People that say "i like everything" but really mean the stuff in the charts

grrr!!

not so much a conversation starter more just something taht winds me up

  • Music just doesn't mean

    as much to them.

    • It may

You're just being a snobby tit. Just because people love something that's not considered "good" by you. I imagine music means a hell of a lot to teenage girls who are obsessed with the backstreet boys etc.

      • nope

if they don't specify what they like i doubt they care that much. if they sound really enthusiastic about what they like and it happens to be popular chart music, then fine.

      • ^hypocrite

  • I HATE PEOPLE

    LIKE THAT!!

It usually means there not into music whatsoever!

  • i hate this

makes me sound really indier than thou

but on myspace and facebook and stuff in the music section they put

"anything as long as it's good"

"all the usual stuff except metal"

    or even worse, just "rock"

    • truedat.

      the real question is..
if i asked You all what you like musically, how would you respond briefly..

      • haha, you mean like...

anything really, a bit of dance, rock, indie. so long as it's got a good beat i like it!

      • if people are bothered to ask

i normally just reply with a few bands i have seen live recently or name some bands that i am pretty obsessed with.

        • yeah good.

it's just i'm exactly the same; i hate that whole 'oh a bit of everything' thing but then when you think about it it's not all that easy to put across your music taste to a stranger who knows nothing of you. interessant.

  • 'The charts' are quite varied though.

They have Scooter and Iron Maiden in them sometimes.

Your dismissal of 'the stuff in the charts' is as bad, if not worse, than their reading of the musical landscape.

    • it's more the fact

that what they mean is 'urban' soul, sub par Ibiza dance, and kooks

maybe i'm a snobby prick that shouldn't worry about peoples tastes :-)

  • I LISTN 2 EVRYTHNG

LET ME HERE IT I LOVE

  • the first thing i saw when someone asks what music im into is usually

    Sonic Youth

one of my favourite bands, and they're huge, so even radio 1 loving idiots have at least heard of them.

    • i say Muse for the same reason

sometimes people don't even know who they are, then i may as well give up.

      • That's why it's a good idea...

        to like the Beatles.

  • If anyone answers to me with the 'I like everything'

I always ask what their favourite metal album is?

    "I don't like metal"
    "So not everything then?"
"Well no, but within reason, like stuff Radio 1 plays"
    "So chart music"
    "Yes"
    "Cunt"

    • i like this

      induction

    • I do

usually say this, but in my defense, when I tell ppl the bands I do like, they always respond with 'who are they?' So it just saves me the difficulty :/

    • i bet if

she was a pretty girl, you'd indulge her though

    • yes

that's usually the line of conversation, although i refrain from swearing because after all it is just a personal taste, i don't the ignorant i pity them (now i'm the ignorant cunt)

      • dislike the ignorant that should read

        :-(

    • STOP BENG A SNOB

      • p.s. i bet everyone thinks you are a great person

you come across as the cunt in that conversation really

    • LOL LEGERND

  • i say i like all kinds of music...

    thrash metal,
    speed metal,
    battle metal,
    black metal,
    death metal etc

  • I normally just say

    "most stuff with guitars in"

  • music as a conversation starter is a no go area really

except in 1/100th of cases probably.

  • what about going for..

    something like

"oh everything from *insert quirky indie band* to *insert underground rap/grime artist* and from *insert Norweigan hardcoreXband* to *insert classical composer*"

    too pretentious?

  • meh

i worry about more important things than how people define their music taste.

    • ^ i like this answer

      concur.

  • i often say 'i like a bit of everything'

when people ask me what music i'm 'into' because it's true, and i can't be arsed with listing a load of bands/artists and being met with a blank stare. it's boring. if i feel that i'm likely to like similar bands to someone else i'll go into more detail but otherwise i'd rather talk about something more interesting.

    • you never go into detail with me :(

what are you trying to say!

      • hahaha

we have an unspoken understanding of all things hardcore :D

        • of course :D

im writing down ideas for lyrics at the moment.

mainly consists of everything is shit, you are a horrible person. thats the main themes im experimenting with at the moment.

