Regina: Music for girls?

Several of my friends/acquaintances (by which I mean, at least 2) have said that they don't like Regina Spektor because it's girly music (and they themselves are guys).

This raises a few questions:
1. Do you agree with that statement, and why (not)?
2. What determines if something is music for girls?
3. Would anyone ever label something as specifically being manly music?

  • 1. not really

the later stuff which is excessively cute is too girly, but 11:11 and songs are pretty dark, and amazing. and soviet kitsch is too good to be written off as girly

    2. cute lyrics, singing about periods

    3. SLAYER

  • I agree

because you also like Bright Eyes and Bright Eyes is definitely music for girls. So basically, if you or guntrip like something, then it is music for girls.

    • i liked those songs you sent me

by that guy whose name i can't remember right now.

      YOU LISTEN TO GIRLY MUSIC.

      • Elliott Smith?

        Yeah, Elliott Smith's pretty girly.

        • that's the one

so you don't actually mind girly music (and with you being a boy and all, that does kind of prove that it's not actually exclusively for girls), you just wanted to leave some stupid comment about bright eyes because you for some reason which is completely beyond me is unable to appreciate them? ok.

        • I wouldn't really call Elliott girly

how fucking amazing is the guitar solo on strung out again?! I will never get bored of hearing that.

          • amazing = not girly?

IS THAT WHAT YOU'RE SAYING? WATCH IT MAN

            • no

those two statements are seperate ol' buddy ol' pal.

              • i was only joking, btw :(

                • I know

but I wanted to clarify anyway (bigger :( )

                  • and they say the music board is a scary place!

                    • only if you talk about things other people don't like

which must be just about everything.

  • I like her she has some good stuff

and I was a bloke last tiem I checked....

    .... yep still am.

I'm not sure what girly music is but I would think that some blokes just say that something is girly just because they dont like it.

cock rock is quite mannly as it does have a cock in the title.

  • UH

i can't condense my thoughts on this into a drowned in sound forum comment. can i get back to you with an essay????

    but, basically:

    1. no
    2. nothing of substance
    3. people do, all the time

  • Super prog

    is probably manly music.

Regina Spektor is pretty boring though she has an interesting voice. I don't understand the hubbub about her though.

    • first three albums were AMAZING

when i got them i listened to slayer and gorgoroth all the time, now i listen to girly music as well as slayer and gorgoroth.

      • first three

being 11:11, songs and soviet kitsch?

begin to hope is seriously an amazing album. yes, the singles are too poppy for many hardcore regina fans' liking, but some of the songs on that album are so amazing i don't even have the words to express it (see: 20 years of snow, apres moi, etc)

  • My very annoyed answers

    1. No I do not bloody agree. It is emotional music, sure. But anyone who thinks any music with emotion is for girls only is a complete wanker.

    2. I only consider music like Spice Girls and stuff that exclusively markets itself as 'For Girls' as girly music.

    3. I suppose some people might, but they'd be bloody wrong about that too.

    • there's a difference between 'manly' and 'only men listen to it'

surely you would have to say there is music that possess the characteristics of masculinity?

      • please quantify masculinity

        thanks

        • james hetfield

          • james hetfield

definitly a girl writing for girlzzzzzzzzzzzz. Regina Spektor kicks his ass sideways. Sorry whiterussian, I couldn't resist that.

        • 16

        • I cannot quantify

but I will qualify as best I can.

Containing characterstics typical of the male sex; aggression (not necessarily a bad thing), sharp focus on small details, technically competative prowess.

who knows what a man is?

          • i would say

aggression, sharp focus on small details and technically competitive prowess were pretty stereotypical understandings of masculinity.

            • are you agreeing?

Remember that masculinity and femininity are not mutually exclusive.

              • im not agreeing, im saying those things are stereotypical and inaccurate

masculinity and femininity are certainly not mutually exclusive.

[hi i did my dissertation on gender binaries so don't tell me to "remember" lol]

                • sorry

saying remember in that context sounds patronising. I just realised. I think you would have to concede that stereotypes are generalisations or at least cultural generalisations, meaning they will be true in many cases. Being a man I would say I consider myself aggressive, narrowly focussed, and competative at times. I can't think of many feminine women who are interested in prog-rock.

      • I think possibly what they mean is that Regina Spector is kinda girly, but more importantly, not ver

I can back this statement up because I have listened to Spector over and over again throuhg my sister's roatation of her on her cd player.

  • ghost of corporate future = too girly

    daniel cowman = too awesome

  • Loads of girls I know

do like Regina with a passion that seems to transcend their love for other artists. But then again I know plenty of guys who are obsessed with her as well (although I'm sure physical attraction has at least something to do with it).

    And I think she's great.

  • As far as Girlie rock goes:

I like Rasputina. I have only previewed Regina in the shop but never bought any cause (like anything I pass on) she just didn't grab me but I have always been ready for a woman to lead me anywhere- just gotta be the right woman.

