Similar voice, similar disjointed approach to songwriting etc.
I've met a few people here recently who all think Modest Mouse are miles better, but from what I've heard of Modest Mouse, I'd say that Built To Spill are miles better - just more interesting.
Is this simply a case of me not listening to enough Modest Mouse, and them not listening to enough Built To Spill, and they are actually more or less as good as each other?

but then I've never given repeated listens to much Modest Mouse, just been played their albums by my mates.
So I wonder how many replies are going to be "definitely Built To Spill" when they person hasn't heard much Modest Mouse, or the other way round?

probably MM if i had to choose though.
i've listened a lot to both bands,
and i rate MM as "brilliant" and BTS as "pretty good". especially so when considering their early output.
i just love that jangly, raunchy sound of MM; isaac's incredible lyrics and simple but efficient guitar parts coupled with jeremiah's drumming, is a killer combo. i find large chunks of BTS albums to contain a tad too much guitar wankery for my taste. cool if you dig extended guitar solos, but i get my fix of that with dino jr.

Never understood the comparisons at all
Aside from them both playing together here at a fairly key time in their career I just dont hear it. Anyway, I would say:
On record MM, just shade it as i like that they are a bit more aggressive.
Live its BTS all the way.

I think Modest Mouse are far more dinamic and original in their songwriting, at least in their hay day, It's mainly the drumming in Modest Mouse that edges it for them, Jermiah was one of the best drummers of the 90s.
Although, Built To Spills latest output trumps Modest Mouses... but I will stick by the fact that everything Modest Mouse did in the 90s was better (except for Fruit That Ate It's Self) then any of Built To Spills output... the naughties... its more in the favour of Built To Spill

BTS have released a weak record or two though
and I have def seen them be shit live once so its hard to hold them up as perfect.
Yeah, both good bands
But MM are just so much better - every Built to Spill album goes on for far too long and contains some dull songs, whereas The Moon & Antartica is an absolute masterpiece. Don't get all the hate for the new MM stuff though - Good News was pretty patchy, sure, but We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank hasn't got a weak track on it (hell, it'd probably be my favourite if they hadn't already done TM&A). Just because they can afford decent recording studios now...

Keep It Like a Secret is one of my favourite records ever.
Modest Mouse had their moments on a couple of albums, but nowhere near as consistent.

I know that I did. They used to support BTS a lot in the 90's and Doug always used to yap on about them. I really like them both but lyrically BTS are better.

Heartbreaking, soaring and other wanky words. His voice is incredible. I love both bands but BtS are way better live.
MM live have such a weird sound, everything tinny except the bass. No middle or something.
