Why do some people hate the French so much? That whole, freedom fries, surrender monkeys thing. So many Americans (but not just them) going on about how the French are weak and cowardly..

:(

^^ most french thing ever

Don't worry

it's balanced out by the indie love for france. The scales.

france <3

the french

are probably more anti-american. sarkozy was the first president to properly acknowledge and thank them for liberating their country.

well that takes care of the yanks somewhat

but not really.

what about everyone else? and seriously? weak? isn't that just mean?

i blame Napoleon

The French might point out though

that without them, the USA might not have achieved independence to start with.

Exactly.

But Sarkozy thanking the yanks is necessary I think, since lots of vets are still alive to hear it.

Its these thanks/apologies for stuff beyond a hundred years ago that piss me off, like liberal plonkers feeling infinitely apologetic for slavery and colonialism.

I like the French and I like their country........

sure, they're rubbish in a fight, but they make up for it with their delicate pastries and excellent ski resorts.

i went to a house party yesterday

most of the people there were French except for one other english guy and a few greeks.

It was fun, and the food and wine there was amazing.

rudest people I've ever met

during a visit to Paris last year

...

I went a few years ago, and this was true.

...but then I went again last year and Paris was transformed into a beautiful city of lights, crammed with the most cheery, friendly, helpful people imaginable.

But then, it was Christmas.

I don't think I'll forget being heckled in a bar by some French lass for about an hour and a half. She was so drunk that in all that time she never quite got that I don't speak French...

well

I am a massive Francophile.

Though

French people can be very arrogant.

The only ruder people in general were Swedes.

This is from my vast life experience

I like France and the French.

As Alex-in-Ciderland said, they make good delicate pastries. They also make good art, good buildings, good cigarettes and good girls. Well done France.

Its all fun.

I don't think there's any genuine racial hatred there. Its just a conversation topic, isn't it? People ranting about THE FRENCH.

Or the SCOTS!

Or those bastards the WELSH!TROLLS,THE LOT OF 'EM!

Precisely!

I think the only genuine stupid hatred round these isles is from the Irish towards the English and protestants or whatever that silly little religious argument's all about.

I don't hate the Engilsh.

Nobody I know hates the English. There are some retards though.
For instance, down some dank alley in Cork, there is some vandalism saying "Brits out".I am not joking.

^

95% of people don't care.

Brits out of Cork?

Someone needs to inform them about the 1920s and quick!

:D

some of it is

some of it is genuine hatred. This often extends to the rest of europe. WE DON'T EVEN HAVE GUNS.

yeah French culture is fab

it may be the most indie country there is. If you know who my profile picture is, you get 5 indie points.
I think it's a love hate relationship with the French and it's more English than British.

Is it the

Mona Lisa?

good guess

It's Jean Cocteau

by Modigliani.

Too late :)

How is France 'the most indie country there is'?

Name me one French band that has broken through to an international stage of recognition in this decade so far.

And if you were a French indie kid, I'm pretty sure you'd rather live in England. Its not like you hear about bands doing French nationwide tours is it? And they can't exactly commute to gigs as we can, since their country is about 10 times bigger than ours.

that's her point

they're all obscure

nuh uh

i meant 'indie' people like French things, especially indie girls. Remember that controversial 'Why do all indie people love Japan??' thread?

Jean Cocteau

by Modigliani

woohoo!

do you want your indie points?

or would you rather have Nectar points?

I don't know what Nectar points are

save the indie points for someone who might need them

;)

I surrender

French people don't mind English people

They just wish the English would admit defeat to their superior and more beautiful language.
By the way, I have lived five years in France. Small town French people are pretty much the nicest people ever. I can make a nice fondue. Goodnight.

Nah, the problem is........

French lost the culture wars.

The British prevailed militarily paving the way for the anglosphere.

French resistance to learning English actually does them massive damage economically. They are literally the only country on earth that still contains a large core of people who won't accept that English is the dominant global language.

This coupled with childlike anti-Americanism is seriously fucking them over in the longterm.

As already stated, I like France, but they've got to let go of their past. After all, the Brits have and we had a hell of a lot more than they ever did.

French WAS the language of culture and politics

For a very long while- up until the end of the First World War.
It used to be the language of philosophical debate and good literature- many great literary works by foreign authors were first written in French.
It is a wonderful language and a fascinating culture- but you're right about their resistance to English. I could sit here talking for hours about how stagnant and narrow-minded French linguistic politics has been, and how utterly tenuous their grasp on reality is- but I won't, you already seem to know! It's very sad.

timing

shut up

i had other valuable contributions to make to this thread. this was what i initially thought upon seeing the title for the first time.

har har har

:@

:@ ewe o me too punts

I know!

Thanks!
I'll probably have a job so I can give you your money before I have to wear concrete boots and go for a walk in loch lomond

i don't.

but germans are better.

I'd support this statement.

The most underrated country in Europe by a long margin.

Germany is great

beautiful parks, sausages, beer... what more do you need?

I love Germany too

not that I've ever been or anything

not enough people rate kosovo as a country, huh

doesnt everyone like germany these days

Most Brits never go there........

they're happy to go to Calais to stock up on cheapbooze or decamp en masse to the Med for ham and eggs/binge drinking/ritual STD exchange in the sun, but are relatively unlikely to have been to Germany.

rly

sounds kinda 90s to me that, also home counties in part (see what you miss out on living in the north) i thought horizons had broadened a bit since then though, the ritual STD exchange seems to go on across europe, maybe not ham and eggs

I think the cult of holidays in the Med is UK wide.........

If anything it's more prevalent amongst Scottish/Northern types.

Do you know what the Home Counties are?

I'm not deliberately patronising you, but I've no idea how you reached that conclusion. The booze cruise phenomenon is more a Southern thing due to proximity to the channel ports.

...and I'm referring to a certain type of

holiday in the Med.

The 14 day drinkathon variety.

incredible

i think it's my favourite photograph ever

they kept tallies of how many 'shags' everyone got.

no i think he only got a couple

the girl behind him won with 10 in 14 days, but one of them was her boyfriend so i'm not sure if that counts.

sounds like trickery, huh

just the one with her boyfriend, hmmmm

yeah i was deliberately patronising you

sorry, home counties seemed a more catchy thing to say than 'the wall of corn' or 'places in close proximity to ports' or whatever, i hoped it would go unnoticed, my sincerest apologies

it was quite interesting living in spain to find that the whole costa del sol thing isnt as widely despised as you might expect, this may change now the old dears are forming a political party

because some people

will hate anything you tell them enough

we hate germans too

in spite of the fact that we technically wouldn't be the country we are if Germanic tribes hadn't come here yonks ago, kicking the withdrawing roman mandem

Is it simply the war that brought up this animosity?
When German's get constantly reminded of the holocaust it exasperates considering how widespread eugenicists were in lots of countries in the western civilized world.

btw i am not a nazi sympathizer (very much doubt they'd let me join)just pointing out the stupidity in this holier-than-thou attitude a lot of brits have to all countries; we've had it for america for quite a while now

It is often said that

The English love France, but hate the French
And the French love the English, but hate England.

This may or may not be true.

Triskaidekaphobia

(number thirteen is lucky in France)
