  • yep.

    • Why arern't other films as good as this?

      • because most people are wankers

and need sex, explosions, muscles, cars, fart jokes, mistreatment of women, to enjoy any kind of film.

  • It's not that good. 7/10 at best.

    *Proceeds to duck*

    • proslo!

Are you back from wherever, or are you just catching a bit of internet time wherever? (wherever = New Zealand, was it?)

I don't know if I've actually ever seen the whole Shawshank Redemption. It was in our free movies at my old place and I meant to watch it properly, but never did and now I don't have TV at all, let alone cable.

      • I'm still in New Zealand at the moment

Just thought I'd kill some spare time in the office and catch up with you fellows. Shame the time difference means everyone's asleep.

I was in Cape Town until a week ago. Been in Wellington since then. It's quite nice. Little dull compared to South Africa though, I must say, but then it is nice not to get threatened with knives all the time...

        • go to wanaka if you get the chance

          lovely lakeside town

my other faves were the glaciers and wellington actually - really quite cool for such a small place

    • I always thought that someone's opinion couldn't be wrong,

after all it is their own opinion. You however, have proved this wrong.

      • I do like it, honest.

I just don't think it's particularly remarkable, as far as films go. Very solid, and in my mind I've always seen it as a modern successor to Hollywood classics like To Kill A Mockingbird. But I honestly can't understand why so many people think it's the best film ever (not just one of the best - *the* best).

If it was, I'd have felt like I did when I saw a film like There Will Be Blood. Instead it was kind of forgettable.

Oh, and the ending is appalling. Really, really ruins it.

        • I'm with you

100% on this proslo. The level of love this film gets is waaaaay beyond me

        • the ending is

a bit of a cop out. think they were pandering to the majority of the audience's 'needs' there.

        • I think people rate it that highly a lot of people don't care abot films.

I like it (a lot) but it has a certain 'coffee table' aspect to it that means it both gets praise from people who just love it and love a lot of films, and then it gets praise from people who probably only see one film a year and pick big obvious numbers they've been told are amazing.

When you stack this up against similar feel-good, wide-appeal films, it does very well indeed, so it ends up being hailed as this amazing classic.

  • Sophie still has my copy and I bet she's still never watched it.

  • it's a great film

    but i wouldn't rate it a 10

    • Nah...

      It's more a 9.9

  • i recommend The Escapist

you kind of get the gist from the title. i went to see it knowing nothing about it and it turned out to be great.

  • Why

this film is in so many Greatest Film Ever lists escapes me. I put it somewhere between Grifters and The Mighty Ducks

    • When it first came out

me and my friend saw it and it had only 3 days left to run at the cinema. When we came out we as good as woke up everyone in her halls of reseidence that night to tell them how good it was and make sure they all saw it. This was before there was any 'best film ever' hype, and it was like one of the best things i'd ever seen. Amazing film.

Although i tell u what no one ever says.. it's a *lot* like Escape from Alcatraz. I mean ridiculously so.

    • it was average

i mean, it's alright, but it's nothing special

  • YOU BE SURE AND THANK MAMA FOR THAT FAHNE PIE

  • i like it

but don't understand why it is so lauded. it's a good film, very effective emotionally, but it's hardly The Best Film Evah.

  • Gangs Of New York

    Traffic
    The Departed

    Get watching snails...

    • I've seen Gangs and The Departed

      Will watch Traffic tonight!

  • It was a bit of a box office failure, apparently

But is now regarded as one of the best ever innit. I think it's incredible.

You should see a brand new film called The Escapist, it's quite similar and also brilliant.

  • If you meet someone and its their favourite film,

    they're a dullard, though.

  • It's good.

Not a great that everyone proclaims though. A strong solid film. 7/10.

  • it is very good

i dont think its overrated. I dont find it hard to see why people choose to like this over any other film. Its quite easy to become emotionally attached to the characters and the ending gives you the ultimate feel good factor. Most peoples opinions of movies are based on the last 30 mins nearly always arent they?

    • how

can the ending be a "cop-out pandering to the audience's needs" when the Stephen King novel on which it was based has exactly the same ending?

Truly a brilliant film, though agree that because it's been so lauded everyone feels they hsve to love it. And ensured Morgan Freeman would forever be the weary voice of God in any film requiring the weary voice of God.
