So moving to Oxford in Sept/have a proper job/know very little about the place
What is there to do in the week (evenings)
What is there to do on Friday nights?
What is there to do if you like music?
Where is a good pub for a swift pint?
Where is a good place to visit on a weekend?
Any good shops to buy some clothes?
What is there to do in East Oxford? (thats where my abode is)
Are there any good club nights?
..Does anyone here still live in Oxford?
thats all i need to know.
Where are you working?
1/2. - Check out www.dailyinfo.co.uk
3. Academy, Brooke's Union, Cellar, Jericho Tavern put on bands of varying sizes.
4. Duke, Star, Turf Tavern
5. Blenheim/Cotswolds/London
6. Pass, only know girls stuff
7. Er, nothing its all residential. Lots of stabby pubs - where abouts will you be?
Im Working in a place called Botley.
Its west Oxford as far as i know,
Does Howard Rd ring any bells? its East Oxford, the area looks a little shabby but the house is nice
Jericho Tavern looks good. I need live music and bands to keep me going
Yeah Howard Road is between
Iffley and Cowley at the top of Cowley road - bit of a nightmare for parking but great location in terms of nightlife. You'll have every kebab shop and Indian restaurant you could possibly need on your doorstep.
yum then sick
Ill look forward to the walk home past greasy paper and sliced meat in a haze.
Is there a substantial shopping area for clothes/and bits and bobs?
Howard Street?
that's where I live. Iffley Road end is nicer, Cowley Road end has prostitutes at night.
I've never seen any
:(
ill have a look out
prossy spotting ftw!
pint in september anyone?
Practically every pub in Oxford is great
As well as those mentioned, the cricketers, the the fir tree and the white horse are lovely.
The cellar was my favourite club/gig venue by a mile. Varied nights put on by people who love their music.
And East Oxford is soulful. It's not far from the grandeur of the city centre but has a much nicer community feel.
There is quite a healthy music scene there. Only downside is practically all the record shops have closed down.
You will love it.
is there any independant record stores still going?
Bristol has none and miss this aspect of weekends
.
Not a single one
we did
have some. but then they all closed in the last year or so. :(
Yay.
It's a bit dead at the moment to be truthful.
1. Go to the Ultimate Picture Palace?
2. Not much. Shake at the Academy can be bearable... but aint great.
3. Go to the Wheatsheaf, Jericho Tavern, Port Mahon, The Cellar, Bullingdon back room and of course occasionally the Carling.
4. The Star
5. Stratford-upon-Avon, the cotswolds etc
6. Reign on Cowley road is great.
7. pass
8. You missed out on ARF? which was great fun, but I'm hoping someone starts another night like that soon. Narcissists on a Wednesday night will hopefully start up again in september, an indie schmindie club night. Always good fun.
9. I live in Oxford. :)
Hooray for East Oxford
1. Lots of good little nights, The Cellar on a Thursday, Baby Love on Wednesdays, half-decent electro nights most nights.
2. Not a lot actually.
3. Loads - check out Nightshift, the local fanzine. Really good music scnee really.
4. Loads of great pubs in East Oxford (Hobgoblin, James Street Tavern, Fir Tree and The Star are my favourites), Three Goats Heads in city centre is an awesome Sam Smiths pub as well
5. London - say YES to a 24 hour coach service.
6. Usual array of high street stuff, loads of charity shops, and Unicorn, a random hive of quirky-cool miscellany in a tiny shop off the main shopping street, run by a vaguely demented old woman who smells funny and arbitrarily prices things according to how much she likes the look of you.
7. Absolutely loads, ridiculous amount of good places to eat and drink, Ultimate Picture Palace (great indie cinema), The Zodiac... Has a reputation for being unsafe (by Oxford standards) but I never had any problems.
8. See above. But I always had a soft spot for the gigantic commercial indie-fest of The Zodiac on a Saturday night. Narcissists is probably the best night in the city though.
9. I don't live there anymore, but I kind of wish I did.
oxford is lovely...!
lots of super bars!
xxx
and hardly any poor people
yay
LIES
I did debt collecting driving in oxford. It's got quite a developed underbelly.
Incidentally - when your temping agency tells you they have some driving work to do in the 2 week factory downtime, and are quite sketchy about the precise details, don't do it. You'll be in danger of losing your soul. I did meet some pretty odd chaps though. Jimmy the Greek was my favourite.
I was being "satirical"
It is a bizarre place though.
I "guessed"
it's better than redditch though. Redditch is like the shit bit of oxford, without any of the vaguely nice stuff.
is reditch N E S or W of the centre
im in the east
sorry man, i got confusing
Redditch is a shithole of a town about 60 miles NW of oxford (just south of birmingham).
Don't worry, you don't need to go there.
EVER.
your favourite bar/pub?
i want a nice mid price pint (ill be working full time) and the chance to see some live music during the week,,,,do you know of such place?
port mahon?
jericho tavern has a lot more gigs now, they started just as i left jericho!
i don't know if the wheatsheaf is still going but taking a small handheld fan and your own ice if you go upstairs to the gig venue. it's hotter than the sun. even russian circles refused to carry on playing in the heat... and they are strong, hard men.
that sounds literal but i didn't mean it
don't take a handheld fan you'll look like a clown.
*puts fan and sombrero away*
