I was thinking about this today: i can't think of a "popular" band today (either in the mainstream or in DiSsy circles) who uses a Gibson les paul style guitar, likewise with the stratocaster. They seem to be considerer "fogeys guitars". I remember a few years back the humble telecaster adorned the shoulders of pretty much every indie guitarist and It still does to an extent, though these days it seems to be Gibson and kramer guitars with the dual cutaway type thingy that are all the rage, whilst fender mustangs have always been the rage with "experimental" types. I predict in the next few years that gibson SGs will come back into fashion.

Is it purely because of the sound of guitars that they correspond with the popular sound of the kids or is it more than that?

Sorry for this extremely nerdy thread.

metal guys like to jump around a lot nowadays

so they tend to ditch les pauls for sgs or some newer lighter type.

teles are still up there.

strats..i hate them....and you're probably right..seen as an old fogey thing..

mustang..don't see the attraction..i did when i was 14 but i would never spend money on one unless it was cheap....

what i would liek to know..
where the fuck did all these travis beans come from all fo a sudden???

an observation

gibson les paul cost big money no?

yeah

but you can still get really good imitations for really cheap

Gibson Les Paul Junior or Melody Maker

alot less money and they rule!

My guilty guitar wish: Billy Joe's signature Les Paul Junior, $1,100 w/ leopard skin case- ACE!

SG's have always been great

and i've always seen people using them.

I saw Wolfmother

Andrew had a vast quatity of Gibson:

SG

Doubleneck SG

335

dave longstreth - stratocaster

that's reason enough for me to save up for one, so i can be as amazing as him

this thread has got me thinking

who do you think will be considered the great guitarists of this time- the 00s? or is this an outdated 70s/80s- esque phenomena?

i have a limited edition les paul

it's limited edition because it's a cool colour. i've bookmarked this post for when my band is popular

You gotta consider those kinds of things.

Let me ask you: Have you thought about your personal signature guitar yet- just for posterity.

Mine is a double neck (fret and fretless) Fender Jazz Bass Areodyne, all black with silver hardware and trim, ebony neck, aluminum dots, and signature coiled 100 ft bass chord.

*100 ft. bass CORD

sorry talkin guitars- I'm thinking "chord"

I'm gitarded.

I hope one day someone invents a guitar lead

that doesn't get tangled up, or break.

I have about a dozen leads that don't work- shorts?

And all realitively new too. What is going on there?

I spend more money on that kind of stuff than I do guitars.

I've had the same one for ages...

I think it's only a matter of time though.

I think if I had a signature guitar, it'd be a Fender Jagmaster, racing green, chrome hardware, wide-ranging humbuckers and a floating trem. That'd be ace.

most of my stuff is almost black

so i'm as cool as you can get, without veering into goth-dom. so my guitar is a dark blue-black sunburst kind of. sounds lame, but is awesome

that fucker

where did he get it??

where?

rich bastard

Look at the size of that guitar strap!

He might as well be playing slap bass at that height.

i want to choke

him with his own shiny guitar

shit

is that a net threat..

no i don;t

i was joking

i wish it though

very much

they do

acutally past 77 or soemething all tbs were the kramer ones weren't they?
the onesd with part wood part alumium necks..

still jsut as expensive.

so uyeh..

rich cunt

it's a travis bean

i think they were made by the same company.
no idea how he could afford it - i'm sure he used it before they got their hands on some transgressive mega buck$.

Some of what you say is purely fashion.

Some guitarists want to play what so and so plays and some want to make a statement by playing something unique and some guitarists just play whatever is around but most guitarists just know what they like and choose guitars accordingly.

Adam Jones of Tool - Les Paul Classic Custom Silverburst.

Wata of BORIS- Les Paul Custom

I was trying to think what Wata uses..

I think a lot of her sound is the huge cranked Orange stack though!

Wata plays a custom

look up^ on my previous post

whoops

: S

not a fan of any of the les pauls i've played

nice sound, but they're too big, heavy and fat (especially the necks) for my liking.

giving me a tele/jazzmaster any day.

*

GIVE

Les Paul has a raspy, fat, growling tone

that is impossible to get with any other guitar.

I love telecasters but they are clangy and twangy.

Jazzmasters are amazing but it's hard to get em away from that fender sound, whereas a gibson is more versitile (sound wise). But for the lack of a tremelo, my Son's 335 gets the best surf sound of any guitar I've played- a sound that is generally associated with Fender.

Try the custom or deluxe teles,

That clangy and twangy sound you mention can definitely be swerved, I think they're more versatile, particularly the custom.

Also for surf sounds try the Wilson Bros Ventures series, they're real nice to play, a bit of a bargain as well.

.

Get a 60's neck, much thinner. Also ian williams plays a gibson les paul no idea what model. As does dave kopoknononona from lynx/battles but i think he drops it an octave and plays bass lines with it.

Boris use some delicious customised les pauls

I like Mustangs and Jaguars myself.... Just for how they look. Lovely dirty sound too.

I like the offset-waist fenders

they're really comfortable, and have a nice weight balance.

A lot of metal guitarists

seem to have the ibanez influenced ones..
I think stratocasters maybe had become so popular that people wanted to use something different visually- maybe also distancing themselves from the cheap strat copies you get from argos etc.

