Nick Drake - "5 leaves left"
Amon Duul II - "Phallus Dei"
and I prefer their glam albums (see also Obscure Alternatives) to the later stuff. I dun think AS would qualify as being 'best ever' good...but
I always think of this one reviewer (twat!) who claimed Japan were one of the worst bands ever... I think it was Robert Hilburn, the old LA Times music guy. Hilburn also said Modern Love was one of Bowie's best songs...it was then I canceled my subscription.

Boards of Canada - Music has the Right To Children
Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol 1
Psyopus - Ideas of Reference
Has to be REM- MURMUR. no other album so weird or difficult to understand, yet totally relevant in terms of style and peter bucks understated guitar playing. paved the way for many bands in the 90's
this album absolutely shit on most indie bands out at the time and has been copied so many times by the nu-rave kids. i wish id came up with their idea, but MSTRKRFT carry it on i suppose. never a band put such a stamp on their sound. so glad they never did a second....

I saw them live early on, when they dressed like the New York Dolls.
They were supporting Jim Capaldi (drummer from Traffic) !
