What is it that you like about the music you like?

Only because Don't Speak by No Doubt came on the radio just now and it immediately reminded me of school and carefree times.

And then I thought about the music I like and what it is that makes me enjoy listening to it and a multitude of reasons came up. For example, I initially started to like Kings of Leon because I used to be crazy about this boy and they were his favourite band. And I really like All I Need by Radiohead because it sounded so amazing at their Victoria Park gig. And so on.

So...is it the actual music you like, or the memories, or the surroundings in which you first experienced said music? Or a combination?

Which is....?

Too deep for you

to understand my son (yes_ is very deep and mysterious)

Not really.

I appreciate anything you'd imagine a troubled yet quixotic young man filled with latent genius and conflict to appreciate.

well...

It could be that it reminds you of a certain incident or time in your life - but how about music that conjures up an imaginary landscape in your brain?

A lot of music does that for me - and I prefer not to watch videos because they spoil it for me; I'm seeing the video maker's imaginary landscape rather than my own.

I have a problem with a lot of jazz music because it doesn't conjure anything up.

I like melodies.

Bass. Good vocals. Interesting lyrics. Loud electronic beeps. Long instrumentals. Harmonic vocals. Strings. Piano chords.

A combination of the two definatly

but I think I listen to more music that isn't connected to memories. So stuff that kind of takes you on a journey some how, I'm not sure how to explain it...

^spot on

some of my favorite records are unconnected to memories that remind me of my past, but can just get you dancing like a nut or completly messermise you, and i suppose you have memories of that which is why you want to listen to the song again....me talking gibberish

Also a combo

I like some music because it is good, but obviously with time come memories, so I also like some music as it transports me to a space or time.

I can't seperate certain albums from particualr people etc. Whether they're good or not is almost irrelevant because it conjours up the emotions anyway.

My favourite songs and albums

all soundtrack big moments in my life.

Though I don't know if thats because I love the song/album, listen to it loads, and stuff happens, or if it actually fits how I feel/who I'm with/what I'm doing.

the actual music, 99% of the time.

although i guess it's the lyrics in the songs that i like, so maybe that's what i relate to, so it's music = my experiences through the lyrics.

i do like some absolute shit because of certain friends though.

oh and i HATE certain bands because of certain people.

thats a good point

I love some absolute rubbish as it reminds me of peeps I was with at the time of hearing it and all that gubbins.

yep me too

some truly terrible songs....

Disney songs

remind me of an ex of mine and I even grew to enjoy some of them hehe

It's good.

or, i suppose,

i like it.

most of it is the energy it gives me

im listening to everything sucks by descendents are the moment and i feel the need to bounce of the walls everything time the next song kicks in. just makes me ridiculously happy

definitely strong melodies

you can really tell when someones actually sat down on a piano, found a nice sequence of chords, and really worked on a moving melody that conveys the emotion of the song. As opposed to some numb indie kid sitting on his bed with the $$$ in eyes as he spurtles a bunch of crap over his guitar.

Also ethereal music, stuff thats sonic and sweeping, but in a floaty soothing way with distant vocals added over it.

Memories can help but only if the song is half decent to begin with. Like 'the sweet escape' was pretty much on the radio constantly during my last proper relationship so now I forever associate that song with her.

This thread is starting

to worryingly sound like an episode of 'Changing Tracks.'

:D

because there's some hook in it

that I get immense pleasure out of listening to again and again.

I liked your post so much

I read it twice hehe

Ironically,

through repetition, your reply has become a hook in itself...
