Glasvegas

What's people general view on them?

I think they could be great, but may end up just sounding like U2 :/

  • i quite like the guy's voice

    it is whiney.

  • they can barely play

which is endearing. nothing original though. i think its one of those things where if you see them live and you're in a good mood, they could blow you away.

  • i like them, i'm not sure

for how long though. They seem like a band that people will tire of quickly.

  • Really like them

Floooooers an' Fitba taps is especially good.

  • I don't like the guy's voice

    It is whiney.

  • The 'Daddy's Gone'/'Flowers & Football Tops' single is spectacular.

Their last couple of singles have been alright. Don't think they're quite prepared to release an album just yet, though. But that's the way the industry works now, unfortunately.

  • I really like

that new single, Geraldine, I think I'll probably hate it by the end of the summer though.

    • Awesome band

Getting a rough ride from the "indier than thou" fraternity for changing their sound and other such so-called crimes. Funny thing is, these are the same people who'll then criticise the likes of Oasis and U2 for not changing theirs! Doh...

  • all songs sound the same

i really like them though but i think i prefer there older under produced demos rather than the new versions of old songs

  • They sound great live

until you realise all their songs sound the same. I enjoyed them but wouldn't rush out to buy a record.

  • A bit of a one trick pony

but when that trick's sounding like the Mary Chain fronted by Roy Orbison, I'm not complaining. Go Square Go was ace at Glastonbury.

  • Liked Daddy's Gone

Then got bored of it. Then hated everying else they've put their name to. Shame.

    • Fantstic band

Was a little worried because of the hype but they really are very good

  • I've said this before and I'll say it again

They were by far and away the worst thing on Jools Holland last series. My God. I don't know what song they played but after hearing it I never want to hear another song by them ever again.

Shit band name + irritating voice + no discernable identity or presence = arrrrgghhhhhh!

    • but maybe

you were in a bad mood?

      you never know.

      • I think their fantastic

and I can't wait for their album, anyone know when it's due. Seem to think it was winter 08?

        • Well

I know they've just finished recording it, so should be later on in the year or at the start of next year, so yeah.

All seems slightly rushed for a bands debut, but I guess thats the nature of the industry :/

          • I swear

they've been around for years, no?
I definitely have some demos from at least a couple of years ago so surely not that rushed?

      • I agree

their Jools Holland appearence was lackluster to say the least. But in terms of songwriting I think they are pretty special. I love nearly every song I've heard by them.

  • daddy's gone is very good

the sound is good, but all the songs are the same. but they're ok

    • Q stage

Not sure about Glasvegas, really. Lots of other fairly decent bands on the Q stage at Glasto. Team Waterpolo, another NME-hyped band, played on it. Bit more jovial than Glasvegas, and the name is a bit better (!) Some guy wearing a name badge (official? - yeah right!) gave me a free CD with them on it. CatCutter Records, www.catcutter.co.uk. I think it's free on downloads as well.

  • They're a bit meh.

    Very indifferent to them.

I'm not very found of his Glasgow accent, it's a bit shit.

Daddy's gone has some pretty terrible lyrics as well.

    5.5/10.

Also@ Glasvegas is a terrible name for a band. Only silly freshers new to the city call it that. Everyone else knows better.

  • I heard Daddys Gone

    it made me lol

    • Great band

Give them time. You'll love them! Honest...

      • Perhaps

but I have to agree with the comment about Jools performance above. It was about the most wet, anemic thing I have ever seen/heard.

  • Think

they're fantastic. Saw them live at The Roundhouse, brilliant show. Great, shimmering sound, lovely songs. And the guitarist could have any of you.

    • thats why when i form

my own band i'm gonna have big daddy as the bassist

      • He

plays guitar though; it's Giant Haystacks who plays bass.

    • And the guitarist could have any of you.

So could the drummer by the looks of her!

  • Scottish Lift to Experience anyone?

    No?
    Just me?
    ????????????????????????????????

    • just you.

    • nah

      nuffink like! LTE were great.

    • come on

i really like Glasvegas, but thats fucking heresy.

    • I don't think i've conveyed my point particularly well here.

To start.... i fucking love LTE as much as the next man. Texas/Jerusalem is one of my all time top albums. It still gives me the shivers whenever i listen to it.

First time i heard Glasvegas, i thought:

"hmmmmmm.... echoey guitars, wailing vocals, 'heartwrenching' melodies', general EPICness = watered down, safe version of LTE with a scots guy singing."

Can you at least see where i coming from there?
      No?

Shit, it IS just me then.

      :(

  • That Geraldine song is...

awful. The riff is boring and repeats itself throughout the entire song. Plus, it contains the line "My name is Geraldine, I'm your social worker." Urgh.

    • This year's

'Don't you know you've got your Daddy's eyes, Daddy was an alcoholic'?

  • Like nails downthe blackboard of my soul

I absolutely can't stand them. He can't sing, they never used to sound liek that, delay is not a substitute for a tune, the use the word 'shodder' in almsot every song, they make me ashamed of being Scottish.

  • I think they're crap!

I always want to like Glasgow bands for obvious reasons but I find them really dull.
Their sound is boring and offers nothing new, his voice grates and I think the band are just ok players.
For me they seem to be an emperors new clothes kind of a band.
    Next!

  • i like

the 60's influenced design of their singles and sleeves, that's about it.

  • boring band

    boring music.

that single Geraldine does my head in. it's bland beyond belief.

  • i like them

if only for the fact they have a song about saltcoats, a fact I've still not quite got over..

  • i like them

    their newer songs especially

    • I like

Like all the 6 or so songs ive heard so far and thought they were brilliant live. Seeing them again in Brighton tonight.

Ok so they're very JAMC.....but i love JAMC!

  • Best band around since the 90s...

I just missed out on the 90s and hated pretty much everything this decade. It's great to finally stand in front of a band at a small venue and be completely blown away. I'm seeing them tonight. Long live Glasvegas!

  • Anyone can shove some cheese and bread on a plate

But a decent and creative chef will make a shit hot cheese on toast out of it, with perhaps 3 types of cheese, some lea and perrins - fuck it, maybe a cheeky bit of marmite underneath and some cherry tomatoes to garnish!

Ie, there's a reason everyone says they're a mix of JAMC and The Ronettes. It's coz there ain't a lot else going on.

  • Torn...

I could be nice and say they have some decent hooks and a differnet sound to a lot of the stuff that comes up on the radio...Or...If you really want an honest opinion:

When I listen to them I hear little more than repackaged 50's doo-wop songs drowned in delay and reverb so you cannot notice how comparatively poor they are at playing their instruments. Overly self-aware references to various hallmarks of supposed gritty Scottish-ness sung in such a ludicrously dense and over-accentuated way as to verge on parody, which seem to be mistaken by most of the tastemakers as a shortcut to authenticity. Some of the lyrics are so clunky they hurt and the fact they are representing Scottish music means that tonnes of great bands from up here (who don't sound so immediately Scottish but are probably miles better) will be passed over in favour of more column inches going to these guys flying the flag like an NME-friendly Proclaimers.

Don't hear enough variety in their songs or live set to think they could make their much overused sound spin out in length to an interesting album, let alone two. Another case in point in the perils of "NEWNEWNEW!" hype and style over substance.

    Sorry.

    (braces self for immediate comment-hate).
