Is it wrong to collect records/CDs?

I was reading the EBAY thread and people were saying how much money they've made from selling their records, and I thought: I'm really, really poor; I have a huge collection of vinyls and CDs; I should sell some. So I went through my vinyls, and there are THREE I could bear to part with - unsurprisingly, they're not really worth anything cos they're shit.

So, I know collecting is a recognised mania, but I don't think I'm one of those - pretty much everything I have, I treasure and love. But am I wrong/stupid too??? Is a band you love's first vinyl single really more important than not going over your overdraft limit AGAIN?? I'm guessing every here will say yes - that'll validate me :-)

PS. The shit I'm willing to part with is: The More Assured's debut 7", Subliminal Girls 'Hungry Like The Wolf' 7", and a 78 of a 1949 seance recording which I accidentally bought and which is very dull. Hit me up if anyone wants one.

  • not wrong at all.

i'd probably never sell any of my records unless i became homeless and had no turntable left to play them on.

  • I might try get rid of some of my shit

like the stuff I got in m early teens that I don't play anymore. I doubt I would get much for them though so it aint worth the effort. I will wait until a big beat revolution comes round or somat and flog off loadsa Fatboy Slim 12" for mega bucks :-S

  • The b-side...

of that Subliminal Girls single is really good. Trust me!

    • collecting in general is wrong

collecting records is not wrong. There is no explanation. It's just the way it is.

    • My ears say NO

      but each to their own...

    • Juninho!

      ^5

  • i doubt

any of my stuff is worth much, so i'd rather keep it.

    • I've got a few

That seem to go for crazy ridiculous money on eBay at the moment ... that glow-in-the-dark Crystal Castles/HeartsRevolution split I could sell to keep me in cigarettes for a week, but it's a good record, I probably give it more plays than the album. I could shift some Glasvegas vinyl, or Laura Marling's London Town EP, but ... ah, I'm stupid...

  • this...

is why I like mp3s. Music seperated from crap object fetishism.

    • all it takes is one hefty magent over the harddrive though

to wipe all those ones and zeros away.

      • I don't really...

have any hefty magnets in my house, though. Plus, I have most of the original CDs stored away, despite the fact that it's easier to download something than it is to search out the CD and rip it to the computer.

  • Yes and you are helping the music industry

by all the new records bought by the people that theoretically will have bought yours secondhand. Well done.

    • And your point is?

I bet you have no idea what your point is.

      • I didn't mean it sarcastically

I'm thinking up an argument as to why he should keep them.

  • i don't "collect" records like stamps or anything

i just buy records... so i can listen to them... and put them on a shelf when i'm not listening to them.

    wierd shit eh?

    • ^ this

if i collected CDs/records then i'd have to buy all the classics that i don't actually want.

  • if you did decide to sell

you would be better off doing it through here to save on fees dude, but get a photo of all of them in the event of a fire so the insurance company will believe how many you have. Although do not keep said photo in the house, otherwise this too will be engulfed in any blaze thus rendering it pointless.

    • Technically

you are not merely collecting records. Surely you are buying records because you want the music? If you were only buying records because you think they look nice on a shelf, I'd call you a twat. However, it seems to me you're buying records because you love music and there's nothing wrong with that at all.

      • Haha

So I'm allowed to carry on buying records? Cheers dude ... :-|

  • I have a lot of records I bought when I was 14 and never listen to anymore

    proper unreconsituted t-shirt indie stuff:

    Ned's Atomic Dustbin
    Carter USM
    Kingmaker
    Mega City 4
    etc

I would quite happily sell them because I've moved on, taste-wise, but I wouldn't know how to go about selling them, or how much for, and I am too lazy to investigate properly.

    • just

offer them to some fat bald bloke.

      • Do you know any?

        Fat Old Blokes I mean.

        • I know one

          he's my Dad.
He's always hated any guitar based music. He likes Wagner.

He's not actually that fat anymore.

  • this thread is just crying out for some witty Prole comment

about the 'geek pound' and Nick Cave or something.

  • you call records "vinyls"

    burn your face off

    • What's the correct scientific term?

      Shellac? Plastic?

  • I would never sell mine

No chance... they will be the gift I will leave to my children - and I will haunt them if they sell them..

  • it can get to be a bit obsessive

and you could end up spending shitloads of money on stuff now that you may not even listen to in a few months/years time never mind have the space to store!

in hindsight i wish i'd saved a lot of my money instead

    • If you buy a record and you get bored of it

at least you can flog it on. You can't do that with an MP3.

      • I often

worry about "the kids" and what will happen to their RnB if their computers crash. When I say often I mean never.

  • How much for the Seance 78?

    • Haha

      For you, my man, £15...

