with singles up to the release of their album, then they decided to scrap the debut LP, put half of it out as a mini-album and re-record the rest with new songs. The album proper came out quite a while later and was roundly ignored. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_%28band%29#Break_the_Banks

    • the first one

      was actually fucking ace.

    • Indeed...

"Tendency", "Demons" and some of the other tracks on the Back To Earth EP and the scrapped Gareth Jones sessions were excellent. However, the eventual Break The Banks album was disappointing. I seem to be in the minority in thinking that they were a good live band, too.

They've split up now. Bizarrely, this was publicly confirmed not by the band, but by Toby and Tim via a message on the Transgressive forums.

    • Battle

      released an album?

      that is news to me...

  • It must be bad

The Observer Music Monthly gave it 2/5.

It think you have to commit mass genocide and make a record worse than Nickelback covering Limp Bizkit to get 1/5.

    • *I think

      even

    • Ouchies

The Observer Music Monthly is very influential for sales, I'm told. 2/5 is a mini-kiss of death there then.

Did it get any other reviews?

      • well the nme

gave it 8/10 and compare it to Smokey Robinson.

saw them on the nme tour. they are not at all good.

      • i think the point is

OMM tends to give everything 4/5 or 5/5

  • Aaaahh

Just when you think there's no justice in the world, something comes along like this.

  • The article

states that the album was completed last year, so surely if management/Vertigo/Mercury weren't happen then they would have quietly scrapped it then? My theory would be that they were stuck with this terrible album but tried to blow up the hype with huge press plugging (BBC Sound of 2008, NME Tour etc.) but when they started to get bad single and live reviews and were unable to build up a fanbase, have decided to start over.

Still, I'm sure nothing will change - they're a terrible band (and my friend who has interviewed them claims that, with the exception of Joe Lean, they're rather unpleasant people).

  • the singer in my band met him recently on a night out

she said she's never met anyone so self obsessed.

    "so, where do you live"

"Oh i don't have a home, per se, one day i'm in London, the next Paris, then New York, Madrid..."

"My fans are all so lovely, when i'm feeling down i just remember them and how my music has helped them and it makes it all worth it"

She said she had to really stop herself from laughing because he seemed to really believe what he was saying and didn't want to be rude as he was quite nice, but his head is just on another planet.

  • If the indie hyperbole wasn't already dead,

you can be certain it will be by next year - unless they reinvent themselves as a *brand new* band.

Congratulations on rubbishing sessions that probably cost a small fortune to produce in favour of a complete overhaul six months later.

  • Leak

Can someone please leak it, i wanna hear it.

  • the august 4th release date

is surely too close for the stock to have not been manufactured. i find the idea of half a million copies or whatever gathering dust in a warehouse somewhere pretty amusing.

  • the thread title alone

    scares me.

  • JOY JOY & The JOY JOYJ YOJ

  • LOL at the second comment.

  • No one will care about them in 2009.

    I reckon (and hope).
