I'm not so anti-Kooks as many DiSers probably are. In the past I think they've made some excellent radio friendly pop songs and I think Naive and She Moves In Her Own Way are, whilst not to my taste, the evidence of a band who are very good at what they do.
Their new song is appalling. Not only does it have (in "Shine On") literally the most uninspired song title ever, but they forgot to put a tune on it, the lyrics (never their strong point admittedly) make no coherent sense and have no bearing on the chorus and it genuinely is probably the worst attempt at radio-friendly pop I've ever heard.
In fact, as someone whose sat through countless god-awful open-mic singer-songwriters, I can say with confidence even the most inept would be ashamed of this effort.
Aren't major labels supposed to take creative control from bands. Shouldn't they stop anything this shit from happening?

Totally agree
It actually sounds like they themselves even hate the song. I don't even know how they've acheived that.
I think if you listen hard enough you can hear the singer sigh "oh my god, kill me now" during the chorus..
It actually does sound like that...
They do sound bored as fuck and like they have no confience in what they're doing whatsoever...
all I'll say
is imagine being the sound engineer/mixer/producer at THAT recording session.
I mean, recording sessions are dull anyway, but imagine having to listen to take after take after take of THAT song.
yes its very bad
I started a job 10/06/08 and they play a local radio station all day. Anyway Shine on was on the play list then (around 4 plays per day) and still is like one and a half months later! It makes me want to self-harm
# why do you
bite the hand that feeds?# stone cold tune.
I actually feel depressed
listening to Shine On. It's awful, depressingly bad infact. They really can't be fucked anymore can they if they can get away with shit like this selling thousands.
I haven't heard it.
I feel lucky.
I hope...
...that they fall on a large spike
I hope they sit on a large spike....
then a large spike fall on them, and the two meet at their peaks and balance leaving 2 large spike hinged by an odd Kook-shaped finger trap type contraption.
you don't really though.
i feel you should
stick to youre day job.. you are not a musicc critic.. the song has a real wide spread apeal and is the kind of song that likes to get stuck in youre head till you finally listen to it again, i feel the next single they might release is see the sun wich have to say is personally my favorite song ever check it out on utbe it is fantastic
Shut up you Kooks loving tit
Utbe eh
"you are not a music critic."
neither are you but you're still voicing your opinion on the song. exactly.

enjoy lovebox, too?
JAG!
It's a JAG.
sean08, you are a
twat
Look on the bright side
It's reminded me to go listen to House Of Love
Same :)
Word.
House Of Love = brilliant.
Why is this a surprise?
Everything the Kooks put out is terrible.
Nah
II/IO was alright, even if the singles from it were overplayed to maximum annoyance
I find it sinister.
The lyrics are really smug and patronising. like "o, you're a free spirit, you read shit magazines, I'm above the shit magazines though but its enough for your little mind. Shine on being a wild little girl"
Then the middle eight is a really bitter "why do you bit the hand that feeds?". i.e. 'you stupid stupid girl. don't upset Luke. He knows best. If I were you I'd want to have sex with Luke whenever he wants.'
God yeah
This is completely true.
I like it.
Shine shine shine on.
Tune.
i can see the headlines now
the kooks in terrible single shock horror
it's not my cup of tea but
I find it pretty inoffensive.
i struggle to listen to this song
more than anything else they have ever released
Watchin Nevermind the BUzzcocks on Dave
the other day, I laughed when Amstell said if you squint they almost look lke a real band. True dat.
Nearly as annoying as this song

If you think
that "Shine on" is bad I really suggest you to listen to “One last time”
“A b c d e f and g
Oh that reminds me of when we were free
Before life began to tear us apart
Remember those classes we thought we were so smart”
I'm fed up
of the amount of bland bullshit that seems to become popular and played to death on the wireless. "Shine On" is a bad as it gets. Completely woeawful.
I actually don't mind it...
all kooks singles
are terrible. and the singer has the most punchable face ever.
...and looks exactly like
that guy from the Pigeon Detectives, who in turn looks exactly like a girl from another NME indie band that sound exactly like The Kooks.
It's a vicious aesthetic circle with horrific retina-based consequences
Isn't it just
And he went out with Katie Melua. Throw her into the scene and my eyes would literally melt.
