has he EVER done anything that could be classed as "bad"? the man has written some of my favourite lyrics of all time.
SO LET'S HEAR IT FOR STEPHIN!

Not bad.
But 'I' is pretty boring.
"i thought you were my boyfriend" = <3
That songs alright,
and I quite like "I don't believe you", but I is the only album by him that I've heard that I don't really like.
And some of 69 songs is not that great, but most of it is good and a little of it brilliant.
so you posted in my thread to say
"meh, he's alright"
:(
that isn't appreciation!
OK, OK!
69 Love Songs is fantastically ambitious and has around 10 or 11 brilliant songs on it.
Holidays great and reminds me of the better songs off 69 Love Songs.
Distortion is very good as well, Old Fools is a lovely song and Too drunk to dream could be an anthem for alcholics across the world.
according to sasha fre jones of ui
he's a big fat raaaacist 'cos he don't dig hip hop
.

if this is true, i'm racist too...
"Moreover, the whole of their sustained attack against Merritt is founded on the dangerous and stupid notion that one's taste in music can be interrogated for signs of racist intent the same way a university's admissions process can: If the number of black artists in your iPod falls too far below 12.5 percent of the total, then you are violating someone's civil rights."
you said it
*throws rotten melon*
oh boy I am fucked!
erm... is the guy from 'Why?' black?
Can I count Throwing Muses because they had a black bassist at a couple of points?
I'd honestly never thought of this can of worms before. Actually I've got loads of albums by bands I've never seen a photo of (Hammock, Pelican etc etc) I've no idea what colour they are. Does it really matter?
this is yoni wolf...

i don't know what the people in the bands i listen to look like either. oh well.
Well he's white alright
But then I've decided I don't care.
He's called Yoni Wolf?
That is a truely awesome name.
yeah, i'm not sure if it's real though.
i hope it is.
I've only got 69 love songs and Get Lost
both of which are amazingamazingamazing. It's the best kind of Camp.
too true.
69 lovesongs is truely great
Yes some songs are better than others but I mean, of course there is going to be inconsistnet qulaity. But the ambition! The Scope! The Humour! The Variety! Superb stuff.
I fucking love him.
69 Love Songs is probably my favourite album ever.
I love the earlier stuff too, Get Lost and Holiday especially.
There's some great tracks on i and Distortion, and even Showtunes, but I find that the concepts have been getting in the way of making the songs sound as good as they can.
Also, I've got a bit of a collection of Stephin Merritt cover versions going on
Arcade Fire - Born On A Train
!!! - Take Ecstasy With Me
Peter Gabriel - Book of Love
Divine Comedy - Famous & Love Is Lighter Than Air
Any more for any more?
Divine Comedy
have also covered (on cd) With Whom To Dance, and a cover of The 6ths' The Dead Only Quickly (a slightly different version to the one on The 6ths album).
Is the Arcade Fire Mag Fields cover available anywhere?
I like TMF (especially 69 Love Songs), but do not like the noise/distortion on Distortion, so I don't like that album.
All I have is 69 Love Songs
Here the dealio: it's brilliant. Love it.
But I rarely play it. And it's like okay, this is probably everything I need to know about stephin merrit.
Try to convince me to get new MagFields lp!
Arcade Fire cover

Distortion has a few really great songs on it: California Girls, Too Drunk To Dream, The Nun's Litany, Drive On Driver. But other than those four, i've barely bothered listening to it. If four really great songs is enough to make it worthwhile, you should buy it, if not, don't bother!
I like Distortion too and the 2nd Gothic Archies
Distortion is recorded and mixed in the "wall of sound" tradition and way more "electric" than 69 <3 sngs. The songs too are way different than the lo fi folksy fare on 69 LS; Distortion is like lo-fi bubblegum songs about alcoholism (the pros), hatred of California Girls, a cryptic song entitled "Three-Way" (the title is the only words uttered- it's like this funky little teevee kiddie show theme and a chours of people shouting "Three Way!! periodically- I hated Distortion it at first but I really love it now. Get it, it kicks the New Porno guy's new band off the cliff.
<3
With Whom to Dance is perfect
sincerely grateful
to the architect of such a thread. Mr Merritt is indeed a genius, with 69 Love Songs the peak. Some of the most heartwarming, beautiful, darkly comic, diverse lyrics.
:)
'zactly. and i love the 6ths and also suburban kids... simply perfect.
Did you go to the show?
I got a great report from one of the other users- sounds like they lost a bunch of gear in Dublin the day before and were caught in a posistion of having to rise above adversity and put on a show. That Cadogan Hall sounds perfect for them too- I can't see them in a slobbery pub.
I know this is an appreciation thread but I'd just like to say
he has the dullest voice in the world.
his voice is dull - it's his trademark, he is mournful too
but a richer baritone would be hard to find.
