There's just no stopping her. She was completely solo (for the first time I can remember in ages), but the Ys stuff was just as arresting, and her new material, most of which was on the piano, was really promising. Her voice is more prominent, more confident, and there's a bit more of a personal tone to it, albeit behind her usual literary veil.
She the queen.
STOP MAKING ME JEALOUS.
Why do so many people spell 'Newsom' wrong?
I think I prefer her solo to be honest. How was the volume? Gigs I've been to at Somerset House have often been too quiet.
Not loud enough
to drown out the Somerset House bells every quarter-hour. Nor the seagulls, nor the jet that flew over, nor the billowing wind. But the crowd shut the fuck up pretty smartish, at least those within 20 yards of the stage, so not bother.
In short, it was harp loud, but the crowd was rapt.
I need a new joanna Newsome album in my life
badly
was so so good
to hold such a crowd so completely rapt for an hour and a half with just a harp and a piano, just amazing.
cosmia was my highlight but wow it was all so wonderful.
i love her.
Saw her earlier today at Latitude
She was amazing. I've never heard a festival crowd so silent in rapt attention. She completely forgot the words to Sawdust and Diamonds but was so sweet and bashful about it no one cared at all. Let it be known I wish to make her my bride!
bugger!
She mentioned that she forgot the words to one of her songs at Latitude. Consequently she didn't play Sawdust & Diamonds at Somerset. I was gutted as I was really looking forward to hearing it. :(
Peach Plum Pear and Cosmia were my two highlights, though. Absolutely stunning stuff, I'm so glad I got to see her purely solo, it was perfect.
Damn you Somerset House bells!
it was good
cold, blustery sound at points, people speaking near me and the sound being generally very low but it was bloody good. i did a little cry during it.
new songs were brilliant
really nice overall.
Cold and blustery but she did all she could to make me forget that and fidgit less. She's pretty much the sweetest person in the world
I preferred her with an orchestra though.
i would have liked
to have met you. oh well.
I was with joeymahone
shame I didn't see you
i thought you would be
for some reason. i was looking out for him/doctornovocalcords but didn't spot them, unfortunately. next time :)
:(
i really wanted to go to this. i saw her at the sage in gateshead last year and it was the best gig i have ever been too. she is amazing. just listened to one of the new songs on youtube and it does sound brilliant.

.
how were the red krayola?
pretty rubbish to be honest
Newsome was fantastic, the sound was great, her vocals were mesmerising and the sound of the harp bouncing off the walls off such a beautiful building as a lone bird swooped across the courtyard was something else.
It was good innit.
she was amazing
the concert was slightly marred for me by the presence of a 'music journalist' next to me ostentatiously scribbling on his pad and talking loudly throughout to his Leigh Bowery lookalike 'photographer' friend. Reading over his shoulder I saw amongst other gems he'd written 'annoyingly childlike'. Fuck OFF. Big yay to the girl who told him shut up and do exactly that halfway through (and he did).
laura veirs is best
.
I was pretty underwhelmed to be honest
she made kept making mistakes, the timing of her singing was abit more awkward than usual, like on her first eps. It was by no means bad but nowhere near as good as previous times i've seen her. I was really looking forward to it as well, I prefer her solo but it didn't have the specialness I was expecting. Didn't like the new piano songs at all, especially the first one, disapointed there was no sawdust and diamonds but sadie made up for it. It pains me to be this negative about joanna newsom
slight exaggeration
she made about two mistakes, both on piano I think.
Anyone got the setlist?
she made shedload of mistakes
Indeed
Especially in Colleen, although that must be insanely difficult to play.
New piano numbers were disappointing; it seemed that as soon as she sat behind the piano her melodies became so much more standard. I swear the second new piano one she played had some fucking twelve bar blues in it too.
I only noticed a couple of mistakes
Agreed on the piano stuff. Whilst it was good it just felt fairly conventional whereas her voice and harp playing are meant to go together
Yeah it wasn't especially bad
Just a bit meh. I think shoving all the piano numbers together in the middle of the set probably counted against her too. It might have sounded better between Cosmia and Peach, Pear...
this is true
bless her, but she made a mistake or three on pretty much every song
I can only imagine how hard it must be to play harp and sing at the same time though
other times i've seen her she has been flawless
maybe in the past the backing band makes it harder to notice or gives her more confidence, or maybe it was the two performances in a day. Still a bellow average joanna newsom show is still better than most other gigs.
She's shit
she sounds like a spoilt horrible little child with several frogs in it's throat.
you're shit
Take your controversy seeking "look at me" comments...
and shove them up your arse.
you're shit
cheers
Not the best i've seen her
but still really awesome. Cosmia, Peach Plum, Pear and the second new one on piano were Highlights for me. Wasn't nearly loud enough which made it hard to absorb yourself, crowd was very respectful though. Saw lots of people leave before the end which was beyond me.
Barbican with London Philamonic will be tough to beat.
*London Symphony Orchestra
I thought it was amazing.
First time I'd seen her - it was really nice to hear all of the songs solo as well.
so jealous!
I happened to be in Australia when she played the Opera House. it was incredible. wish i had seen her again :(
Great venue and sound
but I had an altercation with the bar staff. they didnt do tapwater so i had to buy a mineral water in a bottle. Fine, but the girl took off the lid and wouldn't give it to me. I was like "what if i want to drink just a bit and put it in my bag?" She just smiled, shrugged and rolled her eyes towards her colleagues, the way you do to a madman. Thanks.
seems fair enough
they take lids off because throwing a bottle with a lid on can hurt someone
which makes sense
but surely they can see what the crowd is like at a Joanna Newsome gig
I think the Joanna Newsom
crowd was tarred with the brush of the Fratellis crowd. Same rules for everyone - the bag searches did seem excessive last night.
She was spellbinding at Latitude
She did forget the words during Sawdust and Diamonds though, which seemed to throw her quite a bit- maybe she was still feeling that at the Somerset House show?
Don't think so.
She was very relaxed and funny.
i'm a loser
I saw her play at latitude then left early to see her play somerset house. what a loser.
worth it?
