Alternatively, you can just buy one of those multi-effects pedals like a Zoom one and it'll have a tuner built in.
They're not a long term or good live solution but when I was learning and playing at home my Zoom pedal was a much better piece of kit than a TurboRAT would have been.
I used to have to use a line6 spider in a practice room I used- it was pretty nasty. It couldn't handle any pedals running into it at all, just sounded mushy. Probably alright if you're 15 and in a nu metal band, but with a loud noisy band, the sound had no definition at all.
loads of people do on acoustics cos it makes the action nicer especially on cheaper guitars. kurt use to tune all his guitars half a tone flat so yeah if ur pitch reference come as ur are its tuned flat.
The idea that u dont need a tuner and its better to tune by ear is dumb cos it doesnt give u an accurate reference pitch.
I guess if ur jsut messing around its ok but if u ever do any recording guitarists that swear by that doin that annoy the crap out of me. Just like click track objectors.
or bassist with perfect pitch id be very impressed.
When recording the transparency of everything is so much clearer than live and if slightly out ur tuning with mess up the vocalist tuning too..resulting in poo just cos accuracy is not human and hence un indie cool.
considering how much it was. It's a BOSS tuner, but not a pedal one, it has an input and output for jacks, and a pretty decent mic for the acoustic, it can change it's frequency and various tuning settings, it cost about £12 (though this was 5 years ago... i got one as a present for someone 3 years ago though, and it wss £15 then I think).
decent balance of price verses quality? it's fine for me, don't think i could gig with it though.
There's decent or cheap.
Make your choice. If it'sthe former than a Boss tuner is a good choice. If it's the latter then the cheapest thing from Argos.
Please excuse my lazyness for not searching
But how much would a Boss one be?
About £50=£60 used.
I swear by mine.
I think behringer do a cheap clone of it though.
I don't like used Boss pedals.
The switch seems to be the first bit that gets 'dodgy'.
probably a stupid question
but a pedal one wouldn't work on a standard acoustic would it?
I'm not sure...
It'd need a built in microphone, and I'm not sure if the boss pedal has one, it'd need a source going into it.
that was my thinking
Nah, unless you put a Woody pickup in or it had a pickup built in
you couldn't use the Boss.
Even if you put a Woody in you'd need to have a guitar strung with electric guitar strings not bronze wound and obviously not spanish nylon strings.
You can get those funky ones that clip to the head of the guitar and work on the vibrations in the instrument. Pretty cool!
How much flexibility do you need?
(Will you be playing purely in standard tuning or any funny ones?)
Probably just standard
At the moment.
A cheapish one from Argos or somewhere
will probably do the trick then.
the one i got from argos
is well sucky.
use your ears and a record that you know is in a certain key
you'll get better at tuning very quickly and improve your ear while your at it.
listen to me
trust yourself not machines
Thats fair enough
but i really struggle to tune it by ear.
I fail i know.
It takes time to do it. Not something that I could leap in with personally.

I wouldn't like to rely on this
during the middle of a gig if a string snapped though.
korg make the best tuners
the boss pedals are crap yes...they are the ford focus of effects boss.
Ive had a korg dt3 for about 6 years now and its still going strong, built in mic and jack connections.
they do however do new models that are much much much better thou :) google
Boss tuner is ace
even if the other effects are a bit digitally.
i prefer to say
tone sucking vampire pedals from hell.... and dont get me started on line 6 ;P
we are auditioning guitarists right now and all of them are arriving with spiders! grrrrrrrr
Oh dear!
I used to have to use a line6 spider in a practice room I used- it was pretty nasty. It couldn't handle any pedals running into it at all, just sounded mushy. Probably alright if you're 15 and in a nu metal band, but with a loud noisy band, the sound had no definition at all.
i tune my guitar by playing come as you are
truth. cos i can get the low E and then do the rest. sorted. if i can do that then you can too, i am a retard at pitch.
soo u tune flat then?
like come as ur are is? or just roughly relative to whatever u pick as sounding kinda right on lowest string?
OH SHIT I TUNE FLAT???
i told you i was retarded at pitch.
Its not a big deal

why should it annoy you?
if somebody else has a good ear and knows a pitch when they hear it, what would be your problem with that?
if u could show me a guitarist
or bassist with perfect pitch id be very impressed.

ok
but please dont make assumptions of me
ok
but please dont encourage others to not atleast take a reference pitch cos its indie cool ;P
"indie cool"
you dont know me. and please calm down
im perfectly calm
:)
im sitting at work listening to JEW lol.
dont get so easily offended ;P
i really like mine

I ended up buying a korg
It works pretty well and is really simple to use.
Thanks for the advice.
