do you have lots of musical conversations with them? have given/received advice? is there a wonderful consensus regarding certain bands?
my older brother's music taste is basically rubbish in my book. camp cock-rock with nothing of any substance sandwiched between mainstream cheese and 80's embaressments.
as a consequence, he consistently dismisses my musical meanderings as pretentious, crap and pointless.
he once said boredoms sounded like two amateur bands playing separate crap songs at the same time.
so yeah? thoughts and things?
I love radiohead.
My brother loves Kylie Minogue.
Musically I was always on my own in my house. My mom has always been interested in what bands I'm currently into though.
My sister has the most varied taste of anyone I know
She listens to a lot of stuff I do and came with me to see Morrissey and Beck last week. However she loves mainstream pop, R&B, dance etc etc. If I play her something I can never work out if she'll like it or not.
My friend at work
who is 27 year old man, his favourite artist is Michael Bolton.
my brother likes some of the same stuff as me
but hes not really into any punk and hardcore, so i dont talk to him about that
I recently had a conversation
with my elder sister about favourite music.
Hers: Nine Inch Nails, Tori Amos, Nick Cave
Mine: Scott Walker, Magnetic Fields, Radiohead, Nick Cave, Girls Aloud
We both share a deep-rooted love of Pulp and proper pop music. She has generally good taste, apart from the inexplicable love for Tori Amos.
Also, I once lent her OK Computer and she returned it saying, "yeah, it was okay, a bit samey though."
My younger sister likes McFly and musicals, which is both worrying and upsetting.
Tori Amos > Almost anything else
Absolutely nothing wrong with Tori Amos
Tori Amos = shit Joni Mitchell
Horrible.
Wo wo wo, were...
Radiohead and Girls Aloud used in the same sentence here?!...
My sister listens to Kasabian and Oasis all day
Full blast too. I know every word to every Kasabian song and every b-side because of this. Even though I utterly DESPISE them.
Curiously, she also likes Pavement.
In terms
of guitar bands, we are pretty much identical. He knows a lot about afro-beat and stuff like that though, which I dont know much about, I only really know things like Fela Kuti, but he doesnt have quite the same enthusiasm for techno that I do.
My brothers into funky house and quite mainstream indie
Last time I visited him he played me the Reverend & the Makers album (which, in fairness, is better than I imagined it to be)
He likes cheesy chart 'indie', commercial rap music and WAKKY!!!11 student stuff.
I've been to two shows with him in his 23 years. One was Reading 2001, he was an obnoxious little cunt all day, thought Eminem was the best thing ever.
Then he came to see Jurassic 5 a couple of years ago, he enjoyed it.
He lives in Maidenhead now which just goes to show that you get what you deserve.
haha
that is punishment enough for anyone!
As far apart as it might be possible to be, I think.
Haha, great thread...
Me and my brother have a pretty similar taste in music.
Although, being brothers, we have to have a little rivalry. I slate him for listening to too much "boring American shit" (Silver Jews, Pavement, My Morning Jacket - all bands I like, just not as much him), and he has digs at me for listening to too much "heavy crap" (Fucked Up, Bomb The Music Industry, Health, Boris).
The truth is, we have pretty similar record collections.
I got a 11 year old brother too...
who rinses Bromheads Jacket, Weezer, Mystery Jets, Wolf Parade, Jakobinarina, Good Shoes and British Sea Power. Thanks to a combination of me and my other bro.
my older brother
is responsible for me getting into the smiths, the fall, pixies at a very young age.
he's 11 years older than me
we used to have lots of musical debates
some of them ended up in violence.
i remember the 'grunge' debate didn't end well
my sister nothing
nothing at all.
although i remember jumping on her bed listening to sos band when her nad her mates busied themselves with their shoulder pads and hairspray
I have llimited overlap with my sis
She basically is all about the pop, with some mainstream indie and dance (Kylie, Gwen Stefanie, Basement Jaxx, bit of Artic Monkeys, KoL and Kaisers). We can find some common ground, but she described my music as "weird".
*limited
yeah
Poles apart
My sister recently got a laptop so I asked her if she wanted me to bring any tunes round to put on it. Bearing in mind she likes the Goo Goo Dolls and George Michael I took some eighties stuff like Japan and Tears for Fears and Talking Heads, along with LCD and Fleet Foxes and Field Music. I bet she just deletes it all. Her most played track on iTunes was Ace of Base. Fucksake.
