The greatest one-two punches on an album...

I don't know if this one will fly but...

Thread is dedicated to two GREAT songs, one after the other, on an album. You know, even if you really like an album and all the songs are pretty good, you notice if there are two genuinely stand-out tracks back to back. Perhaps its the best two songs on the album jammed together.

As examples (and to get the ball rolling)

LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver
4. Someone Great > 5. All My Friends

Talking Heads - 77
7. The Book I Read > 8. Don't Worry About The Government

  • Now i love Pinkerton

    But the two most killer tracks for me are;

5, Across The Sea > 6, The Good Life

Across the Sea breaks your heart, The Good Life gets you angry about it.

  • love - forever changes

    1. along again or ---> 2. a house is not a motel

both kick out, scream, soar and dazzle, whilst the rest of the album is left to pick up the pieces.
they're not necessarily the best tracks, but the ones with the most impact.

  • Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam

    For Reverend Green - Fireworks

    • thought of this

as soon as i saw the thread title.
      other favs:
      rehab>know i'm no good
      ziggy>suffragette city
rocks off>rip this joint (exile on main)
      teenage riot>silver rocket
      chemical warfare>california uber alles
      marriage>hope (descendents)

the pinkerton ones are a good call

      • talking heads

        do it a lot:

        1. born under punches
        2. crosseyed...

        5. the girls want to be with the girls
        6. found a job

        also rubber soul
        1. drive my car
        2. you won't see me

        and about a million others

  • million dead - a song to ruin

pornography for cowards -> breaking the back. or breaking the back -> i am the party for that matter.

    • Correct!

I also like 'after the rush hour' > 'plan b' off the 2nd.

      Yeah!

  • weird one this but...

Billy Bragg - Don't Try This At Home
    7. God's Footballer > 8. The Few

The rest of the album is a bit shit....

    • Weezer has loads...

Buddy Holly > Undone (The Sweater Song)
Hash Pipe > Island in the Sun

    • super furry animals

fuzzy logic- 2 fuzzy birds 3 something for the weekend
radiator- 7 play it cool 8 hermann loves pauline
guerrilla- 10 the door to this house remains open 11 the teacher
mwng- 6 pan ddaw'r wawr 7 ysbeidiau heulog
rings around the world- 4 it's not the end of the world 5 receptacle for the respectable
phantom power- 13 the undefeated 14 slow life
love kraft- 7 frequency 8 oi frango
hey venus- 6 into the night 7 baby ate my eightball

  • Michael Jackson

    Thriller and Beat It

    or

    Beat It and Billie Jean

    surely?

  • Friend Opportunity opens with two songs

The Perfect Me and + 81

    that are dashed decent.

Choo Choo Choo Choo Beep Beep.

    • spoon - gimme fiction

      2. i turn my camera on
      3. My mathematical mind

      • spoon - ga x 5

        9. finer feelings
        10. black like me

        • Yeah spoon are good at this

What about on girls can tell?
          6. Anything you Want
          7. Take A walk
Or the opening two songs on that album, for that matter...

    • Runners Four

Wrong Time Capsule - Spirit Ditties

      Or

      Spirit Ditties - Scream Team

  • Interpol

    Untitled ====> Obstacle 1

    • then of course PDA and NYC

but for the sake of arguement those two.

      • If you like a bit of hardcore

        Hatebreeds new 'Superemacy' album
        9. The Most Truth
        10. Never Let It Die

        Both standouts on it.

        • Gonzales, off 'The Entertainist'

          4. Futuristic Aint Shit To Me
          5. This One Jam

          Both chunes.

  • mean mr mustard into polythene pam of course!

  • Rocket From The Crypt - Scream, Dracula, Scream!

    Middle > Born in '69 > On A Rope

Now that's a one-two punch, followed by an uppercut in the form of their most well known track.

  • My ears say-

Boris - Pink>Woman on the Screen
Trail of Dead - Mistakes and Regrets>Totally Natural
McLusky - Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues>No New Wave
Enon - Pleasure and Privelege>Natural Disasters
Icarus Line - On the Lash>Caviar
Blood Brothers - Feed Me to the Forest>Trash Flavoured Trash

  • I was listening to Red Medicine

and it struck me just what a great start it gets off to. Do You Like Me followed by Bed for the Scraping? Shit yeah.

