Mainstream music I mean, it's all so bland? Wactghing Glastonbury and now T in the park, it's a festering pool of nothing.
A wave of crass endeavour without a spark of inspiration.

The ting tings, Kt Tunstal, the fratellis, the stereophinics, the verve, newton faulkner ; how and why?

:(

this is surely a 'man maries goat'

situation.

also, i dont care how boring KT Tunstall's music is because she is just about the cutest woman i have ever seen

But, if you were at TITP you might also be enjoying.....

dEUS, Fucked Up, Jaguar Love, British Sea Power, The Hold Steady, Band of Horses, Battles, Seasick Steve, Fighting With Wire, Johnny Foreigner........

Nobody is forced to stand in front of the mainstage for 3 days, but if they do and they're enjoying themselves, so what?

why are those bands not on the main stage

why is it not possible to elevate it above songs to get pissed to on the main stages?

Simply because

your music taste is in the minority...

accept it.

You're using the Verve and the Stereophonics

in a rant about how bands are only now worse?

Im using them in a "why

are we re-visitng the stupified corpse" of bands that were never good in the first place and having them haedline festivals.

Maybe Its Not That The Mainsteam Is Worse

Just the "alternative" is better?

yes

i think it is, the jeans are getting tighter and the musics getting shitter

I think it boils down to the fact that........

the audience profile at festivals has changed enormously.

When I first started going to festivals in 1994 it was dreadlocks, multiple facial piercings, purple hair, full sleeve tattoos and people who were really, really into music. Hence you had the likes of dEUS, Smashing Pumpkins (y'know, when they were still good), Pavement, Teenage Fanclub, Mudhoney, etc at the top of the bill and populating the mainstage rather than the more obscure auxiliary stages.

Fast forward to 2008 and you've got people who just want to have a laugh in a fiel with their mates (and there's not much wrong with that), thirty something middle class couples from Putney who read about how festivals are the in thing in the Sunday Times Style supplement plus hordes of 16 year old 'I'm an indie' types who are too young to remember the days when the NME didn't just focus on terrible ladrock.

Obviously, as the audience profile has changed so have the line-ups.

There's still plenty of good music, it's
just that you have to look ever so slightly harder to find it.

You are defo rigth about the Times readers

Loads of people who i know who weren't even bothered about music in general a few years ago are suddenly patting themselves on the backs they are all going to a festival. Like you said they'd spotted a really flashy advert in a supliment and read "it's a right old knees up" so decided not to go to the south of France this year and to slum it with ppl in tis country. Har har *snort.

Generally festivals have got more commercial with sponsors, shit beer and pack in as many vagrants ans pick pockets as they can.

Im a miserable 26 yr old who hates festivals as you can tell.

You've heard Adam and Joe's Song Wars right?

Because the Festival Song seems to sum up what you are all saying.

I'm 22 and haven't been to a festival yet because I don't want to be surrounded by people who are only there because it's cool, and have no interest in finding new music.

Although I am going to force myself to go to one somewhere next year...and will more than likely avoid the main stage...is that a good idea?

No, its exactly the same as it has always been

Shit bands have always existed, always will. If anything I think mainstream pop is much better than it has ever been. The problem is that there are more shit indie bands than there used to be as it used to be just to the side of mainstream and now indie is as mainstram as you can get.

Nothing wrong with that, i reckon the percentage of good to shit bands is still the same as it has ever been.

Oh and the best fesitval song you will ever here

is Just Another Sunday by the Winter Olympic, which can be found here (mini-jag, but it isnt me, just friends - one of whom posts on here)
