Its a shit rip http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=154870652
but it sounds promising from what I can hear, very dreamy... I want this EP to come out sharpish... the can't be much more mastering to do on it and this sounds promising (though its a shit recording) but this and 'king rat' point to a very promesing prospect.

That is terrible quality
but as you said it sounds promising. I love King Rat too. Is there any news on it? They keep adding new dates so I'm guessing this will keep pushing back the release...
I'm pretty sure it's soon
They have announced track listings and added King Rat to the setlist full time, as appears might be the case with the 'Whale Song' which will mean 2 songs on the set list will be on the EP full time which indicates soon.
They literally just have to master it last thing I heard + their writing the new album already, so it wouldn't suprise me if it comes out October/November
Fingers crossed
i would
really really love modest mouse to do something amazing again.
The last 2 albums are good fun
but compare then to the long lasting indie classic trio which is 'Lonesome Crowded West' 'Moon & Antarctica' and 'Building Nothing Out Of Something' it just spoils it.
What spoils what?
What you on about?!
All their albums are great (apart the phone stuff on SSS) and anyone who criticises the last two albums deserve a kicking.
I'm not criticising them
I just mean I enjoy the last 2 albums for very different reassons to the first 4. I'm far more emotionally attached to their earlier work and whilst I like the new material I feel a little alienated by it and songs such as we've got everything are just really weak.
I'll be honest
The last two were very patchy. Live they were a bore for me and alot of other people. They need to strip it back again, Brock needs to find that anger that drove the earlier material.
^^^^^
AGREEEEEED i miss angry brock.
But Modest Mouse albums are always patchy.
They're always like 70 minutes long with 45 songs. I can never listen to one all the way through. And I figured that with so many different songs, everyone's always going to love some, and be not so bothered about others. That's the appeal of Modest Mouse albums, too - it's like a little treasure chest that you ruffle through, uncovering good stuff here and there. And as one thing becomes a bit boring, there's always something else that grows on you.
This is my Modest Mouse theory. And for me, the latest albums have included just as many good 'uns as always, if not more.
Ooooo I like the when one song gets dull another grows on you
this is very much the case with the band, I could never pin poin that before but you nailed it on the head!
i agree they are good
i think for me, the newer albums have this big brash sound, which works. theyre good albums, but i miss the intimacy which is everywhere al over the older stuff. i think little motel is a great song though.
'Little Motel' 'People And Places'
'Spitting Venom' 'Dashboard' 'Parting Of The Sensory' are all really good songs
oooh
parting of the sensory. yes <3
i really disagree actually
I don't think they've EVER recorded a completely consistent album, but I think We Were Dead is just about as strong as anything they've done. Sure it's not as angry but in terms of sheer pop hooks and well-constructed songs it's excellent, and in Spitting Venom they finally wrote a song to live up to Trailer Trash and Cowboy Dan.
The closest to consistency they got was Moon & Antarctica
But the main flaw with that album is the length and the fact that none of their best songs are on it... cept maybe 3rd planet, different city and tiny cities made of ashes
But if you immerse yourself into that album
its a masterpiece
find it hard to listen to it all the way through though
actually, The Stars Are Projectors is the only boring song, but it's just that the whole thing's too long and doesn't have enough variety to justify that length. I think.
I really like Stars Are Projectors
the length is justified if you immerce yourself in the album, given the right time and mood it's a clear classic but otherwise its a choure. I listend to it 3 weeks ago at night whilst writing down some notes and it reminded me why I loved it so much in the first place and it justfied its 9.8 rating on Pitchfork for the first time in a looong time.
The Stars Are Projectors
Is fucking amazing, yet probably needs a bit of time to get into.
I like
We've got everything
My issue is that it seems as though they're reigning themselves in of late
especially the last 2 albums. They're good albums, don't get me wrong, it's just they don't touch M&A, TiaLD, LCW etc
New much better recording
http://youtube.com/watch?v=7CjfLKprSeI
:D sounds pretty fucking ace, especially the outro
i think
it sounds great
The first recording got my hopes up
the one I heard today pretty much confirmed that this may be one of their best songs for a loooong time. So far out of the tracks I have heard
King Rat (Studio) 9/10
Whale Song (Live) 10/10
I've Got It All (Most) (Studio) 7/10
Satelitte Skin (Live) 7/10
It's looking quite the prospect & looks to be quite consistent. Though I have a lot of faith in Satelitte Skin sounding MUCH better recorded.
where can
I find a studio recording of King Rat? And wasn't I've Got It All (Most) a rather mediocre Good News outtake?
Whale Song sounds GOOD.
The album is all outtakes
King Rat studio was a B-Side to Dashboard but the are CD quality versions floating around at the moment.
U got msn? PM me ur IM and i will send it
In my Honest opinion
The last two albums are great and got me into Modest mouse. But I have come to love lonesome crowded west far more than the rest of their output.
I guess in general the new stuff lacks what made people like the old stuff.
Which doesn't stop the new albums being excellent themselves.
They still write killer songs
and know their way round a hook, I still REALLY enjoy the new Modest Mouse, We Were Dead still gets a lot of plays from me (including now) and has some BRILLIANT songs on it but the are sometimes where i'm frustrated that the anger seems to be gone.
Don't get me wrong I love all their albums, I don't dislike any of them and I know them all off by heart. They do good summer pop tunes & I don't really dislike any of their music except for We'Ve Got Everything which is messey and Missed The Boat which... whilst still has some merit to it... is just too safe.
And I LOVE Dashboard
thats one of the best indie disco songs I have heard in ages
also
there are almost no modest mouse songs I don't enjoy.
