it started with a mixx (first mixtape-centric)

my first mixtape was from a girl i really liked. she gave me it on new years eve 05/06, then we held hands and i spent the next day listening to it. i made her one, and no other mix making experience to date has topped it.

your turn! i will also allow cds and other mixes that have a good story.

  • i used to make mixtapes for myself to listen to on my portable cassette player,

    nobody's ever made me one.
    same goes for mixed cds.

    • lulz

you post very tragic things sometimes

      • it's true though.

        • no indie boys in newcastle??

          just the toon army?

          • no indie boiz that have ever taken an interest in me,

well, where i live there aren't any anyway.

            • : (((((

            • maybe they haven't noticed

that you look a bit like alice glass??

              • even they noticed,

crystal castles wouldn't be the best starting point for conversation. i've never had a conversation with anyone irl about sonic youth, or riot grrrl, or anything else that i listen to. but i know that i wouldn't be good at it.

            • they're probably scared off

              by your horrendous depressing personality

              • ^5

i'm not the only one who hates myself y'know, this isn't a persona. feel free to join the 'i hate georgiabeth' club. we always welcome new members.

                • my chemical romance shaved my wife!

                  • :D

                    I'M REALLY EMO, AREN'T I?

                    • yes?

                      • :'(

i'm so emo i'm watching big brother right now.

                        • that's nothing

I'm playing WoW. You are but a blip on the lameness radar.

                          • but i have no friends, don't socialise

and spend most of my time organising things!
                            is that emo?

                          • plz don't be joking about warcraft

                            • i'm not

level 70 is within my grasp

                              • srsly??

how long did that take? my friend at uni apparently sacrifaced a year of going out to "raid"

                                • a few months

                                  that's sick. really gross. even i won't do that when i'm 70

                                  • is raiding frowned upon?

he couldn't go out cos he'd let his WoW crew down!!!

                                    • raiding's fun

but it'd be fucking draining to do it every night. they take at least four hours!

    • that needs to be rectified.

      :(

      • :(

        • i could perhaps make you one

my mix skills have probably come on a fair bit since i made the aforementioned tape. there's sometimes a DiS mixtape swap too, one is probably due soon.

  • my girlfriend made me my first one

and i make them for her all the time. incidentally, i instigated conversation with her at school 4 years ago by copying fever to tell, the master ep and the machine ep to a cd and giving it to her. that's like a mixtape

    • it's pretty much

the best approach to wooing. nice work.

  • when i was 14 a boy made me a mixtape

and then asked me out and i said yes. i remember it having Mclusky, Sonic Youth, and the Fall maybe.

  • i think

i recorded the chart on the radio, then re-recorded my favourite songs (double tape deck ftw) on another tape with my radio DJ presenting between the songs. Contained "Don't Stop (Wiggle Wiggle)" by the Outhere Brothers

    • <3

I think I actually have that on tape/single somewhere. (Not you doing the DJ presenting, but that outhere brothers track.)

    • :D

home made radio shows were amazzzing.

    • ^this pretty much

it was proper awesome, my first 'serious' mix cd I made for a friend as my attempt at describing what music I was into failed pretty hard when they didn't recognise any of the bands I was talking about, so i thought rather than use my poor vocabularly to describe them I'd just make a mix cd.

  • I think mine was for one of my friends

and it was a compilation of most of the fatwreck/epitaph bands that were around at the time.

I can't remember the first one I received...I think it was a load of comedy songs someone in my IT class had burnt to disc and handed out. Not very romantic.

Nearly all the mixes I've received since then have actually been from the DiS mixtape swaps, so thanks people!

I made quite a few for my ex.

    • The first mixtape I ever received from a would be suitor

      had JJ72 on it.

I didn't like them then, and I still don't now.

  • you want this

David Quantick Radio4 documentary on the disappearing art of the mixtape
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00cj8d8

    tis good

    • tis alright

      • well

it's not THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD EVER OMG!!11!!!1

but it's quite good - better than alright
        not enough music though p'raps

  • Mixtapes are rad

The last one I made I was really proud of (and was pretty well-recieved too)- lots of great shouty pop songs for the girl who most of the recent events of my life have revolved in some way around. I always like doing hand-drawn artwork for them too... mixtapes are fun. I need something to do this evening beyond writing a review of the Harvey Milk album, anyone want one?

    • yes!

      • Will do!

      • he's not gonna put any avril lavigne on it

        itll be rubbish

    • will you make me a mixtape with avril lavigne on it

      • I don't own any Avril Lavigne

        so I guess not, no.

        • wouldnt it shatter yr veneer of indie cool

if you admitted you liked avril lavigne

          • i don't like Avril Lavigne, but

i thought she was hilarious when she came out and dressed up as her for school one day to be funny but i backfired. Everyone was like "you suit that look, you should wear ties and carry a skateboard more often," and people still think i was an Avril obsessive.

            • it*

            • people just dont get it sometimes, huh

              :(

    • I bet you make wicked tapes

I'm not hot enough to warrent one mind hehehe.

      Make one for someone prettyer.

      SWAC x

  • my first mix tape

was no doubt made when I was very very young. I use to record songs off the radio and then get a lil microphone and speak shit inbetween like it was an acctual radio show but for toddlers, then record another tune off the radio. I was very young indeed...

    • I did this too!

I made up wee news stories as well.

Then I'd sit and listen to it, ha ha.

      • hahah

        I wish I still had them :(

no idea what happend to the recordings I probibly just went over them again and again. But I remember doing them vidly :)

        • I think I just had one or two tapes, so recorded over them repeatedly

          until they was knackered.

I also remember recording myself reading my books aloud and then listening to them.

  • I've never been given a mix tape!

    Or a mix CD. :(

    • this also needs rectifying.

    • someone sort this out

    • good golly

I can send you digital ones right now. Or pm me your adress hehehe

  • never had one, never made one

but I'm not a girl so I doubt anyone will want to rectify me.

  • I don't remember.

Something shit from a friend; that's what almost all mixtapes I've ever received have been. I've never received one in a romantic way. And I've never recieved one that I've really, really loved, though I did get a good mp3-only mixtape from a DiSer once, and a hard copy one from a DiSer once that I just unpacked the other day and am quite fond of, even though I don't really, really love all the music on it.

    • My friend made me a mixtape when I was about 10

that I used to play in my Aunt's car. She still has it.

Her favourite song was "Love to hate you" by Erasure which cut out after about 2 mins...

That's my aunt's musical education right there.

  • i've never got a properly romantic one

but I got quite a flirty one last month from someone really nice (before we went on a date).

sadly, a mixtape full of shared old memories would have pretty cheesy/joke music like cliff richard, elton john, and cheap trick (the last two are awesome)

  • I did a Jimi Hendrix

mixtape swap in primary school too.

  • I got a great one recently!

It introduced me to Turbonegro and made me fancy it's creator that little bit more!

The last one I made had some dark themes on it but also featured a track called 'Brilliantly Cute' which is not only ace but also a title fitting of it's recipient! :)

    • woo hoo

let's hear it for Norweigian cock rock! Gets 'em every time!

  • I'd made

three or four for girls I've fancied in the past, of which I think two made their way to their intended recipients. Neither came to anything, and infact one stood me up for a 'date' :(

BUT! My now-girlfriend made me one as part of my 18th birthday present. We're in love now :)