          • sounds good

we need something about hating the police as well. and maybe something about local norfolk 'issues'

            SPROWSTON'S ALRIGHT
            SPROWSTON'S ALRIGHT
SPROWSTON'S ALRIGHT IF YOU LIKE SAXOPHONES

  • I have a friend like that

listens exclusively to radio 1 and claims to like everything, but only owns about six CDs. Aargh.

  • When people ask me that I say:

"I like fucking music. You know, music to fuck to."

And then I put one hand on their shoulder and sing a really long single note, preferably mid-scale, all the while sustaining direct eye contact and not blinking.

More importantly why the fuck do you care what other people listen to. Just want to prove how fucking awesome you are tapping away on the internet thinking that nobody understands the quality of taste that you have and that no one has as great a taste as you and that you're alone in this world apart from the people you meet on internet forums who just totally get you man, you odious snobby cunt.

    Have a good weekend.

Oh by the way, I like everything.

    • ^

I like the cut of your jib

      • Its been a long day.

        But thanks!

    • 'odious snobby cunt'

      excellent work

    • you're like me but better

    • I will, if you don't mind,

be using this approach from now on. Give the man a biscuit.

  • Today at work...

someone asked me if I "liked the band Razorblade...or is it Laserlight ?"

    This is true.

    • Arguably,

      both are better band names.

    • Genius

Despite my earlier post, I couldn't really care what music people listen to, as long as it's not forced down my throat.

If they happen to have a good taste though, it's a bonus.

  • It doesn't bother me

If all they listen to is Radio 1 and don't know much music outside of that then perhaps they genuinely believe that they like everything and have a varied music taste.

    • dare I say it

but some people might just have more important things to ponder than their fantasy supergroup/favourite B side/top 5 bands they saw that were 7th on the bill in 1999. My nan would say she likes a "bit of everything" and she's a fucking legend and truly has eclectic taste, probably wider than any of us little runts and would happily jive along to Little Richard whilst making the Sunday dinner as nod at some Arcade Fire and appreciate the vocals more readily than most &also hum along to some throaway pop without worrying if it ticked the right kewl boxes.

  • One of my new housemates

    does this.

When questioned further he is known to say:

"well you know, proper music like blur and oasis, none of this Kaiser Cheifs rubbish."

So now you know, Oasis/Blur = sum of all music.

  • saying you like everything

is the same as saying you love nothing

    • I like to respond with

what kind of music do you hate then? I think when people say "I like a bit of everything" its because they don't really want to say the "wrong" thing and get condescending disapproval.

People don't mind telling you what music fucks them off and so you get a genuine answer and quite often get some common ground to start from.

      • unless they...

        hate your favourite band.

    • not really

      is it? Think about it.

  • Most People

are like that, although I've found they usually have at least one out of place band, for example this girl I overheard discuss her tastes and listed Oasis, The Kooks, Razorlight, all that stuff, paused and then said Aphex Twin.

  • OOOOOHH WOE IS ME!

IM JUST TOO INDIE FOR EVERYONE

  • NEWSFLASH

not everyone is a huge fan of music. far from being "massive", a band like, say, sigur ros are actually obscure. most people don't care about what Battles do next, or which member of Broken Social Scene will release the next solo project. and - bigger newsflash - this doesn't make them lesser people for it.

    • *DiS crumbles in shock*

      end of thread ;)

    • HEAR

      HEAR!

    • agreed...

and although I laughed at the guy at my work for getting Razorlight's name wrong, I then remembered he was doing medical research that may well one day save children's lives. And I mostly do boring office stuff.

  • most of the people throwing around accusations of snobbery

have done previous post sneering at Xfm or whatever

    • * posts arrrg

      • I thought that

was the type of music you were into - 'post-sneering'.