Tone wise indie-rock is incredibly dull at the moment. There's so many bands who have this really thin, clean, dry sound that has no balls to it at all. It annoys me seeing someone with a jazzmaster or jaguar, who has put no effort into thinking how the sound fits, and having a really dull tone that doesn't cut through the band at all.

Personally I prefer the feel of a fender to a gibson (I've never got on with the gibson bridges as much) but I prefer the sound of dual humbuckers. I've got a modified jagmaster at the moment so it's kind of the best of both worlds in a way.

Well there's...

Band of Horses
Steve Malkmus
British Sea Power
Foo Fighters
Interpol

And to be fair Gibson Les Paul Studios (of which I have 2) are really reasonably priced for what they are at about £700.

I have a Fender Stratocaster...

and I don't know anyone who has said it's out of date or a fogey's guitar, at least not to my face anyway!

Alex Turner played one in the "...Dancefloor" video.

Strats will always be fuckin' cool!

The Alex Turner example

was meant to be in response to bands that use them nowadays, not that I think he's cool or anything!

yeah of course they're cool

but i don't think you'd catch a lead guitarist in an indie band playing one these days (dave longstreth being the exception). Whenever they hit out with anything resembling a solo they'd have to deal with "he thinks he's hendrix".

i just got a gordon smith

they have never been fashionable but it's ace.

yeah

whatever santana

carlos,

please....

I love Les Pauls

I only have a Epiphone Les Paul (albeit one with AMAZING Seymour Duncan pickups) but I am thinking of getting a Les Paul Standard.

The only thing that puts me off is the weight of a Gibson Les Paul - I may opt for a Rickenbacker 620; the necks are super-fast.

Not being funny here

but why are you considering two guitars that are about as far apart tone-wise as you can get?

Just seems a little odd, that's all.

Because I like both and can only afford one, maybe?

I know that they are different tonally.

Ah

Why didn't I think of that?

Anyone want to buy my Jaguar

it remans very much in fashion, especially with the whole MBV thing (yeah yeah Jzzmaster etc)

price?

i have a gordon smith too.

love it.

one of the guys in EiTS plays a strat

but yeah you don't see many indie bands using them

Yeah, a lot of fogeys play them but

not a fogey guitar- no way. Stratocaster is the most imitated guitar design in history.

i don't like seeing bands with expensive guitars

how much do jaguar/jazzmasters cost?

500ish for a reissue

Not *that* much.

the japanese ones £500

the american ones £1200
they have just started making mexican ones dont know how much they will cost if they make it over here

The reissue I have

Is very disapointing. Avoid.

I got a japanese one about 10 years ago

it took alot of effort setting up (getting a mustang bridge solved all problems permanantly) but it great. I recently changed the pickups for some vintage correct ones and cant say they are significanty better than the stock ones except maybe in the bridge position. I would honestly run into a burning building to save it.

The bridge is a joke

I had the saddles changed to solve it whic I was assured would be even better than the mustang bridge option but it still sucks. Keep having to have it set up again, and you get new dead notes all the time. Just dont use it now and play my awesome awesome tokai SG instead (amongst other, much cheaper much better guitars).

if it is because the bridge is sinking

you just need to set it in the position you want and use a couple of drops of nail varnish on the threads. If it is because strings are skiping out of the saddle use heavier strings or switch to a mustang bridge with its single grooves. If you have dead notes the action is probably too low, raise the bridge.

avey tare plays a strat

Bjorn copeland from black dice plays a les paul type thingy.

recent strats ive seen live:

times new viking, beach house, of montreal, okkervil river.

I think strats and les pauls being the two most popular guitars in the world are a reason indie types avoid them, wanting something a bit different. Models like jazzmasters, jaguars and mustangs became popular among indie tyes because they could be bought for next to nothing in the 80's and early 90's.

I hate gibsons, that bit in juno where she is like 'wow is that les paul ive always prefered them to fenders' I thought that was pretty unrealistic

im sure..

... someone in battles uses a les paul.
(so they must be cool right?)
personally tho for me its tele's all the way

Both

Williams and Konopka play Les Pauls and Braxton plays a Strat.

he is

who i think of first when anyone mentions les pauls.

The Hold Steady

use Les Pauls. As do The National I think.

And

Speedo. The end.

the national

use epiphone and silvertone i think. silvertones are surprisingly lush for guitars that were sold in sears during the 60s

My prodictions are

every one will be using a Yamaha RGX 112P like mine even though it's probibly shit and I have had it since I was about 14 and still can't play...

The Coal Chamber guitarist has a gnarly Yamaha

He's got it set up bizarre too- can't remember details but he gets some of the coolest sounds ever.

i think the reason

so many indie guitarists use telecasters is because of radiohead. it's fair to assume that guitarists of a certain age group got into playing the guitar through radiohead and so wanted to jock all of jonny greenwood's moves. a good example of this is the guy from bloc party.

according to this poor logic, the next big guiatr will be the fender bronco or strat. whichever it is that alex turner of the arctic monkeys plays.

or really expensive aluminium guitars like foals use.

I think the reason

so many indie guitarists use Telecasters is because there's no fucking around with them. One volume, one tone, two pickups, great tone.

I have two Teles, a Strat, a Les Paul, an Epiphone archtop, etc...and I keep coming back to the Teles. They're just simple, great-sounding guitars.

It's probably more to do with that than coolness.