Some of the comments here miss the point - I didn't come on here and say "I'm a massive twat. I buy any old shit and stroke it lovingly and keep it in an air-tight room..." The discussion was supposed to be: At what point is it stupid to have potential valuable records, that mean a lot to you, sitting at home while you struggle to eat at the end of each month? FUCKINGDANCE says "i'd probably never sell any of my records unless i became homeless and had no turntable left to play them on" and that kinda chimes with my attitude, but I was kinda hoping for some sage to come on and tell me to let go and that...

      Oh well, carry on...

      • I have OCD

so having lots of records I love is quite painful and annoying really, Im always checking theyre protected from warping or getting crushed or whatever, but I cant let go. Id say let go, if you can...

        • But

You can't tell me how? Oh well :-(

Right, even though I digitise all my vinyl, I still prefer listening to them on the turntable, so I don't sell them even then. Can I learn to love the mp3? ... And what's with this lossless? I don't use it because of hard drive space, but is it worth it?

  • There was a time

when I couldn't ever envisage parting with any of my records, even ones that I don't like, but that time has gone and I started selling a few on ebay last year. Only if you love the band and would have trouble getting hold of the item again should you hold on tight. That's where i'm at these days... mint 10" copy of Perfect Sound Forever with insert anyone? Only joking...

  • A few more 7" I can bring myself to sell:

GoodBooks - The Illness, Pete & The Pirates - Knots, Snowfight In The City Centre - Listen, I Was A Cub Scout - Pink Squares (original 7" with Teenage Skin b-side), IAMX - Spit It Out (one-sided promo 7"), Correcto - Joni, Vincent Vincent & The Villians - On My Own... fuck and more too..

This may or may not be connected to my financial situation...

    • Definitely get rid of

any 7" singles that are readily available and have the main track on the album.

Any sort of Foals, Biffy Clyro, Bloc Party etc - the b-sides are never that good. That goes double if you decided to buy the A and B versions they always put out these days. Not good for the environment if nothing else!

      • Good call ...

I like your thinking ... unless the b-side is immensely immense, I'm willing to sell.

Feel free to put your requests below, you don't this sort of overdraft without having a fair old collection....

  • each to their own and all that

but i'm so glad i got over buying and collecting a lot of stuff (records/cds/books/magazines/zines). i kicked my habit when i had to properly move all my stuff out of my parents house last year. i had to take a car load of stuff to the charity shop because i had no room for it. i was like, shiiit i have BOUGHT so much... it felt wrong. since then i buy practically nothing, all my money goes on gigs or doing stuff. experiences over STUFF ftw. and yes, i know that sentiment is a bit lame.

    • but on the plus side

if you go to a charity shop in st neots, cambs they will probably still have a shitload of cool stuff, like ALL THE CARELESS TALK MAGAZINES EVAH. can you believe i parted with them? i felt liberated but sad.

    • No that really helps

Its the sheer SIZE of it that gets to me ... it really brings home to you what you've spent. I've been on about records but it's a lot of the CDs that really bother me, there's so fucking many. And, unlike, the records, I ONLY listen to the digitised CDs, never the actual CDs themselves.

But if I sell them, I've deprived the band of a sale, right?

      • take them to a charity shop?

i dunno if that's different. i didn't feel right/couldn't be arsed to sell my stuff on ebay or whatever.

i know what you mean about the size. it really hit me when my whole life was in boxes just how much stuff i had. previously it was split between there and london but it was all in one place for the first time in five years or something and i was like ARGH, half of this HAS to go.

      • but maybe you can never escape

cos right now i want to OWN all the graphic novels i've borrowed off friends. probably just to impress people when they come round. i am resisting though, which i guess is the difference. it's a weird urge.

        • Exactly

I kinda want to be able to pull 'em off the shelf whenever a friend starts talking about someone, rather than going through iTunes... that's definitely twattish though.

        • I can't bear to part with mine

I now have a family and I have to keep my couple of thousand CDs and records in a cupboard. I work on the basis that eventually I'll be able to afford a big enough house to have a music room.

Yes this is probably very sad but I cannot bear to part with any of them. MP3s just aren't the same.

          • I know

Mp3s seem temporary or someone ill-acquired... A record is yours, unequivocally... But it's all twattish, it don't matter, does it? Maybe I should sell the fucking lot...

  • I want that seance 7"

    I'm not sure why.
Trade? I have loads of 7"s I'd be willing to part with.

    • It's not a 7"

It's a 78. Check your player plays 78s before you enter into some sort of binding agreement :-) But yeah, message me with a few suggestions if you want..

    • My last.fm is

Adzmusic if you wanna see what I like ... but pretty much everything to be honest...