        • nah, I sometimes drop some of that stuff when I'm DJing

but at home I'm all about the nu-condescension shit coming out of Denmark

  • chart songs are usually much better than underground stuff

  • I hate being asked this question

It's damn near impossible to sum up years of music listening in a few sentences.
Saying you like "a variety of things" isn't very helpful and just listing a few bands either risks being met with a blank stare or them thinking "pretentious cock" with the miniscule chance of that person actually having similar tastes.
    Fuck it, it's only music.

    • ^ i agree

      i don't have boundaries man!
      I don't listen to nobody!

  • to be fair though

i was talking to a friend of a friend, who we went to mbv with and who was in a cool band, so i know he likes good stuff, asked me what i liked and i did a huge pause then said "everything" then another huge pause and said "yeah yeah yeahs" and added "wu tang clan". this is probably an unfair reflection, and i love music, so people who don't like it a lot will most likely say "everything" meaning "anything, i don't mind"

    • * the moral of this story is

they're not going to reel of an extensive answer consisting of bands and genres if they're not that bothered about music, cos i can't even do it when i love music a lot

      • it's like walking into a record shop

you can never remember what you wanted.

similarly I cant easily recall shitloads of music I like when asked.

Though I did have fun reeling off a few ATP bands when someone asked me who was playing there.

  • people who say this wind me up sooo much

everything does not mean you like pendulum arctic monkeys akon and leona lewis

    • i have leona lewis doing bleeding love acappella

      it's magic

      • music snobs

are good, we need some variety. I love when people ask me what music I like, I really, really love it. It is one of the few questions that is regularly asked for which you can give a different answer every time. Use your imagination and have a fun answer ready next time. Happiness.

        • but I have learnt

that just cos someone likes the same music as you doesn't suggest you can extend that to them being an ok person or that it tells you anything about what kind of person they may be by dint of liking music you rate. I digress but I am on strong medication at the moment. Eg at an Arcade Fire gig, I am making the assumption that if you are at a gig you like the band and you may extend that to "you like A, I like A, there may be similarities between us as suggested by our taste". Rubbish. That gig was full of cunts.

  • alot of people will try to convince you

that you're being a snob by saying this. but they're just hiding from themselves.
the truth is, for some people music is just a distraction or background noise or something to dance to. some people just listen to it.
and then some people treat it as something a whole lot more, most of the people here probably fall into the latter category. people who explore and genuinely LOVE music. it is the main part of their life.

the 'i like everything' brigade are just most people, from the former category.

does this make sense? it does to me.

    • yess

but it doesn't make them bad

just like if you said you don't support a football team to a football fan

      • i don't know what the fuck you're saying

it's not like that at all. it's actually like saying 'i like all music' when you totally don't. it's lying.
        your football example is rubbish.

  • i normally cut to the chase

and say 'i'm a total music snob and will probably just offend you'

the therapy was expensive but now i can admit it i can move on

  • when asked what music you like,

is there a way to answer without sounding like a cunt? if i answer truthfully then i sound like i'm just mentioning obscure bands to sound 'cool', otherwise I'll end up saying something like "i like INDIE".

    • it's better to sound lame

like if you go up to someone and say "I HAVE A HUGE COCK" they'll think you're a twat

      • nahhh man

        the laydeez go wild.

        • well..

if it ain't metal, it aint music to me.

        • are we all just a bunch of bell ends on this site?

When people ask me what kind of music - I generally say "I like a bit of everything" For me most people's eyes glaze over when you talk about specific genres such as "Detroit Post Rock neo Blue Grass/Skiffle Gabbaesque Electronica" and and if people want to know more I give them a couple of examples of fave albums. No one here can accuse me not knowing my music or being passionate about it. So i vehemently disagree with the general feeling of this thread its just for people who dont like music or like Top 40 Chart music.

  • As long as people don't Like Scooter or anything of that ilk

I congratulate them and their music taste with a hearty hi-five.

Not too fond of R'n'B though, but I can see why others might like it.

    • and as for my usual response to what music I like:

      "Screamo. Or some acoustic shit."

    • my 6 yr old nephew

loves pap pop and he's great.
