And an absolute million times better than the over-rated tub of shite known as Little Baby Nothing. Seriously, probably just under EMG in the league of Manics albums, and I actually like most of the post-Richie stuff (well, apart from This Is My Truth, which was plain inexcusable). Sleepflower, La Tristesse Durera and Nostalgic Pushead are just incredible songs.
Although by no means their best record, with great songs like Roses In The Hospital and Life Becoming A Landslide, it certainly doesn't deserve to be overlooked.
Is the most underrated manics album! Of the four singles released off that, 2 are awful but most of the album tracks are amazing, just not commercial.
I like GATS but it's not as good as GT or The Holy Bible. It's a bit soft-rock and it's kind of their 'erm, we didn't sell 15 million copies of GT so we still have to be a band, but we're not really sure what to actually do' record.
their 3rd best behind the holy bible and everything must go. just edges generation terrorists but i love both so so much as they soundtracked my teens... my perfect teen years.
lyrically GATS is tremendous; it's also musically amazing. It may sound, at points, quite classic-stadium rock but it's packed full of quality songs. TIMTruth is rubbish with a few exceptions and 'You Stole The Sun From My Heart' is just a terrible song.
It's at times like this when I remember how much of a Manics fan-boy I was between the ages 13-18.
profoundly (often painfully) personal; it's not quite as visceral as The Holy Bible but as thematic dress rehearsals go, it's still bastard powerful.
And the TUNES!
Sleepflower: TUNE.
From Despair To Where: TUNE
La Tristessa Durera: TUNE
Life Becoming A Landslide: TUNE
Roses In The Hospital: TUNE
Nostalgic Pushead: TUNE (if somewhat bonkers, but those keyboards on the 3rd verse are incredible)
And the rest is pretty effective stadium fare. It's similar in production to 'Everything Must Go', but with added Ranty Thrills. 2nd best Manics album, by a fair old way there, buh.
MSP's worst album
from 1st to 5th inclusive.
But
'La Tristesse Durera'. That is all.
Manic Street Preachers?
Their best album.
I'm right. You all better recognise.
joke alert
DRUG DRUG DRUGGY
BEDS TO DIFFER
BEDS
Those three words do that album a disservice.
I wish that song were called something else. HUG HUG HOODIE, or something.
The only half-weak song on the album

2nd best album
after The Holy Bible. But seriously underrated. Roses in the Hospital, La Tristesse Durera, From Despair to Where are all genius.
Much better than the turgid and very patchy later stuff
sounds like Bon Jovi.
See, I knew you liked it really.
I'd agree.
Although by no means their best record, with great songs like Roses In The Hospital and Life Becoming A Landslide, it certainly doesn't deserve to be overlooked.
I'd lean to agree
I do really like it, but it's really overproduced. Some of the songs just needed to a bit grittier and they'd have slayed.
It is fucking brilliant though
its my second favourite
of theirs, after the holy bible.
all this praise is pure insanity
this album sucks in comparison to Generation Terrorists, and even more so to The Holy Bible - one of the best albums of all time.
Everything Must Go and even the one after it are better than this too.
The last three tracks are the best three on the album. All the others are silly.
^ Bon Jovi fan
You're pure insanity.
Generation Terrorists - at least eight songs too long. At least.
Holy Bible - bit miserable, innit?
Everything Must Go - two decent songs does not a good album make.
Gold Against The Soul - pretty fucking ace all the way through.
These thoughts are obviously DEAD SERIOUS. I do think it's the best one though, that bit's true.
WOAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH WE'RE HALFWAY THERE.
^ What he said
you're also mental
you're mental
BUT HEY! COCAINE KEEPS CHOLESTEROL AT BAY!
That's the best.
Generation Terrorists
could have been great but it's overly long, has God awful production and too much filler. Gold Against the Soul is twice the album.
really really good
'From Despair To Where?' - so good lyrically and musically.
'Rosies In The Hospital' is great, so is La Tristesse Durera. The only crap song is Nostalgic Pushead.
The only crap song is Nostalgic Pushead.
What? No. Listen again.
embarrassing album
and one I deeply regret buying
it has some of their best songs on it
roes in the hospital, lifes becoming a landslide, but also has some horrible 'rock' on it. I dont really care anymore.
Roses in the hospital
is one of the worst songs I have ever heard. It may actually be the worst. Completely hideous
But
this simply cannot possibly be true. You're using hyperbole to stress that you don't like the record.
I'm actually not
I truly detest that song.
But
it cannot be the worst song you've ever heard. I refuse to accept that.
it's my least favourite song
i feel like i'm missingggggg
pieces of sleep!
a memory fades to a...pale landscape!
i love this record. i would say i rank richey-era manics in this order:
holy bible
generation terrorists
GATS
i feel like after richey left, they lost some of their nerve. :(
yessssssssssss - def underrated
been listening to it this arvo and it does rock!
and agree
they lost their soul when richey left the band. they are now just dad rock.
theres a couple of good songs on it
Life Becoming a Landslide, La Tristessa Durera, Roses in the Hospital. But really its nothing compared to The Holy Bible
bamos
you're a fukin brain wrong chimp.
IT HURTS SO MUCH.
It's OK
Starts off on a flyer, but the mega cock rock vibe wears thin after the first 3 songs. Roses is great though.
someone told me to vote conservative....
I love it and hate it.
I agree with those of you who said 'great songs' - true.
I also agree with those people who said 'horrible soft rock, bon-jovi sound' - also true.
Whether you can overlook the latter to appreciate the former depends upon your tolerances I guess. I waxes and I wanes.
I absolutely love this album
one of their best, better than 'Generation Terrorist' and 'This Is My Truth' - only bettered than 'The Holy Bible' and 'Everything Must Go.'
Whilst we're at it, MSP albums in order of preference:
1. The Holy Bible
2. Everything Must Go
3. Gold Against The Soul
4. Generation Terrorist
5. This Is My Truth
The rest don't count.

love the lyric from life becoming a landslide
'Though there is no true love,
Just a finely tuned jealousy'
It's good but but but
the holy bible
word

i find it pretty boring musically
but it has some good song titles that make it sound important, so i am unable to write it off completely.
I fucking hate that album
sleepflower is amazingly good
there isn't enough love for this song on the thread!