We're probably as far as away as you can possibly get
he thinks I only listen to the music I listen to in order "to be different". I shudder to think how he would react when faced with a proper muso.
He only listens to "Pc djs" and his whole music collection is downloaded off www.scotlands-best. Think really dodgy samples, terrible mixing cut and paste type stuff.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=PHHTsNFexTw
god i thought this thread would be better than it is
not at all
my sister always tells me i have shit music taste and vice versa
sister similar
used to go clubbing with her back in the early 90's, watched her eyes twinkle on her first E at a Primal Scream Screamadelica era gig, ran around blasted on snake bite to the Pixies at the local indie emporium, slumbered to Spacemen 3 and Loop. All the while our big bruv looked on bemused from the sidelines with a staple diet of blues and general rock with the occassional dip into my collection when it took his fancy. All now with families of our own. I still love music, sister needs to be reminded of the old days but keeps steady with the likes of Kylie and chart indie, brother likes his Dad-rock, Kasabian, Underworld and the weird fancies I send his way. Lovely little set up, gord bless 'em.
We vaguelly overlap in places
But my older sister has a fairly different taste in music to me. I still wouldn't call it 'mainstream' though - quite a lot of tuneful female singer-songwriter types, Regina Spektor, Laura Marling, Imogen Heap e.t.c. She does unfortunately love Stereophonics though. Which is a shame. And cheesy chart crap and musicals, but that's not her serious musical taste. Or at least I hope not.
Yes
he is a dude. He really really hated the Sunburned Hand gig though. Which was fair enough as they were quite quite awful that time.
Overlap a bit with one brother
with Franz Ferdinand, REM, Interpol but he sometimes strays into Jo-Whiley-indie too much (Reverend, Milburn, Chemical Bros). But fortunately no longer likes the Bloodhound gang. However he thought Neil Young was the 2nd worst person he had ever seen, when it was possibly my favourite.
Other brother likes Mika, Scissor Sisters and suchlike. Although he does get plus points for liking Franz Ferdinand. Thinks everything else I like is too pretentious.
nope, because I'm an only child.
I have lots of cousins though with varying tastes, from Bon Jovi and Robbie Williams to Satyricon and Darkthrone (Two different cousins, obv). My youngest cousin pretty much only listens to Epitaph bands and Biffy Clyro. Two of my cousins who I rarely see, but get on with best are in a noise band.
From time to time
my brother will borrow a few of my cd's.
But not really into the same stuff, he's a house music dj so...there you go.
im an only child and a bit sensitive about it if you dont mind
My brother is 17
and genuinely seems to be one of those people who 'like a bit of everything'. I am on his PC now and his Itunes is really mixed, Bat For Lashes, Britney Spears, Counting Crows, Daft Punk, Bowie, Eva Cassidy, Foals. He needs some musical discipline!
Also I changed the wallpaper to a Joy Division picture and he changed it back for a Wallace & gromit one. Were we not related we would not be friends.
its not that they have bad taste
my sisters only listen to about20 bands and don't seem to care about finding new music.
Hmm
Him: Trance music
Me: Belle & Sebastian
My brother thinks Kiss are the greatest band he has ever seen
I think The National are.
Remarkably he nearly always likes what I play for him 9though I never make it very extreme). As he usually listens to Guns n Roses I can't say I'm that taken with his.
We both like Weezer mind.
It helps...
... that my brother and I have some common ground in our musical tastes because we're in a band together.
He doesn't understand my obsession with post-rock though.
Can't say I blame him.
Me and my sister...
...are off to see Interpol tonight in Sheffield. We ve been to a few gigs together and are tastes are pretty similar as is our mutual love of Johnny Foreigner!
I spent
many years in bands with both my brothers, so fairly compatible.
Then they both moved to China and now rely on me to tell them what to listen to.
My sister
likes dance music, and recently asked me to make her a cd of songs with no guitars or males singing. I didn't know what to do.
having a brother 13 years older than me
meant i grew up listening to faith no more, mr bungle, smashing pumpkins and stufff. but my brother doesn't really get into music anymore. except he loves the mars volta (cos i told him about atd-i back in the day). he's always really encouraged me to listen to and make music.
my sister just like copies me basically but also listens to what she would normally be exposed to, so her music collection goes like: jack penate, bratmobile, dashboard confessional, the unicorns, the kooks, jeffrey lewis. it's pretty funny.
