i really enjoy art brut, i'm an american(/canadian). i was surprised to see a lot of negative reactions to art brut early on this forum. I was curious as to how much our different backgrounds (american vs british) effect our perception of art brut. I, for example, think art brut would not work so well as an american band.
just thoughts, what are yours?

I can see how America would like Art Brut more
They're pretty much a (very very good)novelty act aren't they. And British to the bone. I love them and I know plenty of people who agree. Not sure about a general british perception of them though.
They certainly seem to have a decent following in North America...
I think they're a fair bit better known on your side of the Atlantic.
Curiously, they're also big in Germany too.
Personally, I think they're great, especially live. The second album didn't do much for me though. It'll probably be make or break for them next time around.
So, are you American or Canadian? Make up your mind!
:D
I can completely see why
they would be big in America as they are very British in a way that is pretty endearing I would imagine.
I think many english music fans think they are a bit of a joke for the same reasons.
For the record those people are wrong. They are a great band, and that second album is 100% superb.
"I think many english music fans think they are a bit of a joke for the same reasons. "
this is what i was curious about
Its the sort of
wordy, spoken vocals all about very english things, They come across as a bit of novelty act, which I think is pretty unfair.
i've never
thought of them as a novelty act, say like the darkness.
art brut are NOT
big in america. they've really fallen off with popularity here
*(thank god)
b/c they fucking suck balls
Nobody was claiming that they were......
U2esque stadium fillers, simply that their profile appears to be higher in North America than it is in the UK.
dual citizen
live in america, but can't deny my roots, eh?
I am a cynical,moody
judgemental, pretentious Brit and I love Eddie & Co. Saw them by chance in 05 at Reading, loved the shambolic "Ready Art Brut?" energy&have seen them a few times. They always whip up a storm live. Love the 1st album, admit not really listened to 2nd but a must see live band for me.
I'm British
and think they are one of the best live bands I have ever seen. The whole two times I have seen then I've spent the whole set smiling and laughing and just fucking enjoying it.
Absolutely great band live, on record still quite good. Everyone really does need to see them live though, they are a completely different animal compared to their records.
His speeches that go on through his gigs also make them incredible, Eddie Argos is just unbelievably likeable, it's unreal.
one of the best live bands around
100% fact.
Loved them
until the second album. But yeah they are British eccentrics and some people can't take that seriously.
I'm neither british or american
but they do look like a novelty act.
That said, they can write really good songs but second album was a bit of a disappointment : too serious, not enough tunes !
What is this anti second album thing?
Its almost like you all want them to sound exactly like Sultans of Ping FC or something!
^ Admittedly, it was somewhat lacking in songs about
Japanese girls.
cool cool cool
Japanese girls
Fatty Argos!
I dont think ive heard an Art Brut Song thats not been ripped off from another artist,
search your feelings, you know it to be true
name one that's ripped off another
i can think of emily kane having a similar riff to Party Hard, but that's all
i basically agree 100% with everyone
i fucking love them
but realise that lots of british people think they're a joke1
and i dont care for the second album
