Drowned in Sound

Anyone heard Pacific Ocean Blue?

I'm considering buying it at the weekend, I've heard he's just as talented, maybe even more so than his brother Brian.

I love Pet Sounds, so I'm hoping this record will be just as good.

Looking back on Dennis's life on wikipedia, he had a really tough time. Alcoholic father, constantly under-minded by his brother and at one point he befriended Charles Manson!

  • its good...

and the bonus disc is really cool too.

    get it!

  • It's top of my list of CDs to buy

but I can't help thinking that Fleet Foxes seriously owe him some of their column inches - considering that their albums came out around the same time, and that their sound is fairly indebted to the Wilson brothers, the coverage of Pacific Ocean Blue was very minimal.

    • highly

recommend it. However it isn't particularly in the same vein as the Beach Boys - POB is far more varied in tone, pretty bleak while also quite uplifting with epic gospel thrown in the mix.

      Some great instrumentals too.

      • It

sounds like a hidden gem :) Can't wait to hear it.

It's my favourite album ever- took a while to get into coming from the perspective of loving the Beach Boys...but it grew and grew on me.

Get some hankies ready. I still can't listen to 'thoughts of you' and 'time' without getting a little bit teary, which proved a little embarrassing when the former came on in HMV the other day ;)

    • agreed

Thoughts of You, River Song and Time are excellent. same with Forever though, i have a hard time listening to dennis wilson's sentimental love songs knowing he beat the crap out of his girlfriends and cheated constantly on them.

      • bf

Never heard that he beat his women...and the cheating thing works cos those songs are like a confessional

"I'm the kinda guy, who loves to mess around. Know a lot of women"

        etc ;)

        • i guess

i can't get round the hypocracy/insincerity of it* - prefer brians lyrics (particularly his late beach boys/solo efforts which are honestly bare) nb: i realise that he collaborated a lot with others on his lyrics.

*although i expect this is true for a lot of artists, just that as a big fan i've read a lot about the Beach Boys.

  • He also wrote the theme tune for Fawlty Towers

    one for the trivia fans

  • I've been starting threads on this album

Pretty much weekly for a couple of months - had never heard it before the reissue, but am now obsessed with it...
