I'm looking for a song (songs would be good, but 1 corker will do) that reveals more and more with repeated listens. Music that is carefully considered and tactfully excecuted.
One of the best examples of this I have is The National's "Fake Empire" - there's the building trombone melody in the fanfare at the end, the tiny little guitar echoes with the bass drum intro, and the little bit where the hi-hat stutters as the snares are hit before chugging on. I hope you get what I mean... I think everyone probably has a song they could listen to until the end of time and not get bored of it. That's the song you should post here. GO!
Hmm
I suppose my best example is Emily by Joanna Newsom. I can't imagine ever getting bored of hearing that.
Also: Fake Empire is close to being my favourite National song. Daughters of the Soho Riots just pips it though.
Tonto by Battles
Every day a new layer of OMG unfolds.
Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones
HAY, HAY-AY........ IT'S JUST A SHOT AWAAAAAAAAYYYYY
i suppose its not that subtle
but the more i hear it, the more it gets me
If you like The Rolling Stones 'Gimme Shelter'
you'll love this....

It's only the master tapes of said aong. Cheers!
Modest Mouse - Stars Are Projectors
Fireworks by Animal Collective
i've listened to it so so many many many times and still it sounds euphoric and amazing and like i'm only hearing it for the first time. and still it's probably not even my favourite song of theirs :)
Agreed.
It really is awesome. The "eeeeeeyeeeey-eeeeyeee" singing bit rules :) Love it how the rhythm changes for the second half of the song too
The Ballad of Cable Hogue by Calexico
It's like a Western in 3 minutes, with trumpets and a bit in French that only serves to magnify its general tremendousness eightfold.
I also wholeheartedly agree on Fake Empire - it's possible I just have a thing about funky trumpet parts in popular music.
Fuck Buttons - Bright Tomorrow
amazing.
or even
Mogwai - Summer
Radiohead - All I Need.
agreed
the more i hear that the more it mesmerizes (sp?) me. incredible song
Also Weird Fishes
^yess
En Papier by These New Puritans
Really though, for me the whole album just gets better and deeper with every listen - it's certainly the best British debut album of the year for me, and only Fleet Foxes really stands up to it internationally.
Pancake
by The Swirlies
oh and Jeremy Parker
by the same band
Also,
Reasons for choices would be awesome :)
Bon Iver
"Skinny Love"
I was going to suggest that as well
I'm obsessed with this song at the moment.
How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?
by the Very Reverend Green. Makes me greet like a baby more and more each time.
Brand new
anything from "the devil and god are raging inside me" album
Brainy
by The National.
^This
Handcuffs, especially.
for me
it's Waves of Grain by Two Gallants
or Flume by Bon Iver for me.
Loads and Loads od Neil Yound
probably the entire of Tonight's the Night, so many great moments, lyrically and musically. Took me many listens to fully appreciate it all.
See Alfie - Do You Imagine Things for great little psychadelic moments, and of course Beatles - Abbey Road for some of the best backing vocals and incredible lead guitar lines ever.
broken social scene
handjobs for the holidays. must have listened to this 20 times before its true majesty revealed itself
Phosphorescent - Wolves
Also, Phosphorescent Wolves > Bon Iver Wolves.
Forest Fire - Lloyd Cole
that is EXACTLY what you are after Sir.
Bad Timing - dEUS
I listen to this song every day.
"...and I didn't even tryyyyyyyyyYYYYYYYYYY!!!!"
But 'Gimme The Heat' has more of the slow-release that you speak of and is one of the greatest songs ever IMO.
I also second Fake Empire, Skinny Love.
Sparklehorse- Cow
I'd love to see the score for it.
You have described my favourite music. I quickly tire of a song when I've 'learnt' it.
'Destroyer's Runies'
off Rubies by, um, Destroyer. But almost anything on that album needs a couple of billions listens before it sticks...
*Rubies
Though Runies is funnier.
thanks chap(ette)s
I'm off to listen to this shizzle for a while now :) I shall resucitate the thread if and when anything catches!
Oh, and Sao Paulo by Guillemots is another of these songs.