I listen to just about anything
My brother listens to just about nothing but film soundtracks. If I have any shoegazing on (a regular occurence) he will look at the stereo somewhat disdainfully and ask 'what druggy shit are you listening to this time?' Oh to be understood...
It's very good with my brother.
Though he likes a bit more 'out there' stuff than me sometimes. Share the love of many bands though, and often talk about music. We are also in the same band.
My sister likes Scouting for Girls. 'Nuff said.
Very similar
My oldest brother was the one who got me into indie/rock because we'd always listen to his music in the car journeys on holiday (at that age I preferred the BBC Children's Favourite mix tape). By the age of 11, I was a big fan of Take That, and Blur, Oasis, REM, The Bluetones, Pulp etc.
As the years have gone by, and the two of them have been wrapped up in their work more, I'm the one often making recommendations to them of things to listen to, and gigs to go to. It's quite nice now that we all live in London to go to gigs with them. I think our parents shaped our listening habits most.
he's only 13 so i let him off
but my brother likes Linkin Park. yet says everything i listen to is "just noise"?? i tried to get him to listen to No Age and his face was classic.
My sister bought 2 albums last year:
Mika and The Hoosiers. That sums it up I think.
Seemingly very compatible.
In the last couple of years I've realised that my brother likes a fair bit of the stuff I do, although he is far less into music than I am so I do recommend him a lot stuff. He is 3 years younger. He has a particular liking for instrumental post-rock. And Battles.
Case in point - last night we both went to see Gravetemple / Asva and earlier in the week Red Sparowes. He is really into 2 of those bands.
It was pleasing to realise we had similar tastes.
....
I never talk to my brothers and sister about music.
However I recently discovered that I can view my older brothers itunes music from my computer, and found that in amongst the all the expected DMX, 50cent and The Game and artists of their ilk, he has the entire Pink Floyd back catalogue and a considerable amount of Slipknot, Linkin Park and The Mars Volta. He also appears to enjoy Miles Davies.
All news to me. I don't really listen to any of these, but it made me smile a bit anyway.
My younger siblings are fond of the High School Musical Soundtrack and Leona Lewis. Really.
Your musical compatibility rating with Alex_C94 is: Medium
You share some artists in common, including DJ Shadow, Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, Daft Punk, and Boards of Canada
We don't often talk about music together.
I know she loves rap a lot - Public Enemy, NWA, Snoop (that I like) and, um, 50 Cent (that I don't like).
And last year, we went to see Justin Timberlake together and we went to a festival in Lisbon featuring Slayer, Metallica, Blood Brothers and Mastodon.
But yeah, other than that we don't really fuss about each others musical interests and talk about it.
i attribute most of my music taste
to my older brother's influence when i was younger - stuff like radiohead and b&s. he has a strange obsession with Steely Dan though. when he goes to ATP i get to tag along which is fun.
my little sister (17) has quite similar taste to me, we went to see radiohead last week. however she does have some failings e.g. Newton Faulkner.
a couple of days ago i showed her a flyer for a clubnight which had My Bloody Valentine as one of the bands listed. "why the hell are they on this list? they're shit!" she said. turned out she thought it was Bullet For My Valentine and had no idea who MBV are. oh dear
Me & my brother
Overlap a lot, and the more you go back in time the more we do. We both adore Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, some old soul stuff. He doesn't like Nick Cave as much as I do, but then I'm not sure anyone does. More recently there's been the Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, and I'm trying to get him into the National with some success.
He loves classical music more than I do, and I like quite a lot.
I feel a bit sad about this
When I was younger we talked about music all the time and shared loads of stuff. He got me into Sparklehorse, I got him into Mogwai - that sort of thing.
However it seems like since he's been living in Manchester and I've lived in Kent our tastes have diverged a lot. The last CD I made for him had a lot of Maston, Dillinger etc on it. He said he couldn't even listen to it.
Pussy.
The core bands are the same.
Mainly because she listens to my record collection. I like more music than her though, so there's some of my taste she won't like, i.e. I like a bit of noise and hardcore punk stuff, whereas she doesn't. But aside from that there's much common ground.
I mean, she's my top neighbour on last.fm, and last.fm NEVER LIES.
I used to think that my brother had alright taste
until he told me that he liked the new bloc party song.
other than that we're pretty similar, though i would pretentiously say that i have a less conservative, more diverse taste than him.
aww i love my brother.
My Sister is the Bomb!
