Legal Drinking Age.

I read somewhere that the law is a-changing and soon only over twenty-ones will be able to buy alcohol in supermarkets and whatnot. Does anyone know when this change is likely to happen?

And obviously the next step is rising the age limit in bars and clubs. Which is pretty ridiculous. If this happens before I turn twenty-one, I will be devasted. Truelly.

Thoughts and opinions?

if this happens

im leaving the country.

LOL

This has already happened

in my town.
Although the big Tesco on the outskirts is exempt...

Why?

because i don't drink much

and drunk people are lame

Even if you don't drink,

not being allowed into pubs and clubs (including some gigs) for another three years is a horific thought.

not for me

i've never had problem with gigs since i was about 14
and i can leave the pubs and clubs

also, everyone's misery will sustain me

Typical government

completely missing the point and the real issues behind "problem" drinking.

Having said that, I'm 27 so couldn't really give a fuck.

Exactly.

Kids as young as thirteen are drinking in the streets anyway. It won't stop this. It also won't stop the twenty-something binge drinkers. It actually makes me angry thinking about it.

Surely the government knows it won't solve a thing, they just want to make it appear as if they're doing something about it. Urgh.

...

i was under thirteen and drinking in the streets , it had no negative effects on me.

lolscotlandlol

?

it's 18 in wales

lollandudno

OH I GET IT

funny.

mmm

i m 22 so doesnt affect me, and they also cancelled my uni fees saving me £2800 which if they hadnt i would have be quite literally dead so i still give SNP my vote.

there nationalist....

so likely to make drinking laws more stringent if anything.

It is likely to

happen soon for shops, but not in pubs etc. (Scotland Only).

I think that's only happening

in scotland,so,tough luck if you live there!
It won't happen(Please god no)
If it does, the police don't have the resources to enforce it anymore than they do now,so how many under age drinkers do you know who've been caught by the police?'Cos I'm fairly certain no ones every been done for this!

i thought

it was just various schemes devised by some of the supermarkets to show they were being tough on underage drinking.

didn't morrisons say they'd challenge to 25, so tescos went one better and said they'd challenge to 30 year olds(!)

anyway, it's not going to be law, and even if it was you can just go to the local offie who'll sell to anyone.

so basically

the drinking age would be the same as my country. bummer. wouldn't really change things. you'd still have underage drinking anyway. hell, the whole idea of a drinking age seems pretty idiotic to me.

My fortythree year olf aunt was ID'd at her local newsagent.

She actually looks old for her age as well.

oh god

its our age group who are losing out.

first they gave us fags for a year...then denied us, making us wait another year to buy 'legally'

it would be a better idea to give harsher punishemnts for being 'disorderly'

but i must admit, half the fun of drinking is knowing the activity is illicit.

:\

I would feel sorry fo the young uns

but I'm 25 so it wouldnt effect me much hehe

i'm so glad i'm 21, that's for sure.

i can imagine if i was 18 i'd be absolutely livid, being allowed to drink and them having it taken away from you.

;-(

it's better for you this way. also drinking will be cool for longer, it's was more fun when you wern't supposed to do it..

Everyone I knew drank from about fourteen onwards,

it ceased being shocking or cool way back then.

Even before then,

I never saw it as 'cool'. My dad always drank with me from quite a young age (not enough to get me drunk, but little tumblers of beer or some wine here and there).

They should ID everyone

regardless of age, that would save them putting the age up.

do both

bahhh humbug

I think it's a sensible idea, but...

i think 18-21 year olds are wrongly being castigated for a more broad problem. People causing problems through drinking aren't exclusively that age, they're just as likely to be 25, or 50, but yeah, i think it should be 21, maybe even 25, the fewer people we can have drinking the better, for various reasons. I also think smoking should be 21, if not completely illegal, but that's not going to happen. We grow up too quick, everything's too rushed. I didn't have a clue what i wanted to do when i left school, or college, or wherever, i still don't. I think college or sixth form should be compulsory, as should a year of work placement. It's probably see the economy fall flat on its arse but it might help lessen lots of other problems.

Universities

would be redundant. I mean no one actually goes for the qualifications right?

I will be 21 the year I finish uni.

There's no way I'm going through the rest of my education sober.

If the law passes, I'll have to find more interesting intoxicants.