  • Bit of an obvious one, but

    1.Airbag > 2.Paranoid Android

    Also:
3.I Know It's Over > 4.Never Had No One Ever
I love the sheer overwhelming dirginess of putting these two tracks together. It works, but it shouldn't.

2.Seeing Other People > 3.Me and the Major
Just two of their best songs, like, next to each other and shit.

    • Reading my mind much?

Smiths and B&S are spot on.

I'll add 2. Pattern Against User 3. One Armed Scissor

  • and the winner is

    4. exit music (for a film)
    5. let down

    thank you and good night

  • Miss Machine

    1. Panasonic Youth
    2. Sunshine the Werewolf

    Fucking unrelenting brutality.

    • Calculating Infinity

has an even better opening for me. In fact, that is a band that knows how to start an album.

  • Fucking Champs

    Never enough neck pt. 1
    Never enough neck pt. 2

    Is that cheating?

  • Hmmm...

For Reverend Green->Fireworks (Animal Collective "Strawberry Jam")

    Glosoli->Hoppipolla (Sigur Ros "Takk")

Crown Of Love->Wake Up (Arcade Fire "Funeral"

  • my tuppeneth...

    Psychocandy
In a Hole > Taste of Cindy

    or

    MC5
Kick Out The Jams > Come Together

  • Concubine - Fault and Fracture

    Am I Wry? No - 156
    Reena - Incinerate

    • I love how

XTRMNTR goes from Kill all hippies to Accelerator quite a lot.

  • Sigur Ros

    Glosoli > Hoppipolla

  • The Lexicon Of Love

    6. The Look Of Love (Part One) > 7. Date Stamp

    • I'm thinking

Mellow my Mind > Roll another number (for the road) from Tonight's the Night.

Tell me Why > After the Gold Rush

I'd agree with Daydream Nation (Teenage Riot and Silver Rocket)

      Loomer > Touched from Loveless

      • bLOOD bROTHERSSS

        1. Set Fire to the Face of Fire
        2. We Ride Skeletal Lightning

        AWESOMENESS.

        • 1. Guitarmy

          2. Fucking's Greatest Hits

          more like!

  • Ok

    Fugazi: Turnover >>> Repeater

    Mogwai: Ex-Cowboy >>> Chocky

Husker Du: New Day Rising >>> Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill

Dinosaur Jr: Out There >>> Start Choppin'

  • Murderer and Violent Past by Low

is a devastating 1-2 to finish off Drums and Guns.

    Also:
    Daft Punk - Discovery
    2. Aerodymanic > 3. Digital Love

    • Do you prefer the version of murderer on Drums and Guns

or the older styled sounding one (I don't know where I got it from). I think the older one is much more affecting.

      • I prefer

the album version just about, but they're both great and the one on the album version is brilliantly bleak.

  • daft punk and interpol

the first four tracks on discovery in whatever 1-2 punch combo you please,
and interpol not even jail - public pervert on antics-probably my fave 1-2 punch knock out blow, roundhouse kick moment.

  • you are all wrong

sgt peppers lonely hearts club band - with a little help from my friends. and the bit where the 2 meet is the single greatest moment in musical history.

    • I'm going to say again

Mean Mr. Mustard - Polythene Pam. much better.

    • trail of dead

Days of Being Wild > Relative Ways, that split second inbetween is just perfect. That album is near perfect though...

      • I was going to say

Aged Dolls into Richter Scale Madness tagegd onto the end of World's Apart.
        It's so sososososososososososo. !

        • Heh I was gonna say

It Was There, followed by Another Morning Stoner.

          • Ode To Isis

into Will You Smile Again. And that ^

    • guillemots

on the 'from the cliffs EP'

trains to brazil - made up lovesong #43

i'm not sure if it's a great one-two punch or more of a sprint-start by a band whose output sounds otherwise clinically obese.

  • hmmm

    Whatever Happened > Reptillia
    LCD example already given
Clan in Da Front > Wu Tang: 7th Chamber
Patty Lee > What would wolves do?