    • i would

be more than happy to send you some of her songs, if you want me to.

      • Pat Cronin

        P.O. Box 1792

        Red Lodge, Montana

        59068

        USA

        : )

        • it's a shame

we don't have something like, oh say the internet to send stuff quickly, eh

          • I is a dile up dork - can't download or upload big files.

I live in the jungle and can't see making a $2,500 hardware investment just for a crappy satellite connection. The man keeps telling us that he'll have the fiber optic wire out to us but after five years; we are still waiting.

            : (

Not to worry though, don't trouble yourself.

  • The only people I know

who listen to Regina are girls.

I form my opinion from that.

    • so

you haven't tried actually listening to her or anything crazy like that?

  • i love regina spektor

and all that girly shit. it's only because i'm a massive gayist. or is it just so i can impress girls by liking 'their' music? or do i genuinely like the music?

    • you genuinely like it.

      REALLY.

      • only this morning i found my old 7" of 'Us'

true fact. it's over there somewhere. >

        • i think "us"

is possibly the most overrated track she has ever done. it's nice and all, but really, it's not THAT great.

          • i mean

compared to the rest of the album/her songs in general.

          • ^WRONG

            • compare it to

Flowers, Sailor Song, Ode To Divorce, etc and it will come out as the weaker track. It's a good song, by all means, I just don't think it's as amazing as some people would have it.

              • i just think it's so much more majestic than her other stuff

like an outpouring of something or other...i love it.

                • oh well

maybe i am just missing something

OH RIGHT, it's a couply song.

                  • it's nothing to do with that!

i was never one to have 'our song' with a couple. ew. anyway...

              • Us is great but it certainly isn't her best song

However if you'd said Aquarius, Loveology, Back of a Truck I would agree MORE.

                • i didn't really "get" aquarius, to be honest with you

                • My favourite song is from 'Begin To Hope'

                  I'm not even remotely indie.

It's 'Apres Moi', by the way.

Love Affair from 11:11 is a close second though.

                  • begin to hope

as a whole is one of the best albums i own. it does have songs i'm not crazy about (hotel song...) but the album just works so well

                  • I love Begin To Hope as much as the next guy

Apart from Edit. That's rubbish. But I don't really make a massive distinction between the "poppy" and "less poppy" and "quirky" etc. 'S all good as they say.

20 years of snow, summer in the city, apres-moi, lady, field below are the best ones though.

                    • Not so keen on Summer In The City

but my Regina Spektor playlist (see below...in a minute) consists of lots of Begin To Hope stuff, 'specially considering I have the super special edition version <3

                      • what's extra on the special edition version?

                      • how can you guys

not like edit and summer in the city?

                        you're both INSANE

  • ...

    WAY TOO FUCKING EASY.

  • reet

    1) No.
    2) Twats.
    3) Death metal?

    • i should have used another word

than "manly". Cause even if death metal might be considered manly music, there are certainly enough girls/women who listen to it as well.

      • girls/woman and

boys/men are stupid. When are we going to get replaced by robots with identical taste?!

      • yer but there are plenty of men

        who listen to regina too.
aren't there generally more men making music in most genres than there are women? therefore, you're more likely to get men making music 'for girls' (men with hair gel and pianos, boybands) than you are to get women making music 'for blokes'. i don't know what my point is here.

  • there was a sticker saying 'one for the lads'

on a RATM album I bought a while back. :(

    • also on Fratellis, Editors, Kasabian

ugh. And I haven't noticed this with CDs, but a lot of "chick flicks" have started appearing with flourescent pink boxes...

  • I LOVE Regina

I'm male, straight, and not in the least bit ashamed of this fact. So no, it isn't neccesarily girly music, just music that has a higher proportion of female fans than some other bands/artists.

  • As another straight, male Regina Spektor fan

I've been so obsessed with her music for so long I've made loads of mix cd's of her music to give to various people. Here's the tracklist of the ultimate best one.

    1.) On The Radio
2.) Baby Jesus (live version on limewire somewhere)
    3.) Ode To Divorce
    4.) Fidelity
    5.) Samson
    6.) Love Affair
    7.) Sailor Song
    8.) Apres Moi
9.) The Call (from 'Prince Caspian' soundtrack)
    10.) Hero
    11.) Us
    12.) Somedays

    God I love that mix.

    • Nice Mix

But The Call is rubbish, and there's no Carbon Monoxide. Which is a shame.

      • I know The Call is a bit rubbish

But it's been the only new Regina Spektor material in AGES, so it has to go on there.

        • Am I the only person that really likes The Call?

Sure, it's a bit overblown and sentimental but, to be fair, it is soundtracking a Disney film, and it does its job rather well.

  • my girlfriend hates converge

i dont know any girls that like converge or black flag, but i'm pretty sure they're out there.