She toured with the Dead Kennedys when she was in her early 20s (she's 45 now). Also U2 when they were playing clubs and apparently actually half-decent (don't ask me when that was, she gets embarrased about that now).
She saw the Birthday Party and the Smiths (admittedly she also saw The Exploited but don't hold that against her).
My sister got me into good music when I was 15 and played me the Buzzcocks' Ever Fallen in Love?. Changed me life, and then started getting into good ol' late 80s indie music and then dance/house.
We still go to the odd gig together!
i'd be lost without my sisters!
they're both 20+ years older than i am. when i was really young, they played lots of nirvana, red hot chili peppers, pearl jam, etc. for me. when i got into my angsty teen period, they got me into 80's indie like the smiths, echo & the bunnymen, the church, jesus & mary chain, etc. so really, i'm indebted to them for getting me into such great bands at an early age! :)
in fact, my sisters and i are taking my niece to her first rock show next month. :)
my sister is a complete and utter chav
she listens to awful funky house music, though when i went to my parents a few months ago i noticed an arctic monkeys cd on the floor amongst the house compilations so she's branched out a bit.
We don't talk much about music anymore but..
My brother has pretty good taste in music. He likes a lot of non-mainstream hip-hop and dance music, as well as dubsteb and a good mix of 'indie' bands such as Interpol, Architecture In Helsinki, and The National...however, being an englishman living in America, he does have a strange patriotic softspot for our 'lad' rock bands, such as Oasis and Kasabian...he doesnt seem to get my love for Pavement. However, the last time we spoke about music, he did reveal to me that he likes deerhoof. He's pretty cool really. My oldest brother likes coldplay and techno though...
i have
got my sister (who's 16) into quite a few good bands.
She has reasonable taste (and, in fairness, much more varied tastes than me - she listens to lots of classical, jazz and musicals too). We have musical conversations occasionally, especially about her beloved Belle & Sebastian.
i'm
quite close in age to my brother and we got into the same sort of stuff growing up, and still have similar tastes. also make music together. it was useful when we lived together - always had someone to go to gigs with.
my sister, not so much. thought she likes a few good things... suzanne vega, broken family band...
I had
no idea my sister had a taste in music until she told me she was coming to Reading this year. Although she says she's most looking forward to The Killers, so my
first thoughts were correct.
However, my dad's current favourites are QOTSA, Biffy, Oceansize, Guillemots and BSP, so i have way more in common wit him.
Things I share with my siblings
brother - dance, electronica, NMH (??)
sister 1 - Arcade Fire, MSP, BSP, St Etienne, Ride etc.
sister 2 - Sigur Ros, Shy Child, & loads of mainstream stuff
100%
me and the sister are great. I bought her a surprise early birthday present of malkmus tickets
Generally quite lucky with my siblings
My brother's only a year younger than me so we grew up discovering/liking the same kind of music at the same time. As time's gone by we've diverged a little (he's now obsessed with Thrice, who I really don't care for) but we've been to so many gigs together that I kind of miss him whenever he's not there.
My younger sister is also in my good books, given that she manages to combine her love for the pop tartlets of the day (as her status as high school queen would dictate) with a genuine passion for the good stuff that me and my brother have introduced her to, and the fact that we can all have family bonding sessions over Biffy Clyro and Regina Spektor makes me a very happy older brother indeed.
my brother is a semisuccessful house dj
i appreciate all the music he listens to. he dismisses everything i like as "depressing" or just "crap"
apart from the time i took him to see boredoms, which he liked for some reason
well
my brother listens to pretty much everything i tell him to listen to. it's pretty sweet
my youngest sister likes some good stuff in the dance spectrum
she's into some ace "electro" (her words) like Booka Shade and Tiga and Justice, and some okay stuff like Simian Mobile Disco. But i do get the impression that she only likes it because her friends do - about a year ago she listened to nothing but emo metal like Avenged Sevenfold, primarily because all her friends went to gigs. Nowadays all her friends go to warehouse parties
The middle sister though - jesus. R&B slow jamz and HARDCORE VOL4 MIXED BY HIXXY & ALEX K, but she isn't really too into music. It's just a minor distraction
We all love pop music together, but they hate my specific music and are quite vocal about it (particularly the middle one). "Weird" stuff apparently - uh huh. I think the other one might kind of grudgingly respect my tastes, but she'd never let me know because i'd just lord it over her. So not the perfect situation, but at least i don't have some n00b trying to talk to me about music all the time