    • also

patty lee and what would wolves do.
      Brilliant

  • 2 i can think of on the top of my head

    Talking Heads

Once in a lifetime - Houses in Motion (remain in light)

    Prince

    Computer Blue - Darling Nikki

  • ..

    Muse - Citizen Erased/Micro Cuts
Mystery Jets - Veiled In Grey/Two Doors Down

  • This is very strange

I was actually thinking of making a thread exactly like this a few days ago when I was overwhelmed by Me and the Bean followed by Lines in the Suit on Spoon's Girls Can Tell.

  • 2. the world at large 3. float on

    waving flags. no lucifer.

  • skeletal lightning/laser life

  • right now

lea room -> our bipolar friends

    • YANK CRIME

Here Come the Rome Plows > Do You Compute?

  • Hennings Favourite ---> Salt, Pepa and Spinderella

  • Sufjan Stevens

    Chicago > Casimir Pulaski Day
    or...
    The Arcade Fire
    Neighboorhoods #1 and 2

oh and Doin' The Cockroach/Cowboy Dan/ Trailer Trash is surely the ultimate 123 punch.

    • damn right on Sufjan

see also Michigan - Holland > Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head

  • Joy Division

    She's Lost Control >>>> Shadowplay

  • Madame Hollywood > Silver Screen Shower Scene

  • off "The Cars"

"You're All I've Got Tonight" > "Bye, Bye Love"

  • begin the begin/these days

at the start of REM's Lifes Rich Pageant. Absolutely THE best way to start an album.

Blister and Clarity by Jimmy Eat World

The New Pornographers - Use It/The Bleeding Heart Show

In The Drugs and Last Snowstorm Of The Year back-to-back on Low's Trust. Almost too much beauty at once.

  • The Argument

    Full Disclosure - Epic Problem.

Jawbox - For Your Own Special...

    Savory - Breathe.

    Yeahssssssss!

    • For drunken parties is has to be

      2) Fujiyama Attack and 3) Kaminari One

on Guitar Wolf's 'Jet Generation'. Astounding.

    • The Wedding Present - Seamonsters

      Dalliance > Dare

Teenage Fanclub - Songs From Northern Britain

Start Again > Aint That Enough

  • Green Day: Nimrod

    11: Jinx
    12: Haushinka

    A personal fave.

  • Baby, We'll Be Fine > Friend of Mine

Off Alligator by The National always gets me. Also, Acsension Day > After The Flood from Laughing Stock (Talk Talk) and Black > Raining in Darling from I See A Darkness (Bonnie Prince Billy) are bloody amazing as well. Been mentioned loads already, but For Reverend Green > Fireworks really is the absolute pinnacle of Animal Collective's work to date.

    • Cheap Trick - At Budokan

      1. Hello There
      2. Come On, Come On

      COME ON!

  • BRMC

    Stop > Six Barrel Shotgun

  • .

Bitten By The Tailfly > Newborn from Asleep In The Back

    Perhaps not punchy right enough...

  • Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me

Little Fury Things --> Kracked / The Lung --> Raisins

Queens of the Stone Age - Queens of the Stone Age

Regular John --> Avon / How to Handle A Rope --> Mexicola

  • a nervous tic motion of the head to the left > fake palindromes

    positive tension > banquet

  • Turn On The Bright Lights

Untitled > Obstacle 1 is a firm one-two to the ribs; NYC > PDA follows that with an uppercut and a slamming left hook; Say Hello To The Angels and Hands Away continue with light but sharp jabbing, as you feel yourself weakening substantially; however, Stella delivers what appears to be a vital blow and as you sway uncertainly in a delirious haze, you faintly make out in your one working eye, through the blood pouring down your face, Roland looming over you just before it sends you crashing to the floor, jaw shattered; The New proceeds to rip out your entrails and as Leif Erikson spins away you find it has jacked off into your blood stream, fatally permeating your very being and forever leaving a part of the album nestled firmly within your heart.

  • fu manchu: the falcon has landed > seahag

flaming lips: when you smile > kim's watermelon gun
nick cave: god is in the house > oh my lord

  • 3. Wonderwall > 4. Don't Look Back In Anger

    Ooh yeah!
